LOL…Plus you can keep reproducing with more chicks in your franchise, owning your own planet in a new solar system, living the life of an astro-pimp with huge afterlife dividends!
It’s the businessman’s religion par excellence. If you’re a really good Mormon, you can be promoted and become God on another world; sort of like getting your own franchise!

Glenn Beck is a self-proclaimed entertainer; he says what he says to make money. That’s the American way.

He’s fun to watch. Entertaining. But I would put no more stock in what he says than I would any other enterprising, talking-head personality out there, regardless of stripe or leaning. He’s an ENTERTAINER, not an expert. Certainly not a prophet.

Why should Christians boycott Beck? He’s a Mormon - he certainly has no standing where Christian doctrine or mission is concerned.

Personally, I believe all Catholics should be offended by Glenn Beck’s remarks and should boycott his show. He’s an anti-Christ and a false prophet misleading many good people into thinking that they should live in fear. Fear of what? Fear that President Obama is planning a secret Communist world order…fear of everything that has to do with our government helping people with unemployment benefits or health care or social programs. I think his words are very offensive to those of us who believe that Jesus would want us to give to the poor and needy…and to believe in social justice…which is very much the central theme in the Bible…over 2000 verses are given to promote justice…and central to the teachings of the Catholic church.
Glenn Beck is all about greed and fear. This is a big deal…when our religion is insulted. It’s time to boycott his show and stand up for our faith. Who will you serve? Our Lord or someone who tells you that giving to the vulnerable and poor will lead to Communism and Natzism? As for me and my family…we will serve the Lord and speak out against Beck at every chance.
It would be a lot easier to believe in the Americans who push “social justice” in church circles if they weren’t so uniformly left-wing politically. Maybe those are, indeed, the same things.

Personally, I don’t think the left cares a thing about the truly needy. It’s fixing to cut Medicare benefits and has not even said anything to improve the lot of those on SSI, let alone done anything about it. All of this “care for the poor” they prate about is a crock.

On the other hand, it wants to make a majority of middle class Americans dependent, at least in health insurance, on government subsidies. None of the social encyclicals endorsed this kind of thing and, in fact, opposed it.

There are a lot of things on both sides of the aisle that the Church would not be thrilled about. I’m not too happy about some insurance sharks raising their rates 20% as they record record profits and give their CEO’s and big wigs multi-million dollar bonuses. They raise the rates of the lowly subscriber, try as best they can to justify dropping someone due to prior conditions, and pocket more money than any industry around in a failing economy. The whole idea is un-Christian IMO. And the Democrats do little to get the costs down, rob Medicare to pay for Medical, which has always proven itself to be a lousy program in itself. The GOP will blow money hand over fist on wars to bring democracy to Islamic nations that have no desire or will to be free and the Dems blow money on stimulus, cap and trade, and garbage like this. One party wraps themselves in the flag and accuses everyone of being unpatriotic and the other one apologizes around the world for America being a bully. One favors the country club crowd, one favors the extremely poor. The middle class gets jack squat. I hate 'em both! 👍

Personally, I believe that ‘social justice’ has been corrupted and used to push an agenda that has nothing to do with the teachings of the church. And it’s used as an excuse to ignore the bigger issues. How many catholics did you hear supporting Obama in the last election because the so-called ‘good’ he was supposed to do was going to outweigh the evil of abortion that he supports. That kind of nonsense is wrapped in the pretense of social justice and I’m pretty tired of it. There’s no reason to use the issues to ignore the hard teachings of the church.

And frankly, most of these ‘social justice’ issues are meant to be addressed individually and/or within the church. People need to be taught the principle of subsidiarity and learn that the church teaches us to NOT rely on the government to fix all our problems but that we are meant to address these areas personally, as part of service to God and fellow men. If people care so much about these issues, they should go out and participate personally to bring about change, not allow the government to do evil in the pretense of doing good.

And as far as Glenn Beck goes, I’m with him. If I’m at a church that starts emphasizing social justice agendas that’s a clue for me to hit the bricks and find a new parish.

There are certain groups…usually the most vocal are the ones who get caught up with unbalanced and compromised perspective…good guy vs. bad guy. Fortunately, I had other things to do and couldn’t go to this retreat. Instead of the annual spiritual retreat, it was on global warming with faulty science at that and little spirituality.

No matter how much people may think otherwise, we are all interconnected far more than we realize than being divided up into political camps.

I complain about various people in leadership…but I have to keep reminding myself not to complain about them but try to pray more for them.

You’re definitely right about the silliness of the proposals we heard during Obama’s campaign from Catholics that the evils of abortion could be put aside for all the social benefits of the Democratic agenda. It didn’t deliver and abortion is more available than ever. The country has benefited from nothing and just has higher deficits and more financial problems, huge unemployment, and chaos.

