I believe Jesus Christ is everything for the Christian. All of the unsearchable riches are found in Christ. All of the promises are yes in Christ. I am confused why the Catholic Church is so important to Catholics when Christ is everything to the Christian. Do you want to help me understand why the Catholic Church is so important to Catholics when our life is hidden in Christ?
It’d take quite a long time to read through 39 pages of posts, so someone has probably already said this…but the Catholic Church is so important for similar reasons that the Bible is important. It is through the Church that we learn about Christ, that we come to Christ, that we discern His will, and meet Him in an even deeper way in the Sacraments. In the same way that both Catholics and Protestants know and love Christ by keeping in touch with and obeying the Scriptures, Catholics know and love Christ by keeping in touch with and obeying the Church. If you believed Christ set up Sacraments, as Catholics do, would you not take part in them as a part of living a life in Christ? If you believed the Church was just as surely a fountain of truth about Christ and His teachings as the Bible, wouldn’t the Church be important by definition in your journey to become close to Christ?

Basically, our answer to that question is similar (though maybe not identical) to the answer a Protestant might give if someone asked “Why is the Bible so important if Jesus is supposed to be everything?” Without first being brought to Christ, one can’t accept that He is everything. Just as Protestants believe Christ uses the Scriptures and preachers to bring people to Him, Catholics believe He uses not only those things but the entire Catholic Faith, complete with all the sacraments, disciplines, and obedience.

If this has already been said, I apologize for being redundant.

Blessings in Christ,

“I believe Jesus Christ is everything for the Christian. All of the unsearchable riches are found in Christ.”

**Agreed; but, how did you learn about Christ? **

“All of the promises are yes in Christ.”

Agreed; but how did you learn about those ‘promises’?

“I am confused why the Catholic Church is so important to Catholics when Christ is everything to the Christian.”

Because it’s through the Church that Catholics learn about Christ and His ‘promises’, among other things.

“Do you want to help me understand why the Catholic Church is so important to Catholics when our life is hidden in Christ?”

**Yes, I do. The truth is you’re confusing Christ with the Bible. The Bible is the only means by which you know anything about Jesus, yet you overlook that fact in promoting Jesus. Are you promoting Jesus, or the Bible? Do you consider them one-in-same? If so, you’re not worshipping Jesus alone, but also the Bible. I’m sure you actually believe the Bible is the literal word of God, and that you’ve never bothered to study the history of the Bible, much less the history of Christianity.

Just as you’ve learned everything about Christ through the Bible, we Catholics have learned everything about Him through the Church, and part of Church tradition is the Bible, which the Catholic Church gave the world. **

I believe Jesus Christ is everything?
If you really believed that, you would be in communion with The Church that Jesus Christ Founded. He founded His Church for those who would be most united with Him.

It’s amazing Catholics continue to proclaim the Roman Catholic Church instead of the person of Jesus Chist. The Bible is God-breathed and is not a book created by the Roman Catholic Church. The Bible is divine revelation, do you understand the difference.

Why do you separate Christ from His Church…the body of Christ?
We know the Bible is true because it was given to us through His Church. There is no getting around the simple fact that Christ works through fallible men for His infallible purposes.

I refer you to my previous post, and other posts here with a similar message. Please don’t ignore them.

Just as you say about the Bible, Catholics believe the Catholic Faith and all that comes with believing it (including but not limited to the Bible) is God Breathed. Catholicism is Divine Revelation. There is no difference between the nature of your claims for the Bible and the nature of our claims for the Catholic Faith. To keep insisting that there is, is to deliberately ignore what we’re saying, presumably because it just isn’t convenient to the point you might hope to make against us. Therefore, the point of my previous post, particularly of the last major paragraph, still stands.

Don’t you think you have a circular arguement? If the Bible is a Roman Catholic book, then the Roman Catholic Church can only tell you what the Catholic book means. Let’s get beyond this superfical position, especially in regards to the CC about salvation apart from faith in Christ for Muslims, Jews, and other religions that deny that Jesus is the Christ, and deny that Jesus was crucified, died and buried, raised from the dead and ascended to the right hand of God. These seem to be central issues in regards to the universal Christian Faith. IMO - 21st Century Roman Catholic theology is drifting farther and farther away from Christ and Him crucified on behalf of sinners Don’t these issues mean anything to you as a Catholic who loves God in Christ?

