Church leaders back govt on anti-gay Bill

**It seems there was a change of heart between August and December. **Appearances can be deceptive though.

I think it more likely that the ramifications, especially regarding the sanctity of the confessional, were not understood at the time of the conference. When they were… the Church was horrified.

That such a swift (for the Church) response came, and from such a high level,** indicates that the Archbishop’s reply was always the real policy**. It’s certainly the one I would have expected.

The Archbishop’s reply needs to be widely publicised, to correct the misapprehension many - including myself - had about the Ugandan Church.

Please show a contrary statement from August to support your assumption that there was a “change of heart.” I asked earlier in the thread for something quoting a Bishop’s support of the bill, but it was never forthcoming.

I agree with your later, though strangely contrary, opinion that it “was always the real policy.”

We must also remember that the Catholic Church is often the last group to issue a statement because our deliberations take longer.
The Ugandan government is preparing for a genocide against the gay community and, at best, imprison anyone who doesn’t turn homosexuals over to the State to be murdered. What is there to deliberate? That the Catholic Church in Uganda would even need to debate the morality, or lack thereof, of this is an outrage!

Please post something that has lead you to believe that the Catholic Church in Uganda has been debating it. They’ve made a clear statement against it…do you have a link contrary to that statement? I mean, if you are going to be “outraged,” it should be based on something solid.

What else have they been doing for the last few months? They should have announced opposition immediately.

So, you have nothing but supposition. You can be outraged based on assumptions and supposition, if you like. It isn’t a good way to live your life though imho.

False. The FACT is that this legislation was on the table for MONTHS before the Ugandan Catholic Church said anything about it. Why did it take the Ugandan Catholic Church MONTHS to express opposition to the genocide of homosexuals? Whats even more outrageous is the fact that the Ugandan Catholic Church has taken decades, if not longer, to express even a so/so opposition to the imprisonment of homosexuals.

They have spoken out against both the death penalty and imprisonment. I’m sorry it wasn’t according to your personal timeframe. I don’t know what individual bishops and priests have been saying in the meantime, but it is not unusual for an official statement to take a while to be crafted.

Since no one has posted any contrary statement from a bishop or priest, the outrage is nonsense based on supposition. Praise God that the Church has spoken out and the President of Uganda joins them in condemning the bill. With the help of His Grace, the bill won’t pass.

My personal time frame? The Ugandan Catholic Church, and the Church as a whole, has been mum for decades about blatant human rights abuses and silent for months about State mandated genocide and you take issue with my personal time table?! All of this sounds vaguely familiar.

I agree…I’ve seen baseless outrage from you before…

So you think it’s justifiable for the Church to be utterly silent for any length of time when comes to persecution and a holocaust of homosexuals?

Where have I said that? You are making charges with no evidence.
The evidence is contained without your own statements. You pretend that a toothless statement after the fact excuses decades of silence in regards to persecution and months of silence in regards to a proposed genocide.

I suspect there were a lot of things done privately behind ths scenes…The Vatican has the oldest diplomatic service in the world…and sometimes doing things quietly is a better way to handle things so there isn’t a backlash against the Catholics in that country

I think Africa is heavily Muslim in many parts

You have yet to give any evidence of the “decades of persecution” that the Church has remained silent on, so I don’t even know what persecution you are talking about. If you could provide a coherent argument, with support, I will be happy to address it.

Homosexuality has been a criminal offense punishable by incarceration for up to 14 years in Uganda for decades.