But the problem with the “keep government out of everything” philosophy is that some issues need regulation and to be kept in check. Personally I wonder how a little portability and tort reform, as the GOP proposes, will get millions and millions of people covered? I also wonder how portability and tort reform will take care of the way insurance companies find every way to dump or discriminate against people with serious health issues or prior conditions? I also wonder how a little portability and tort reform will keep insurance companies from raising their rates to record levels while they’re still reporting record profits that are obscene and only serve to cause people to drop their insurance and pray to God they don’t get a major illness? Will portability and tort reform keep insurance companies and the health care system honest? If tort reform comes along, will the doctor’s savings from less malpractice insurance translate to savings for the patient? Will the doctor say, “since I’m saving $80,000 this year in malpractice insurance drops, I think I’ll lower my office fees for my customers and give 'em all a discount?!” I don’t think so. It’s human nature that he’ll pocket the profit.

Insurance rates, pharmaceutical prices, health care in general are increasing far faster than the rate of wage increases in America. Some people’s entire paychecks go to health care in marriages. My parents’ income was largely sucked away for medical because they had to insure themselves. It was stifling. Now my dad’s on Tricare, medical from the military (a government program!) and he loves it! Then Medicare will come along, which my grandparents are on and like as well. If they all had to fend for themselves, God help them.

It’s easy for people to trash the post office and other government agencies. Some gov’t programs work, some are a dismal failure like Medical. The post office has taken one mean hit with the advent of the internet and a huge loss in funding from stamp purchases, etc. My wife makes pays all our bills online and we only buy stamps once a year now. Is it government’s fault the post office is in deep doodoo or is it my fault for never buying stamps and the whole program is in crisis?

I find it weird that the Republicans, who fought their hearts out AGAINST social security and medicare, are now the ones so desperately concerned about seniors losing it or part of it from this new health care legislation.

My point is this: The Democrats’ current bill STINKS to high heaven. It’s absurd, too long, doesn’t address the problem, will bankrupt us, will throw our kids into huge hock, and it expands the wrong program, Medical, putting outrageous mandates on states in a time of financial crisis. California, my state, will collapse from these mandates as we’re already in an abyss…The Dems have failed, miserably. But the Republicans have no real solution either. Portability and tort reform are the only songs they sing. They just want to stall it, protect the insurance fat cats and big pharm tycoons, the rich as usual, and hope this blows over. They’re using it as a political card, nothing more. The Dems are in love with abortion and for that they had to give up on single-payer. The Republicans will never do anything about this.

We need a third party, another option, a different perspective, moderate, rational, human approaches, not the Dems condemning Republicans for cutting free-lunch programs and wanting to starve children while the Republicans cry “socialist!” every ten minutes. I’m irritated exceedingly by it ALL! People tell me regarding a third party, “never gonna happen!” and “it isn’t feasible” etc. I really don’t care. I don’t like either option and I’m too much of a realist to buy into Beck, Limbaugh, Schultz, Olbermann, Savage, NPR, or any of it. Both parties have very very un-Christian behavior and ideals just in different directions. The truth lay in the middle. There’s a place for government and in other areas of life no place for it. The truth isn’t simple and it isn’t a quick fix and these ideaologies only compound our problems. 🤷

For me, Christian Social Justice is an extension of Catholic Eucharistic Theology. I can find no better encapsulation of this than this wonderful quotation from Bishop Frank Weston given at the 1923 Anglo-Catholic Conference:

“You cannot claim to worship Jesus in the Tabernacle, if you do not pity Jesus in the slums. . . It is folly – it is madness – to suppose that you can worship Jesus in the Sacraments and Jesus on the throne of glory, when you are sweating him in the souls and bodies of his children.”

This from St. John Chrysostom is also to the point:

“Week by week you come to the Lord’s table to receive bread and wine. What do these things mean to you? Do you regard them merely as some kind of spiritual medicine, which will purge your soul, like a laxative may purge your body? Or do you sometimes wonder what God is saying in these simple elements? Bread and wine represent the fruits of our labor, whereby we turn the things of nature into food and drink for our sustenance. So at the Lord’s table we offer our labor to God, dedicating ourselves anew to his service. Then the bread and the wine are distributed equally to every member of the congregation; the poor receive the same amount as the rich. This means that God’s material blessings belong equally to everyone, to be enjoyed according to each person’s need. The whole ceremony is also a meal at which everyone has an equal place at the table.”

Under the Mercy,
Mark

All is Grace and Mercy! Deo Gratias!

I was at a friend’s house. We were celebrating St. Patrick’s. Glenn Beck was on…he’s from Mt Vernon, WA, where my mother’s mother grew up…that is a plus.

What he was speaking about yesterday was the massive misappropriation of tax dollars…

I worked in the missions and the one thing we did not want to do for people was to give them literal hand outs, because it would cripple them. The first thing we would do is get them to think.

That is the other issue Glenn Beck is addressing is that he believes the Federal Government with all its waste wants to be all for everyone…

I remember growing up and how I thought the conservatives were so weird…

Glenn Beck is actually makes a lot of sense. The following is a must watch video. Why has the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) funneled 280 million dollars to organizations fighting for abortion and gay marriage?
