Not too go off subject but I think our bodies have gotten too used to AC that it is hard for us to tolerate being anywhere with out it. That is why no one is outside in our neighborhoods anymore.

Typically I am not a fan of shorts at Mass but if it is all you have, yes, go to Mass.

I could be wrong but I didn’t read the OP that way. I took it that he was just asking if shorts are acceptable at Mass. I take that as a general question.
I should have asked: Are shorts acceptable in the case where I can’t wear long pants?

I’d say in general dress according to the standards of those around you. I attend the vigil and the usual is basically nice shirt and reasonable-length shorts in summer. More formal attire would actually draw attention.

Is there some compelling reason why you can’t do both?
Usually, no. Sometimes, yes.

But this still begs the question of what is “nice” a concept that changes with the times and fashion.

Let’s put it this way: for the Mass, one should wear the nicest clothes you have. If you have something better than shorts, tee-shirts and flip-flops, then wear it. Don’t wear to Mass what you would wear for yard work or a picnic at the park.

Many people have stated that it’s “too hot” for long pants. 😩 Really? Look at those pictures I posted. Did your grandparents wear shorts because “it’s too hot for long pants”? Maximilian Kolbe voluntarily agreed to be starved and dehydrated to death to save a stranger’s life. We can surely be a little hot for an hour, can’t we?

Suffering is a part of Catholicism. Toughen up , pansies!!! 😠😄

During the summer I wear shorts to Mass and when serving put on long black socks and black shoes (looks fine wearing a cassock), our clergy do it as well. If I’m not serving I still wear shorts (just above the knee).

This is how we used to dress for Mass:
It’s not a “for Mass” thing. It’s a social thing. My mother would dress like those ladies in the first picture… just to go shopping. And what the men were wearing, is what my father would wear every day to work. He was a salesman.

We dress more casually now and I for one welcome it; when I started my career, as a manager I was obliged to wear a dress shirt, dress pants and a necktie even if the latter was a hazard if I had to go into the manufacturing area; then the rule was relaxed and ties were optional and I ditched mine as soon as I could. If I can at all help it I will never wear a necktie again, unless my wife chooses to put one on me in my casket if I croak before her.

That said, I (60 y.o. male) won’t wear shorts to Mass. For Sundays, chinos and a nice short-sleeved shirt in summer, nice cords and a long-sleeved shirt in winter, and whatever works for the days’ weather in the in-between seasons. I also attend weekday Mass at the abbey where I work in the library (volunteer). I may wear something more casual that day like jeans or cargo pants if I know I’m going to be working in the dusty stacks shifting books around; the library recently expanded and we’re moving stuff to new shelving units.

However I have no problem with people wearing shorts in hot weather, as long as modesty is respected; in Bermuda, Bermuda shorts are considered formal attire after all! I have much more trouble with those I see wearing immodest clothes, in spite of the sign in front of the abbey.

I honestly don’t understand - - long pants are “too hot”, but coat and tie aren’t? 🤣😂

I do, too. I don’t dress anything like those pictures! I just try to look “decent” at Mass, which for me is long pants always, but not jeans or sneakers. Just a thing with me. People really dressed to the nines in the old days, even grocery shopping. What a different world now.

I honestly can’t decide if they look nice or silly. Maybe both! New rule: Shorts at Mass should always be accompanied with jacket, tie and patent leather shoes! 😁

Apparently this is the “proper” way to wear Bermuda shorts “ensemble” (says a random website). Don’t tell the Americans!

You won’t find me wearing shorts at Mass.

But in summer, you won’t ever find me wearing long pants outside of Mass unless it’s unseasonably cold out!

The joys of retirement. I can wear what I want except at funerals, weddings, and Mass (once upon a time funerals and weddings would automatically be at a Mass, or at least in a church… now not so much).

Wow.

Masaccio must never have seen a real fig tree 🤣

Even early in the season, that’s just not the shape. As they mature, they’re several inches, maybe even a foot across and long . . .

(also, they produce fruit about four times a year!)

so where do I find patent snakeskin western boots (in wide sizes, at that!)?

🤣👢

Just for my part, I don’t think I could bring myself to enter the church door in short pants. On the other hand, I live in a booming tourist destination, and my church is regularly full of attendees in shorts–quite a few of them, I suspect, simply didn’t pack anything else, which I can easily picture myself doing by accident! So I’m pretty much reconciled to letting our Lord be the judge of whatever resulted in certain sartorial choices.
