Christian Book Stores

I stopped into the “Christian Book” Store named “Christ Centered Books and Music” here in Fort Myers last week and asked if they had the “The Splendor of Truth” Encyclical by Pope John Paul II. I was told no but she had a list of Catholic Churches in the area. It appears that “Christ Centered” means ABC “anything but Catholic”. Had they had an intent of servicing the Catholic Community she would have offered to order it for me.

Unfortunately do not believe there is not but one Catholic Book store in all of the Diocese of Venice. Several Parishes have very, very small gift shops that are open before and after Sunday Masses.

I have only been to two different non Catholic Christian book stores in California and one did have some Catholic items, not allott but they did have some things. Now I live here in Arizona and I happened to run into a non-Catholic Christian book store while in search of a rosary. I couldn’t find a rosary so I asked the lady who was working if they had any rosary’s. She first gave me a funny look then said “No, we dont carry any”, I asked if they carried any items that would pertain to the Catholic Church. She said “no”. I said "But this is a Christian store right?. She said “yes”. I said “that’s funny this is a Christian store and yet there is nothing in regards to Catholicism”. She didnt respond but did give me directions to a Catholic store. There is another non-Catholic bookstore close to home and they do have Catholic items. Now what I need to mention is that it is a very small section and in a somewhat secluded area. I wonder if there are any other non-Catholic bookstores that do this? Now I just stick to Catholic Christian bookstores, just thought I would share my experience.

“Always preach the Gospel, and if necessary use words”. <><
God Bless You All!

We are blessed in this area to have a lot of religious goods stores, and most of them are Catholic.

However, a couple years back up by Naperville-Aurora, the girls and I came across a Cokesbury, the Methodist publishing house and store. My dealings with the Methodists have been limited to my eldest’s ex and ex-in-laws (not good!), and when I worked for GBOPHB (also not good at all). I was pleasantly surprised to find saint medals!!

Have you been to the Love Store in Kankakee? 👍

I learned this, up close and personal today. Not finding Catholic books in a Christian book store was one thing. Discovering a veritable plethora of Catholic books a block away in a “general” book store made the Christian book store look rather silly, but that’s just my opinion. 😉
I think what you have to come to terms with is the fact that Protestant/Evangelical/Fundamentalists don’t consider Catholics Christians - at all - so they wouldn’t even think of having Catholic resources in their “Christian” stores.

Since I have become Catholic I am finding it amazing that most Catholics are completely unaware of this fact. I am no longer considered a Christian by my family since becoming Catholic. 🤷 It’s why Catholics are targeted and in startling numbers lured away from the Church. Ignorance is not bliss - on either side. 😦

So, when you get that “frosty” vibe, it’s because you are considered not much better to them than a Satan worshipper - just take a look at Chick garbage portraying itself as truth in literature and you will be awakened in no time to what is going through their minds when you come into their stores. You are obviously there to bring some kind of evil spirit upon them. You were probably being rebuked under their breath.

Forgive me if I sound like I am overgeneralizing, but having come from there, I know how far and wide this attitude prevails. It’s very sad. 😦

you are right. catholics are so innocent. they have no idea. i did not know myself. until i begin reading it. one time i was in this church and the preacher begin mocking the catholic church and 'members telling me that catholic were not saved. that was it for me. but overall they are the ones to be ignorant.

Yes, of course, I live in the south. They are called “Christian book stores” not “Catholic book stores” Remember for many Protestants and non-Denominationalists Catholics are not Christians. I will now and them drop in some of the local ones here and ask for their Catholic section. Just for fun. I can sometimes enter into a discussion of the Catholic v/s Christian issue.
It amazes me how many people who call themselves ‘Christian’ don’t even know the very definition of the word… the need to invest in a dictionary 🙂

As a sidebar, you referred to “Wheaton”…as in Wheaton, IL? Home of Wheaton College? I used to go to VBS at “College Church” back in the 60’s. Dad used to fuss at my Mom for letting us go to VBS with the “Bible Thumpers”…
So did I

I grew up in that Church

During what time period? You do mean “College Church”, right?
Yes, College Church, at the corner of Washington and College Avenue, two blocks north of the railroad tracks.

I started attending College Church in 1965 and was there until I joined the Marines in 1977. What years were you in VBS?

A couple of weeks ago I was looking for something by Scott Hahn. I headed over to Santa Clara University (I think it’s a Jesuit University, know it’s Catholic). This bookstore had nothing by Scott Hahn, and seemed to have more stuff written by Evangelicals than Catholics.

69-72 Also did some Awana (I think that’s what it was) at CC, and VBS at Wheaton Academy/Christian HS, all run by the same group. I distinctly remember a “Mrs Guild” who had a patch over one eye. A wonderful lady. Also, a neighbor, Joyce Peterson was extremely active, actually the one who always invited us. And another neighbor Frank Fernandes was one that sticks out as well.

I helped Joyce Peterson teach VBS one summer. Dwight Peterson was a friend of my father’s. Frank Fernandez ran Christian Service Brigade (our version of AWANA) and my father helped out with that. I was in Christian Service Brigade back then as well.

My sister bought a house out in Prince Crossing a few years ago.

Small world.

That was it…we called it “Boys Brigade”. Do you remember sitting on the gym floor singing “One Dark Night” (Chicago fire song/Ms.O’Leary’s cow) in “rounds” ?

Dwight Peterson was a pilot as I recall. First they lived behind us, then they moved sort of across from us behind Indian Knoll school. I lived right across from Indian Knoll school.

Small world indeed.

What I remember from boys Brigade were the cakes that Mrs. Fernandes made every week. That and breaking my front tooth on that gym floor. Did you go to school with Lucy Fernandes?

Yes he was a pilot. I’m still mad at my dad. Dwight also was a CFI, he taught people to fly (when he wasn’t flying for United). He offered to take me flying but my dad told him I wasn’t interested. Flying is my passion. Dwight passed away a couple years ago.

I remember them having a huge yard (and a barn) on Geneva Avenue I believe.

Geneva Road was the second house I referred to. Also had a really cool automobile seat/dash/steering wheel thing in the basement. Dwight always had a thing for Renaults.

I did go to school with Lucy. Brothers Danny and Franky, sister MaryLou.
