The Church of England is moving toward authorizing its clergy to perform same sex “marriages.” This comment by @sonofberea is reposted from an Anglican website, the
Archbishop Cranmer blog:
… … …

In advance of the “Living in Love and Faith” exercise going public I have written to the Archbishop of Canterbury. I wanted to remind him of the physical harm that male SS relationships can cause and also to invite him to remember that the NT uses the word “love” almost exclusively in the sense of “agape” and to hope that the LLF would maintain that sense of self-sacrificial, rather than sensuous or self-serving love.

I have had a reply from ++JW’s “Correspondence Manager.” It did not address my specific points but I thought the following comments were worth passing on, for those of you struggling with loyalty to the CofE. The letter notes that “the Archbishop is often asked to speak decisively on matters of human sexuality” but he “has no formal authority, although a great deal of influence. He has encouraged the start of a process of deep reflection on the topic.”

It anticipates that the process of bringing LLF into effect will then “enable us all to have more wisdom in these very complicated areas of our life together.” It then notes that “moving to make provision for SS marriage, rather than blessing, or any other form of partnership, would represent a huge shift in terms of doctrine of marriage, but also in terms of how we understand humanity, gender, embodiment etc.” It does not exclude the possibility that such changes may happen in some provinces but that “they need to be discussed and prayed through thoroughly.”

It concludes that while there is no overall consensus, “what Archbishop Justin has done so far is to encourage respectful discussion of how we, as a whole church, can move forward together.”

I am no expert on the CofE but there may be one straw in the wind in the phrase “moving to make provision for SS marriage, rather than blessing…” I may have missed something but I thought the CofE had ruled against even having services of blessing for a SS couple. This phrase might suggest that some movement on that red line may be in the offing. It will, of course, be a further peg on which the activists will hang their efforts to eventually force full SS marriage on the church.

Patience. All will be revealed in time. Everything begins with small steps and study and dialogue and …

then the bottom falls out.

This is why ecumenism as it has been defined has failed. There will never be unity. We should focus instead on evangelization

Yes. Of course, it might differ a bit from diocese to diocese, but for 5 years or so, one can find a means to bless or celebrate a ss marriage.

Except maybe in Albany. Not sure what the deal is with + Love.

I don’t recommend the national catholic distorter newspaper but since this is in line with their particular ethos, it is very telling.

The German Church has been going off the deep end since the late 1800s (possibly longer than that). But they have really gone to extreme lengths after the Second Vatican Council (seizing on every opportunity to push the envelope).

How weird. I was under the impression German churches were on the liberal side, but I didn’t think it was this bad. Interesting that there are no few German churches in the U.S., but they’re very different from this. Looks like the U.S. Germans got out in time.

What else can you expect from a church whose cause was largely promoted by a king who beheaded two of his wives and died of complications that were likely worsened by syphilis.

For now. There are parishes like this within the United States all over the place. Typically they are in the liberal states. Politics tend to be fused with the faith for a lot of people. This is natural since our politics “should” be infused by our faith to help us with using right judgement. But when the politics turns to contradicting our faith, this leads to all sorts of havoc for those who cling too tightly to their politics and let their faith suffer for it. The result are priests (like the one at some church in San Dimas, CA) draping the gay pride flag over the altar for Mass.

“When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth?” Like 18: 8.

The standard bio of Horny Hank is Scarisbrick’s HENRY VIII. He (and all scholars on the topic for a hundred years or so) do not prefer syphilis as Henry’s maladie de choix. Scarisbrick backs either varicose veins, or osteomyelitis.
