It’s scary how much of a hold these stories have over some people so that they won’t even consider that there might be something wrong with them. If only people would hold to the dogma of the Church as rigidly.

Exactly! I’ve placed articles from Euteneuer regarding Potter on another forum site, and whenever I do, within seconds (literally), the rabid pro-Potters attack.

Quotes from three official Church exorcists:

Who better knows Satan than an exorcist? The movie is a “trick” in and of itself. Would a parent let their child eat spoiled chicken just because the rest of the meal is delicious and well presented? Wake up moms and dads, aunts and uncles. Your beautiful children, nieces and nephews, are looking for you to make good decisions for them.

I’m currently reading Exorcism and the Church Militant (I found a few copies), and have read Michael D. O’Brien’s Harry Potter and the Paganization of Culture. Both are extraordinary reads.

There’s also a quote from a Bishop quoted earlier in the thread saying it isn’t Harry Potter that is driving children to the occult, it is isolation from faith. And I think that maybe these priests, who have fought against Satan and his demons as exorcists, are right in warning of the dangers in dabbling with the Occult, but they are using Harry Potter as a scape goat when it isn’t really the ‘witch craft’ of Wiccans and other pagans.

Some posters have acted like those of us defending the series have ‘jumped on them’ from when they posted, but the OP ultimately called out those who would defend it. All we are saying is there are real dangers with the Occult that can attract our youths, but even the Bishop knows that Harry Potter isn’t one of them, so by focusing on the series, you are losing sight of the actual threats.

Anyways, Not one child told J. K. Rowling that thanks to Harry Potter they were converting so they would be like Harry and his friends. They know its not real. Sorry for this bad post. hehe

Isn’t that where all our problems, sins, and sorrows come from? An isolation from faith? And threats are everywhere, of course. I agree. Absolutely everywhere. But this includes through movies and books as well. One should remain vigilant at all times.

Oh! And weather you like it or not, Harry Potter and Rowling is here to stay. Just like The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien. They really affected literature today and Rowling said that the greatest things fans had said to her was that thanks to her they now enjoy reading. I am one of those fans. 🙂

No - according to C.S. Lewis, pride is the worst of the 7 deadly sins because that is the driving force behind all of the others. Isolation of faith isn’t a broad term for choosing to reject God’s love by sinning. Isolation of faith is by not participating in one’s religion. For example, taking a child to church, making it seem like a chore, and having no religious activity until mass the following Sunday would be isolating a child from his faith. Reading a fictional book containing magic would not be considered that, nor would watching a show with provocatively dressed women.

Threats are not everywhere, and it is broad generalizations that are damning certain aspects of our culture that shouldn’t be. What makes the magic in Harry Potter different from that used by Gandalf and the Elves, or Aslan and the other creatures of Narnia? Yet no one would accuse those books, written by a Catholic and a very conservative and orthodox Anglican (with Catholic tendencies), respectively, of being full of traps that would draw someone to Hell. So why is Harry Potter?

As readers of the book have repeated many times, there are virtuous aspects, heroic aspects, and strong moral aspects, just as in these other notable series. So if the magic is the same, the good morals are valued and praised while evil is detested and fought against (in a virtuous way) as it is in the other series, then how is it anymore of a ‘threat’ than these other series?

That is exactly what O’Brien’s book addresses. It’s a great read for parents that are concerned about not just Harry Potter, but similar type movies. We are being bombarded by Satan. The sooner folks realize this, the sooner they’ll start praying more for their children and themselves … there’s also fasting, attending Mass more frequently, visiting an Adoration chapel, reciting the Rosary, going to Confession … the list is endless … it’s great to be a Catholic … 😃
 
No, that’s not what I was saying. Another movie of concern would be Twilight and this is what Fr. Euteneuer had to say about The Alien movies:
The Alien movies featured a vicious, rapacious little creature that emerges out of the stomachs of people looking like a fetus transformed into a fang-toothed ravaging demon. Some believe that this movie represents the epitome of demonic glorification of abortion. Be that as it may, the devil’s spawn are not hard to recognize. It’s just too bad that most of our faith-deprived society thinks that they are only harmless “entertainment.”

O’Brien’s book, though, is an eye-opener to those who have done little research into the potential harm that the HP series might encourage; he is a well-known highly-regarded Catholic writer. Do you know of him?

The in quotes you presented are absurd. Monsters with fangs do not “exist”. They are not real and no they aren’t out to get you. They come from a place in the human mind called “fantasy”.

I have to wonder why conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with abortion…suddenly a segway is formed to put abortion in the topic.🤷 It is not relavant to this topic.

Someone writes a book to incite paranoia among the faithful. Common sense would dictate that evil cannot prevail, period.

What is the difference between Harry Potter and the works of Edgar Allen Poe…or Lewis Carroll…or Walt Disney? How many little girls wanted to be the evil queen in Snow White and make a potion to put in an apple? or when the evil queen in Sleeping Beauty turned herself into a fire breathing dragon? That was my generation. How about the Wizard of Oz? Now there is a scary witch that did cast spells…and the movie was made in 1939…:eek:

Greek and Roman mythology were part of the curriculum in high school. Lots of spell casting and monsters in there. Clash of Titans…the 1981 version was great. 👍

Are you telling me that you or your children never read any Greek Myths or watched Wizard of Oz or Disney fairytales?

I wouldn’t know; never tried a spell. But I’ve heard if one says,“Accio!” while pointing at an object and someone is there with you they will bring the object to you. You may have to say it a couple of times.😃

I hasten to add that being Catholic totally makes up for not getting into Hogwarts. Or not being Buffy.

I’m a huge fan of Euteneuer’s, so I would not refer to his writings as “absurd,” even though I haven’t seen the movies myself, but Fr. Euteneuer was the popular and well-loved president of Human Life International, so anything he writes regarding that which is evil would also pertain to abortion somehow, which is Satan’s most profitable baby.

:hmmm: so you had conversations with evil and it told you this…interesting.

Two points:
  1. Logic…would dictate that humans are most useful if “alive”.
  2. At the end of the day, Fr. Euteneuer is as human as you or I.