I find no problem with this statement. Authority to interpret the Bible lies with the Magisterium, authority inherited from the Apostles and protected by Apostolic Tradition and the Holy Spirit. Yes it is a Catholic book, and yes only the Magisterium can say definitively what it really means and how it applies to us–hence, a unified and universal faith (aka “catholic”), with only one cook in the kitchen: Christ.

Don’t you think you have a circular arguement?
No, considering I did nothing whatsoever but compare our faith in Catholicism to your faith in the Bible…unless you are saying your own faith in the Bible is based on a circular argument, of course. Only then would that assertion make any sense. It’d be untrue, but it would make sense then.
If the Bible is a Roman Catholic book, then the Roman Catholic Church can only tell you what the Catholic book means.
Unless one believes that the Catholic Church is guided by God. How, and this is what you fail to answer, is that any different from believing the Biblical writers were inspired by God? How is that anymore circular than your own position?

This has nothing to do with whether or not Catholics believe Christ is everything. In fact, the Church consistently teaches that even if unbelievers go to Heaven, it is somehow only through Christ. My own theory is that perhaps He will give them a death bed vision (or even a “death-instant” vision, since His actions are not limited by the rules of time) if they were truly blind. Didn’t Jesus Himself say to the Pharisees, “If you were blind, you would have no sin,” implying that a true blindness to the Truth is something that might cause God to take mercy?

Even then, the Church still teaches that everyone should embrace the Truth right now…She does not teach it doesn’t matter what a person believes, but just that God may have some method of mercy to those who are “truly blind” if in fact such people exist…and since the Church teaches that even these must be saved through Christ, however that may happen, your point that somehow this means we don’t think Christ is everything is null and void.

You cannot separate Jesus from His Church. Do you think Jesus founded The Church for no reason? He founded His Church and will guide and protect it until the end of of time when He returns in Glory.

Actually, the Holy Scripture of the New and everlasting Covenant was declared inerrant by and as a result of the Decree of Pope St. Damasus 1 at the Council of Rome in 382 A.D.

The Decree of Pope St. Damasus I, Council of Rome. 382 A.D…

ST. DAMASUS 1, POPE, THE DECREE OF DAMASUS:

***It is likewise decreed: Now, indeed, we must treat of the divine Scriptures: what the universal Catholic Church accepts and what she must shun. ***

***The list of the Scriptures of the New and Eternal Testament, which the holy and Catholic Church receives: of the Gospels, one book according to Matthew, one book according to Mark, one book according to Luke, one book according to John. The Epistles of the Apostle Paul, fourteen in number: one to the Romans, two to the Corinthians, one to the Ephesians, two to the Thessalonians, one to the Galatians, one to the Philippians, one to the Colossians, two to Timothy, one to Titus one to Philemon, one to the Hebrews. Likewise, one book of the Apocalypse of John. And the Acts of the Apostles, one book. Likewise, the canonical Epistles, seven in number: of the Apostle Peter, two Epistles; of the Apostle James, one Epistle; of the Apostle John, one Epistle; of the other John, a Presbyter, two Epistles; of the Apostle Jude the Zealot, one Epistle. Thus concludes the canon of the New Testament. ***
Likewise it is decreed: After the announcement of all of these prophetic and evangelic or as well as apostolic writings which we have listed above as Scriptures, on which, by the grace of God, the Catholic Church is founded, we have considered that it ought to be announced that although all the Catholic Churches spread abroad through the world comprise but one bridal chamber of Christ, nevertheless, the holy Roman Church has been placed at the forefront not by the conciliar decisions of other Churches, but has received the primacy by the evangelic voice of our Lord and Savior, who says: "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it; and I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you shall have bound on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you shall have loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Council of Hippo in 393 reaffirmed the canon put forth by Pope Damasus I…

AD 393:
Council of Hippo. "It has been decided that besides the canonical Scriptures nothing be read in church under the name of divine Scripture.
***" ***
(canon 36 A.D. 393).

