If you knew the understandings of those ancient terms IN Scriptures - as well as Scriptures,
you’d Understand the Answer to the OP’s Christ’s descent into hell Question,
and would not yet still have any more need for Clarification
Please keep in mind that not all who read your responses actually possess that background. I do. I think you might. But not all readers do. So, IMHO, we should take painstaking care that we explain these things thoroughly, so that no one gets the wrong idea when reading them. James 3:1, brother… šŸ˜‰

This is based on a revelation given to Saint Peter. It is recorded in 1 Peter 3:18-20 and 1 Peter 4:6. He descended to the ā€œrighteous deadā€ who could not enter heaven until our Lord opened the gates at His ascension.

Yes… and Fair Enough… And I’ll Keep this focus upon the OP - Christ’s Descent into hell…

Sheol Hebrew aka Greek Hades - gets rendered as hell
Greek Gehenna aka Hebrew Hinno gets rendered as Hell
Tartaroo = also gets rendered as Hell
Lake of Fire and Second Death are understood as Hell

BACK TO THE OP

As per 1 Peter 3 - the place where Jesus is said to have gone to after the Crucifixion
so that as per 1 Peter 4 - to preach the Gospel to those dead who were there…
so that in spirit they MIGHT Live…
is in Greek -- φυλακῇ (phylakē) aka ā€œprisonā€ in English…

In the Vulgate we have the same understanding in 1 Peter 3…

quia et Christus semel pro peccatis mortuus est iustus pro iniustis
ut nos offerret Deo mortificatus carne vivificatus autem spiritu

Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God,
being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit,

in quo et his qui in carcere erant spiritibus veniens praedicavit
In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison:

AS a connected aside - this Understanding Might dovetail in some manners with PURgatory
that is … a means of PURIFYING our spirit - via accepting the Gospel - still via our Free Will

Purgation isn’t the result of ā€œacceptanceā€ or the exercise of free will – it happens by virtue of being judged for heaven, but being imperfect. And, as we read in Rev 21:27, nothing imperfect can enter heaven.

It’s an interesting question you raise – that of the connection between ā€˜sheol’ and ā€˜purgation’. If one died and was purified, but Jesus had not yet died on the cross… that purified person would still remain in sheol until Jesus came to lead him into heaven with the rest of the OT just. So, there are probably correlations there, but not a strict one-to-one understanding of the two notions.

what’s unclear in that … is the How the imPurfect spirit becomes Purfect…

Yes… Pur is cognate with Fir(e) - With actual Fir(e) used to Purify e.g., Gold…

Were we to connect what we’re discussing
to what is being said re: Jesus and spirits who died in the flesh - in 1 Pet 3 and 1 Pet 4
  • we’d see that Jesus’s Preaching the Gospel is not something of which
those spirits thus hearing the Gospel - would most definitely accept - but rather, they Might…
which strongly suggests that Free Will must be still in action.

Jesus desceded into ā€œHadesā€.

That is the abode of the dead.

He preached to the spirits in captivity and eventually led them into Heaven as no man could enter Heaven until Jesus opened it up Himself to mankind.

I know what you are thinking.
What about Elijah going off to Heaven?

But that was the same Hebrew word for ā€œthe skyā€.
Elijah just went off to the sky.
We are not told what happened with him. We don’t know.
We just know what DIDN’T happen.
Elijah did not open the gates of Heaven. (Jesus did.)

As the Roman Catechism says. No son of Adam entered Heaven until Jesus (who is true God and true Man) went back to Heaven in that sense.

ā€œAt present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.ā€ Or do you have a problem with God’s Word? šŸ˜‰

Thank you for being candid about yourself.

God’s Word says:

FYI … Jesus preached the Gospel to those in a prison - aka - a holding tank.

You know what I like about you, EndTimes? You always give me a good laugh. Have a wonderful day!

Some used to call your reaction - the ā€œgiggle hurtsā€

your argument became debunked - so you giggle at the one who debunked thee…
in a failed effort to conceal that failure… hahahaha…

Nice try. No, I just deferred discussing, once it became clear that no rational discussion was possible. Proverbs 15:21, brother – I’m just choosing to walk away. šŸ˜‰

Look into humility you all. Man the pride and egos in thia thread

ā€œI knowā€ ā€œThis isā€
As if you (not personally you) can speak for Christ. Its a room full of know it alls.

No humility
No acceptance
No anything but judgement

Oh and btw as St Augustine says, pride is the quickest trip to hell.

When it says ā€œfree from sinā€, that references Jesus or us?
