The article also mentions “other Christian churches” – seems to me China would be eliminating a good percentage of the potential competitors.

There is an underground Roman Catholic Church in China which is said to have alliances to Rome. This is the church they are talking about. Sometimes you see Cardinals being proclaimed by the Pope and he doesn’t say who they are or where they are, often they are in China.
No but the article would seem to suggest that you or I (who don’t attend the underground Church in China), if we were Olympic talent, would be PREVENTED from attending just because we are Roman Catholics.

I was too young to remember the politics of when America didn’t go to Moscow for the 1980 Olympics but this is something altogether worse.

I think it would be an idea for all Christians and others interested in Human Rights to boycott the 2008 Olympics altogether. I am going to try and get my husband (sports addict) to not watch them.

I would have to agree. Sounds like China may be setting up to attempt to do what Hitler tried to do at the Berlin games. Claim racial superiority.

I think it may be time to do a preventative strike. Does anyone know who will be broadcasting the Olympics or have a list of sponsors for the broadcast?

The banned groups will include members of religious groups not sanctioned by the state, including the underground Catholic and other Christian churches; “key individuals in ideological fields,” “counter-revolutionary” figures, the Dalai Lama and all affiliates, “individuals who instigate discontentment toward the Chinese Communist Party through the Internet,” and certain types of “handicapped” persons.
Members of the indigenous religious group Falun Gong would be barred, as would “family members of deceased persons” killed in “riots” – a euphemism for events such as the Tiananmen Massacre – and Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province, which the regime brands “national separatists.”
Foreign athletes, members of the media, Olympic staff members, referees, sponsors, dignitaries, and the International Olympic Committee itself, will all be investigated, to determine whether they fall into any of the 43 categories
. (emphasis added )

This sounds really bad. Can they do this? Certainly such restrictions would bar most athletes from the games, wouldn’t they? This is crazy.

China wants to be accepted as a respectable member of the family of nations, but this type of thing shows their true colors.

ban Catholics from games…gee what a compliment…a regime that was placed into power by Truman and Marshall has murdered some 64 million of its own people and we see a post like this! The Cardinal Kung Foundation reports on horrible happenings over their to our brothers and sisters in Christ so whats new?The Corporations that own and operate these firms in that sad land are the ones behind the hateful Vinci Code and aclu etc etc…why in just a few years outward displays of Christianity …crosses, Madonnas, etc will be banned as 'hate’crimes in America…unless of course we get more Warriors to leave their couchs and neutralizing organizations…ie Kof C etc and wield the sword of St,MIke…all the best…lets tip toe thru the tulips once again]

🤷 I am not surprised by this. China has never been kind to Christians, especially Catholics.

This is an excellent reminder to pray for our Chinese Catholic brothers and sisters. It is also an excellent reminder not to take the freedom to practice our faith for granted.

Sincerely,

Maria1212

China, as a state, historically has simply never been kind, period.

Its best was an impersonal civil service bureaucracy with a kind of ruthless efficiency.

Its worst was a clod and murderous regime determined to eradicate all things religious or arising from free thought.

Sounds like time for the IOC to pull the plug… not that that’s going to happen.

I won’t watch it.

I wonder if China disclosed this to the IOC at the time they petitioned to have the games brought there. I bet not…otherwise the IOC would possibly have made a different choice.

Mixing sports and faiths is ludicrous. I wonder if they will start checking the religions of the tourists who come to see the games as well and turn them away too?? Bizarre! More reasons to pray.

You might want to read up on your history. Roosevelt and Truman fought AGAINST Mao Zedong and the Communist rebels by providing the Nationalists with weapons and money. Hardly putting them in power in my opionion.

Definitely not. The games are about a year away not. Too late to change venues. All they can do is cancel them.

The IOC has also blackmailed countries after the Moscow boycott. If you boycott games, you will be barred from future competitions.

I think it may be time to disband the Olympics permanently

I just sent a letter to six senators (Brownback, Kennedy, Kerry, Cornyn, Hutchison, and McCain) asking them to investigate and condemn these actions. I have little faith in the political process, but it makes me feel like I’ve done something practical.

Good for you

They are banning “religious groups not sanctioned by the state”.

Tell me again why any country voted to allow the olympics to be held under the jurisdiction of such an oppressive regime?

Can you tell me where you found this? My husband is a rabid Olympic fan, and he pointed out that not only do we, who boycotted in '80 (as did China), still participate, but all the Communist countries (except Romania) did in '84. In fact, check out this map of countries who’ve boycotted, and when:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Olympic_boycotts_1976_1980_1984.PNG

If the IOC bars countries who boycott, how have we been going since '80? And the better question, how did China get it for '08?

Thanks!
Cari

The operative word is AFTER. The rule/threat was made to avoid what happened in Moscow and the subsequent retaliation by the USSR who boycotted the 84 Olympics. I remember it clearly on the news.