The Third Council of Carthage reaffirmed anew, the Canon put forth by Pope Damasus I…

***AD 397: ***
***Council of Carthage III. “It has been decided that nothing except the canonical Scriptures should be read in the Church under the name of the divine Scriptures. ******” ***
(canon 47 A.D. 397).

May the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ descend upon you and remain with you forever.

Your servant in Christ.

Don’t you think you have a circular arguement? If the Bible is a Roman Catholic book, then the Roman Catholic Church can only tell you what the Catholic book means.
Well, you’ve outsmarted yourself. If this is true, then you’ve denied the canon. If it is circular reasoning to rely on the Church to interpret Scripture, then it is circular reasoning to accept the Church’s establishment of the canon. Unless you suppose that Giddeon Bibles grow in cucumber patches.

You better be careful. You might end up like Bart Ehrman. His total inability to accept and understand the true meaning of oral tradition and apostolistic authority led him to fanatically worship the Bible. When he discovered the errors in that type of thinking he lost all faith and became a raving atheist. His more sensible Episcopalian or Catholic (I can’t remember which) wife is still a faithful Christian.

Why do you keep repeating these ignorant lies after you have been told time and time again that your understanding is wrong? I think you need to spend some time figuring out why you can’t engage in any kind of meaningful exchange with anyone on the core theological issues you are (unfairly and ineptly) attempting to address.

The depth of anti-Catholic sentiment is so profound in some people and communities that whatever the facts might be, they will be ignored, fought, or dismissed because NOTHING that comes from the Catholic Church can be anything but evil. (Read my signature.)

I have seen people go into great uproar over the simple historic fact of the ratification of the canon. “GOD wrote the Bible! Not the Church! God wrote the Bible! They weren’t Catholic!” As I said. Mustn’t let the facts get in the way.

Angles Aware, IMO… you are a very mean and angry Roman Catholic… much much more than most on this site. Just re-read your postings. All I have tried to do is point everyone to Christ, and to the sufficiency of Jesus Christ, and to challenge everyone with the Scriptures, and emphaize the need for faith in Christ as compared to being fine with God apart from faith in Christ. Things are not true simply because you say that they are true, or the Roman Catholic Church tells you that something is true. We alll agree that the Bible is God-breathed and consists of the Word of God. But you have yet to respond to Scriptures that I have posted.

Underdog, you have a serious problem. You believe that you can read people’s minds, and you project your assumptions onto other people. That is a psychological problem that you have.

I am not “an angry Roman Catholic”. How ridiculous. You do not know me, and you could not possibly have read every post of mine to come to that conclusion. However, if you persist in personally attacking me I will have no choice but to report you to the moderators.

I will tell you, though, you are frustrating to me, and the reason why is because this is so clearly over your head. I have responded thoroughly to Scripture, your response has been to ignore the substative arguments (as others have also pointed out). It’s like you just don’t get it.

Just above here, you talk about how you’re “just pointing out the sufficiency of faith” and that is not even the topic of discussion! You are claiming that you’ve pointed out things that are not even under discussion. You are way off the railroad tracks. You are losing all of your debates because you can’t stay on point.

You are the one who has not responded to the substative theological arguments here, and instead of actually doing it, you personally attack me. I will not tolerate that, I’m sorry.

All I have tried to do is point everyone to Christ,
A noble goal indeed…but we are already in Christ. I myself am puzzled when Protestants of any stripe think Catholics are not already Christian…even when I was Protestant (with solid religious education and much knowledge of the Scriptures) I could see that Catholics are Christian. That’s why I myself must admit I too sometimes get frustrated (though right now I’m quite mellow 🙂 ) when Protestants fail to realize that faithful Catholics have no need of being pointed to Christ…they are already there.
and to the sufficiency of Jesus Christ,
Catholics believe in the sufficiency of Jesus Christ. We just think there’s a lot more to Him than most Protestants. Protestants (well, the ones who bother to read the book of James) know as well as Catholics that part of being in Christ involves how you live your life; Catholics happen to believe that there’s more to the way Christ told us to live than Protestants do.

