I went to a well-known chain “Christian Book Store” where I live today, and was I in for a shock. I could not find the “Liturgy of the Hours”, and it wasn’t even in their computer!

So, for grins, I looked for a Douay-Rheims Bible, or even a St. Joseph’s Edition…NONE…I didn’t even ask them to look in their computer for these, and I left.

“Christian” bookstore? More like “Protestant/Non-Denominational” bookstore.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

Not exactly.

I have only gone in to “Christian” Book Stores to get things that I knew they would carry. I remember specifically looking for a Strong’s Concordance, an NASB bible, and an English/Greek Interlinear New Testament.

I always look around while I’m there. But, I never expect to see anything specifically Catholic.

Oh of course! I have found I can only go into a Catholic bookstore to find anything I need.

My DRE told me a story of a time she went into a Christian bookstore she had shopped in several times before and asked for a Catholic Bible because she saw none on the shelf. The store owner looked at her in disgust and said something to the effect that they didn’t carry such a thing and would not in the future. So when she left, she stopped at the entrance, took off her shoes, slammed them together directed at him, put them back on and walked away! Matthew 10:14!

Try to find a Catholic bookstore, a support the work they do!

Oh, I know I can go to the ETWN and other on line sites, but on a lark, I stopped to see if they had the LOTH, since it looked like a pretty big store.

Silly Me

By the same token, the Catholic bookstores I frequent do not include the King James Version of the Bible, books by evangelical preachers, or crosses without the body of Christ.

All about market share, folks! 😉

Try Barnes and Noble a friend told me that they have catholic literature. I order on line and through amazon check first to see if a used one is available .
I have been looking for a saints book still, and I saw one at Waldens books and was surprised, and it is still there so when i get the money I will buy it.

Ah, but I would EXPECT that in a CATHOLIC bookstore. This was a CHRISTIAN bookstore. Are Catholics not Christians?

Reminds me of my youth, when a friend asked me what religion I was. I told him “I’m a Catholic”, to which he retorted, “Well, I’M a Christian”…uh, say what?

Sorry, I don’t buy it. Many of our (Catholic) book stores have names like “Wheaton Religious Goods.” Aren’t Protestants “religious”? I think you knew who the market was for that establishment when you walked in and were just stirring the pot a bit. That’s okay, too, but no need to play dumb about it.

If I’m wrong, I truly apologize. I suppose it is also possible for some Size 2 women to accidently walk into Lane Bryant and discover they aren’t going to find their size there . . .

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A local Christian bookstore is actually owned by a Catholic woman who “branched out” to increase business. Smart marketing. They tend to have a LOT of Catholic literature and statues, etc.

Others are run by dyed in the wool protestants and will have little to nothing. Shop around.

I guess I don’t understand. I could understand walking into a Catholic bookstore and not finding a KJV.

What I don’t understand is walking into a “Christian” bookstore (Catholics being the original Christians, and all), and not finding the LOTH, or a Douay-Rheims Bible, or even a St. Jospehs.

I wouldn’t get in my truck and drive out to the Towne Center to go to the LifeWay Christian Bookstore, just to stir the pot. I was looking on line, and on eBay, and it occured to me that the store might at least have the condensed version, as opposed to the 4 volume set.

As a sidebar, you referred to “Wheaton”…as in Wheaton, IL? Home of Wheaton College? I used to go to VBS at “College Church” back in the 60’s. Dad used to fuss at my Mom for letting us go to VBS with the “Bible Thumpers”…

Back when I lived in the area and raised my girls there, it was just “Wheaton Religious;” now it is “Wheaton Religious and Church Supply.” Still right by the railroad tracks off Main Street in Wheaton, IL, in a new building.

Where you at St. Michael’s? 🙂 I was SS Peter & Paul in Naperville.

My parents were married at St. Michaels in 1958. I grew up at St. John the Baptist in Winfield.

Believe it or not, our Religious Goods store, owned by Catholics, does have a limited stock of Protestant bibles. But, the “Christian” bookstores don’t have any thing remotely Catholic.

I am a little curious, though, how the Orthodox handle this. Are there religious goods stores that cater to this particular market? Just curious.

Incidentally, the OP may want to try Amazon.com. I have had much good luck in finding rare Ratzinger books that will not break an arm and a leg. Plus, I can also buy my Bare Escentuals and place them in the same cart as Spirit of the Liturgy. 😃

I bought a crucifix and a rosary and a crucifix necklace at our christian bookstore the Lighthouse, but there was not much of a selection. We need a catholic bookstore and we used to have one out of one of the parishes ran it out of one of the closed convents , but no more. Walmart sells some catholic items so check out that.

I once went to a large Christian bookstore to look for some vacation reading. The Catholic section had a few token classics but mostly included anti-catholic material. When the clerk who was helping me look for a book realized that I must be Catholic she became visibly frosty. The experience was very unpleasant. I must also mention that I went to another (and smaller) Christian store and found it to be reasonably well-stocked with Catholic materials and a supportive staff. I purchased a new Catholic bible which they had in stock and become quite friendly with the non-Catholic owner. In fact, I arranged for a display of his Catholic material at my Church after Mass. I don’t know what to make of these two experiences except to say that glib generalizations are always suspect.

I believe our local Catholic bookstores carry Protestant bibles as well. And they would most likely order them if they are not in stock.

We have several good Catholic stores in the area. One of them is across the street from the Cathedral - at one time it was in the Cathedral undercroft. They have ordered books for me before without much hassle.

My favorite Catholic store will gladly order any book they don’t have on hand. It is odd. This store has a better selection of Catholic apologetics books. But they also seem to have more Protestant customers.

There is an Orthodox bookstore inside the Greek Orthodox Cathedral downtown. It has been awhile since I have been there but I believe they exclusively stock Eastern Christian items (books, icons, etc.). No Protestant books or bibles here.

The one I’ve been too had a NAB but nothing else. It did have a little corner where they had first communion things and a few rosaries…which I was surprised at. I have been in a few of them just to check them out; they are mostly for protestants.

I am in the south and Catholic gift shops are hard to find. We have one very small one for a rather large area.

And our little shop doesn’t carry the DR or the LOTH or even the St Joseph either. But you can order them. They just aren’t big enough to keep too much in stock.

I can often find “Christian” stuff at the Catholic bookstore, but I almost never find Catholic stuff at the “Christian” bookstore.

For what it’s worth…a search of the LifeWay site shows only one listing of any kind under keywords “Liturgy of the Hours”, where Books a Million lists a page full.

Off to the Towne Center again 👍

Go online to amazon, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Also the clerks at Borders can order any book in print and have it delivered to the store within days.

Not every store will carry everything you might want to buy, and apparently this store doesnt have a call for the title you requested.
