The standard bio of Horny Hank is Scarisbrick’s HENRY VIII. He (and all scholars on the topic for a hundred years or so) do not prefer syphilis as Henry’s maladie de choix. Scarisbrick backs either varicose veins, or osteomyelitis.
“Horny Hank” - nearly spat coffee on my phone 🤣🤣🤣

H. H. and His Hormones is the name I give to the subject. A hobby of mine for many years.

This is why ecumenism as it has been defined has failed. There will never be unity. We should focus instead on evangelization
Exactly. As the prophet Amos said, 'How can two walk together if they disagree?"

The only ecumenism worth pursuing is with the Orthodox Churches. As for the others, forget it. The idea that Catholics can have meaningful unity with Protestants is a utopian fantasy.

Ecumenism and “inter-faith dialogue” have killed the Church’s missionary spirit. My uncle was a “missionary” priest in India -n the 1960’s and he told me he never tried to convert anyone to the Catholic faith - on the contrary, he aimed to ‘make Hindus better Hindus’. Can you believe that? I reminded him that the title, ‘missionary’, comes from Jesus’ command to “make disciples of all the nations”.

I recall a Catholic bishop in the Middle East somewhere boasting that his Church has not had one Muslim convert in fifty years. Bizarre.

Then again, we also disagree with Orthodoxy… IMO Oriental Orthodoxy has the best chance to join us- especially Armenian Church. Also, many Protestants are now realizing that Catholic Church isn’t as bad as they thought so there is a chance of fresh air coming from the West too… especially since every time Protestant Church liberalizes their doctrine, conservative people leave and want to find Church that fits their ideals.

In my country, one Evangelical “Bishop” said that he would bring his flock over to Catholicism if he was younger. Orthodox Churches aren’t as friendly with us as Evangelicals are… which is ironic.

But whole point of Ecumenism lies in that we want to save others and provide them with chance to get eternal Salvation- chance of success might be low but it is our duty. If nothing else, this verse is helpful;

Ezekiel 3:18
When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

What else can you expect from a church whose cause was largely promoted by a king who beheaded two of his wives and died of complications that were likely worsened by syphilis.
Glass houses. Glass houses.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Every church not in communion with Rome will continue to loosen their stance on issues like this until there is no difference between their doctrine and what society at large is comfortable with.

Save for those who do otherwise. Continuing Anglicans, for example.

Other sorts of Anglicans, certainly.

The ones that don’t need to be targeted and brought back into communion with Rome at all costs.

Yes. Becoming liberal has been the “kiss of death” in mainstream Protestantism:
  • The Presbyterian Church (USA) closes 120-150 churches every year (143 in 2018, 147 in 2017)
  • The Presbyterian Church of America (their conservative counterpart) has consistently gained membership for decades
  • The Episcopal Church lost 4.2% of their membership in one year from 2017-2018
  • The liberal ELCA Lutherans lost 70,000 people a year, and 90 churches in a year

Or religion in general is declining in a society that thinks it has no need for our “primitive superstition”?

And demographics, generally.
Those are probably the answers. I was joking around… I don’t live in USA nor do I have any way to judge whether USA Catholics are liberal or conservative. I probably haven’t personally met any USA Catholic in my life- or at least to my knowledge I haven’t.

They are motley, in my experience. Not as motley as Anglicans, but, still…

The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ.

The Church of England was founded by Henry VIII … pretty embarrassing.

You can expect false doctrine and false teaching from a false church.