The situation is very similar to if you, a Protestant, had an encounter with someone who only believed in the 4 Gospels, and challenged anything (say, that Paul wrote) that wasn’t found explicitly in black and white in the 4 Gospels, saying you should let “Christ be enough” and saying that, by holding to the rest of the New Testament, you were “adding to Christ.” You both believe Christ is sufficient, you in particular just believe you have the fuller picture of what it means to be “in Christ.” The way we Catholics feel and think when Protestants start saying (directly or indirectly) we’re “complicating things” or “adding to Christ” is very similar to what you would feel and think in that hypothetical situation.
and to challenge everyone with the Scriptures, and emphaize the need for faith in Christ as compared to being fine with God apart from faith in Christ.
We do believe in the need for faith in Christ…as far as the points you’ve brought up about it being possible that a lifelong unbeliever might be saved, I’ve addressed that, as others have as well.

As far as challenging everyone with the Scriptures, people appear to have offered answers to your challenges. I haven’t read every single page, but I will say there are always answers to such challenges, whether people have given them or not…those answers may not be in line with your interpretation of Scripture, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t in line with Scripture itself. Truth never contradicts Truth. Scripture is true, and so are the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church.
Things are not true simply because you say that they are true, or the Roman Catholic Church tells you that something is true.
Are things true simply because the Bible tells you something is true? Is it okay to believe such things on faith? If the answer is “Yes,” then what makes it different that we believe in the Teachings of the Catholic Church as God-Given? I’m not saying we have no rational basis for having our Faith…we have plenty of them…but quite aside from that, even if a particular Catholic believed strictly on faith in the Church’s teachings as being from Christ, why is that less acceptable than a Protestant believing in the Bible strictly on faith?
We alll agree that the Bible is God-breathed and consists of the Word of God.
Please do not forget that just because we all (conservative Protestants and faithful Catholics) agree that the Bible is Divinely Inspired doesn’t mean that that’s the only deposit of faith. Some “Christians” only believe certain passages of the Bible are true. Should we, then, abandon the rest of the Bible and only hold as authoritative the parts that “we all agree” on?

Again, I’m not being bitter (I’m in a pleasant mood right now). I’m genuinely trying to get you to see the error in your thoughts against Catholicism. What you see as flaws, and your reasons for seeing them as flaws, are simply not accurate.

Blessings in Christ,
KindredSoul

Hi Church Militant,

Please help me understand your screen name. Do you think a better name for Church Militant would be Christ Militant?
No.
Who is the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ or His Church?
Christ, but he established His one church, and your doctrines are not in line with what His church has taught for 2,000 years.
Do you point people to Jesus Christ or to the Roman Catholic Church as their only hope in this sin cursed world?
The Roman Catholic Church preaches Christ and Him crucified.
** Who REALLY Preaches “A Different Gospel”?**

It is my own opinion that the majority of non-Catholic salvation messages actually present a different and deficient gospel than that of the New Testament, the early church and the Catholic Church for the last 2,000 years.

I believe that the essential “way of salvation” verses that are used in a great many non-Catholic evangelistic messages been have ripped from the pages of the Word of God and bandied about in the last 500 years to further a different and oversimplified deficient Gospel that anyone who sits down and reads the New Testament for themselves without some non-Catholic preacher breathing down their neck every Sunday and Wednesday will soon discover is not the same Gospel of salvation.

I have read the Word of God many times and that is why I am a Catholic. The salvation message of the Catholic Church is in line with the teachings of the New Testament, and I believe that the salvation message of the majority of non-Catholics is some different gospel, condemned by St. Paul and leads to something that I have dubbed “Christianity Lite”.

This is the result of much internet discussion with a variety of non-Catholics which spawned the following post here on Apocalypsis. How Is A Catholic Saved?

Read your New Testament from cover to cover and see what the teachings are concerning salvation and then compare the various non-Catholic “ways” and “plans” of salvation with what you have read and see if the Holy Spirit does not show you the deficiencies and differences between the two.

They stop far short of what the New Testament Gospel is while the teachings of the Catholic Church are in fact right in line with it.

