Now is the time for great caution and scrutiny with regards to all those speaking in the public square in the name of the Roman Catholic Church. This is a time when image and message must be completely conformed to the Magisterium. No loose cannons need to to be unleashed upon the scene at this critical time.
Conversely, the Church needs for those with clearly evident charisms for preaching to be identified and given visible platforms which can best maximize their gifts. Also, we need to see and hear from, and read about, the multidude of humble, grace-imbued nuns, monks, hermits, missionaries, etc., who are contemporaneously out there, doing the hard work of the Lord, laboring in obscurity. We need to see our modern day saints. There number is greater than anyone knows.
Anectdotally, I must relate a little story. I was sitting on the couch and had just switched the T.V. channel to EWTN. My wife walked past, looked at the T.V., listened for a minute, then grabbed the clicker out of my hands and abruptly changed the channel. Shocked, I asked, “Why did you do that?”, she anwered, without hesitation, “I’m tired of hearing gay-sounding priests. It is not helpful right now”. Now, my wife is a woman of the world who travels the country on a weekly basis and hears alot more bashing than I do, and is quite sophisticated, but she is a devout Roman Catholic, and a fierce defender of the faith. So, I sort of gave her a look that called on her to expound a bit, and she added, " Where are all the Fulton Sheen’s?" I was silent. Who could answer that question; I certainly can not. It appears that image really does matter. I make no judgement here, I merely offer up some food for thought.
