Christian Book Stores

Another thing you have to keep in mind, is that so much of what the protestant book store is selling is really “pop psychology” marketed to a Christian audience.

If you were to take any of those books, thin out the funny stories and psychology, you would have very little left over to actually call Christian. Really, think about it. The major TBN type televangelists are no different than Tony Robbins, John Gray, Steven Covey, Harville Hendrix, or James Redfield.

And they make millions selling books in protestant book stores.
We noticed this, too. The most vivid example of which, as far as I’m concerned, is Joel Osteen. An in-law gave me one of his “bestsellers” three years ago for Christmas, and I nearly threw up in my eggnog. There was a smorgasbord of self-help, and just a smidgen of Christianity.

The B&N here has about 20% of the Christian section is Catholic material. Also Borders has a good mixture of Catholic material in their Christian section.
I have noticed this about the big-box stores, although one must always be careful, because in the “Catholic” section you are likely to come across one or two books about why Catholics are going to hell. :crying:

I found “The Divine Hours” by Phyllis Tickle at Hastings.

For use as the LOTH, is this Good, not Good, close enough?

Your thoughts?

Cause they are mass organized. Occasionally, you will get an employee who catologues correctly, but most of the time, they just pull it out of the box and stick it on the shelf the company assigns to work to.

The LOTH is an official publication of the Catholic Church, it has no author.

okee dokee…that’s what I needed to know…thanks!

$18.95 saved for a better use.

👍
Might want to spend it on something by Rev. Hans Urs Von Balthasaar or Pope Benedict XVI. I am going to re-read Death on a Friday Afternoon by Fr. Richard John Neuhaus. You can find it on Amazon.com.

Does that mean that the only Catholic bookstore in your area is the one at the Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan? It’s been quite a while since I’ve driven down there. I doubt, though, that the store would carry anything Protestant, not that I would expect it to do so.

The San Juan bookstore is nice and large. I was able to find a lot of neat things there.

I do feel bad for your in-laws. You are right about the struggle for an independent religious goods business. One very promising religious store (Catholic) bit the dust after almost two years. 😦
the SJB bookstore is the best in town, there is one in Brownsville, one in Harlingen, and some parishes have small stores, but mostly gifts, not books. the Benedictine Monastery also has a small but good line of devotional books.

my in-laws were in business in the Cleveland area.

I went to a well-known chain “Christian Book Store” where I live today, and was I in for a shock. I could not find the “Liturgy of the Hours”, and it wasn’t even in their computer! So, for grins, I looked for a Douay-Rheims Bible, or even a St. Joseph’s Edition…NONE…I didn’t even ask them to look in their computer for these, and I left. “Christian” bookstore? More like “Protestant/Non-Denominational” bookstore. Have any of you had similar experiences?
Unfortunately, the generic stores (they have to appease thousands of denominations) are kind of like the 7-Elevens of faith. A little bit of a lot of things. Frankly, some view Catholics with suspicion, for the usual reasons. Glad you tested them, though.

Christ’s peace

Strangely enough, I went into our local Christian bookshop some time ago, they had a special offer, offering three books for £10, browsing around, I found the complete 3 volume set of LOH which I duly purchased for £10.

Some years previously I had gone into the same store and found a very a “Anti-Catholic” leaflets, which I complained about. They took them off the shelf straight away, and I have never seen anything like that in there again.

When I started RCIA this past fall, I was alerted to the fact that the Christian Bookstores in town will not have a wide selection of Books and Bibles for Catholics. Happily, there is a wonderful Catholic Bookstore downtown, and they have a 2nd store south of town. We were also given a list of links to sites online where we can buy things. I have used a couple different sites and was very pleased. My most positive experience was being about to go to the Catholic bookstore in town. It’s so much nice to be able to look at what you’re buying. 😉

I learned this, up close and personal today. Not finding Catholic books in a Christian book store was one thing. Discovering a veritable plethora of Catholic books a block away in a “general” book store made the Christian book store look rather silly, but that’s just my opinion. 😉
The old prejudices just won’t fade away. Recently, I have begun to fear that it will take the Hand of God to bring Christians back into solidarity with one another. That is frightening, to say the least. It conjures up images of trials and tribulations.

With my daughter attending a Catholic high school 20+ miles away, I have a choice of two very good Catholic bookstores. Bit of a drive, but if we’re going there anyway…

Christ’s peace.

Even more funny…my wife told me last night, that she went to that same Christian bookstore, to get me something for Valentines’ Day…she asked where the Catholic books were, and they looked at her like she was nuts…so I told her MY story, and we both had a good laugh.

It depends. not all christian bookstore are catholics, so you need to make sure the bookstore is catholic.

catholic and protestans unequal yoke.

If the name is something like “Christian Bookstore”, I assume it is Protestant (and maybe even somewhat anti-Catholic). I’d shop at one if I was looking for something like, say, a ‘bible quote of the day diary/dayplanner’, coffee mugs, non-Mary/saints art, etc.

God bless you for the courage to stand up!

I’m not sure this is an “unequally yoked” issue. If one buys a Catholic book at a Protestant bookstore, how does this “yoke” him to Protestants?

In the absence of a good Catholic bookstore (which we have in Houston, praise God), I would happily support a Protestant bookstore that carried good Catholic material. Not only should they be commended for their openness to the Faith, but they might well lead other Protestants to the Faith as well, in coming across Catholic books.

You know now that I think of this it’s an interesting thread. I recently picked up a copy of Rediscovering Catholicim at a Borders. All the Christian Book Stores around me don’t really carry Catholic stuff.

I swear (figuratively :-)) that when I was checking out the cashier looked at the title, snickered and kinda gave me and my daughter an attitude…🤷

Praise God! Someone to pray for!