I would suggest that the context of the New Testament does not teach the Reformed doctrine and that (as I have stated before) theirs is a different and deficient gospel.

If no works are involved in our salvation, then how do you explain the Gospel message preached on the day of Pentecost (under the influence of the fullness of the Holy Spirit no less!) in Acts 2:37-38.
[37] Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”
[38] And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

How do you explain the message delivered to St. Paul himself (especially since you assert that it is his teachings that convince you of the reformed position) in Acts 22:16
[16] And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’

Obviously, from the message there, baptism is key to salvation and does indeed wash away and forgive sins. The reformed teachings contradict this in spite of the plain sense of the scriptures.

If our works have no merit with regard to our salvation, why then does Our Lord plainly tell us that we will be judged and either welcomed into the Kingdom of God or cast into hell based upon them in Matthew 25: 31-46
[31] “When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
[32] Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
[33] and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
[34] Then the King will say to those at his right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; [35] for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, [36] I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' [37] Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?
[38] And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
[39] And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’
[40] And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' [41] Then he will say to those at his left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
[42] for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
[43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
[44] Then they also will answer, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' [45] Then he will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’
[46] And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

(Cont’d)

The Gospel today is (and should be!) the same as that preached by the apostles in the New Testament. (See Acts 2:37-38 and 22:16 as well as John 3:5) If what is preached is not the same then that (IMO) would qualify as “a different gospel”.

I, like many many Catholics, have heard and seen allegations that ours is a different gospel, but having read the Word of God carefully and prayerfully many times over many years, and comparing the messages of those who make those allegations to the salvation message of the Catholic Church alongside the New Testament, I have found that just the opposite is true.

If, as I suspect, you have read the New Testament all the way through, (more than likely many times over) you can understand what I mean when I say that the Gospel of salvation is actually the topic throughout and I submit that it is the Gospel that is preached by the Catholic Church that accurately aligns with that and not the one of the reformers or their modern step children.

Galatians 1:[8] But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed.
[9] As we have said before, so now I say again, If any one is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.
Your friend,
I’m sorry, but you are not my friend. You are an anti-Catholic attempting to mislead Catholics away from the one true Christian faith. I don’t have any anti-Catholic “friends” because friendship requires trust and I cannot truest an anti-Catholic
I believe the answer is found here:
You believe a lot of things. Most are like this one. Pulled all out of the context of the New Testament, and given a twisted interpretation like this one. An interpretation that springs errant new winds of doctrines of men and does not agree with the rest of the Word of God, nor with the 2,000 years of authentic and verifiable Christian teaching.

You don’t even know where my username comes from.
(I thought this guy told us he used to be Catholic?):hmmm:

I’ll post the definition AGAIN.
church militant
–noun Theology.

those Christians on earth who are engaged in a continuous war against evil and the enemies of Christ.

Compare church triumphant.

Good post, Church Militant! 👍

I don’t see why Protestants have to turn everything into a false either/or dichotomy, when there really is no need to do that.

I’ve grown so much closer to Christ since I’ve become Catholic and left the divided world of Protestantism behind, especially since division and schism are condemned in the Bible-- I could never go back to being a Protestant.

All I have tried to do is point everyone to Christ, .
On the contrary, you cannot separate Christ from His Church and you cannot point people to Christ while attempting to separate them from His Church; in doing so, you are actually attempting to drag people from Christ. This is a grave evil which I pray that you will repent of and be forgiven for.

If you would like to learn more about the teachings of Jesus Christ, please contact the folks at chnetwork.org/. I promise, if you unite yourself to Jesus Christ through His Church, you will experience the great gift the He has promised to those who follow Him. As Jesus said, “He who eats My body and drinks My blood lives in Me and I in him and I will raise him up on the last day.” And He is faithful and sure to keep His promises. Repent, turn to the Gospel and be saved and you will have everlasting life.

Grace and peace be with you.

Your servant in Christ.

Are you saying non-Catholic Christians do not know God through Christ? So, you do believe the body of Christ consists of only Roman Catholics… and maybe some Muslims, Mormons, and unbelieving Jews too.
