I have been on another thread and the discussion there has veered towards the subject of ‘miracles of the Creator’ which is somewhat unrelated to the topic of that particular thread.
Anyhow, there is a miracle concerning Jesus (pbuh) which Christians believe Jesus did but Muslims do not accept to be true… and there is also a miracle that Muslims believe Jesus did but Christians do not.
First, let us examine the miracle that Christians believe Jesus did but Muslims do not i.e. the one whereby Jesus supposedly turned water into wine.
In the Bible, we see that Jesus consecrated himself to God and therefore abstained from alcoholic drinks according to the instructions recorded in Numbers 6:1-4:
“And the Lord said to Moses,
‘Say to the people of Israel, When either a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of the Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord,
he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink, and shall not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried.
All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, not even the seeds or the skins.”
And so, how then does it make sense that Jesus should perform this “miracle” of turning water into wine when he himself religiously abstained from drinking alcohol?
Now, let us turn to the miracle that Muslims believe Jesus (pbuh) did and in fact, it was the very first miracle among the various that he performed throughout his life.
Al-Qur’an, Chapter 19 (Maryam), Verses 16 - 34
Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East.
She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent her our angel, and he appeared before her as a man in all respects.
She said: “I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah.”
He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son.
She said: “How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?”
He said: “So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, ‘that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us’:It is a matter (so) decreed.”
So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a remote place.
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): “Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!”
But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;
"And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.
“So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk with any human being’”
At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought!
“O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!”
But she pointed to the babe. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?”
He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet;
"And He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
"(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
“So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)”!
Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute.
And so, we see that the very first miracle that Jesus (pbuh) did was to talk while still a baby in the cradle and defend the honour of his mother in the face of accusations of being unchaste by members of her community.
There is no mention and really there is no room for Joseph the carpenter in the Qur’an and the truth of the matter is that he is not needed at all as a husband in order to preserve Mary’s position of reverence because her baby son Jesus (peace be upon them both) was the one who protected her honour while still in his cradle.
Now then folks, we need to choose our miracles here.
Why do Christians choose not to believe this lovely miracle of Jesus talking as a baby in his cradle and thereby protecting the honour of his mother… but instead they choose to believe that he turned water into wine which, as has been shown above, directly contradicts the instructions in the Bible not to consume alcohol?
