Sheol Hebrew aka Greek Hades - gets rendered as hell
Greek Gehenna aka Hebrew Hinno gets rendered as Hell
Tartaroo = also gets rendered as Hell
Lake of Fire and Second Death are understood as Hell

As per 1 Peter 3 - the place where Jesus is said to have gone to after the Crucifixion
so that as per 1 Peter 4 - to preach the Gospel to those dead who were thereā¦

In the Vulgate we have the same understanding in 1 Peter 3ā¦

Purgation isnāt the result of āacceptanceā or the exercise of free will ā it happens by virtue of being judged for heaven, but being imperfect. And, as we read in Rev 21:27, nothing imperfect can enter heaven.
Itās an interesting question you raise ā that of the connection between āsheolā and āpurgationā. If one died and was purified, but Jesus had not yet died on the crossā¦ that purified person would still remain in sheol until Jesus came to lead him into heaven with the rest of the OT just. So, there are probably correlations there, but not a strict one-to-one understanding of the two notions.

Were we to connect what weāre discussing
to what is being said re: Jesus and spirits who died in the flesh - in 1 Pet 3 and 1 Pet 4
- weād see that Jesusās Preaching the Gospel is not something of which
those spirits thus hearing the Gospel - would most definitely accept - but rather, they Mightā¦

Elijah did not open the gates of Heaven. (Jesus did.)
As the Roman Catechism says. No son of Adam entered Heaven until Jesus (who is true God and true Man) went back to Heaven in that sense.
