Co redemptrix dogmatically defined?

I am finding ABU’s post confusing; is he trying to say that Co-Redemtrix is a DOGMA. If he isn’t why is he trying to tell us to adhere to Dogma. My post was to emphasise that it is not Dogma and that respect for the Magesterium of the Church is also in being patient and let it decide in it’s own good time what is Dogma rather than trying to run some sort of propaganda campaign to influence it like some type of parlimentary debate. The only influence should be the HOLY SPIRIT. Also respect of the Magesterium should be to accept DOGMA as recieved and also to accept NO when told too.

It seems to me there are a lot of people out there who can’t accept NO and don’t see a problem with this.

Please read again the 4 church dogmatic doctrines on Mary ; if there is another maybe you should inform the POPE.

The poster’s point is that Mary’s co-redemption, although not yet a definitively formulated dogma, is nonetheless an authentic and official expression of the ordinary teaching magisterium, and therefore requires the full intellectual assent of the faithful. Do you understand what that means?

You have confused yourself.
  1. All dogma has to be believed on divine and Catholic faith.
  2. Infallible doctrine has to be firmly embraced and held.
  3. Non-infallible doctrine has to be assented to intellectually – with submission of intellect and will.
Mary as Co-redemptrix and Mediatrix of all graces are doctrines
Last time I checked, Abu was not the one who defines doctrines of The Catholic Church. The problematic title of Co-redemptrix is not a doctrine of The Catholic Church and your assertion does not make it so.

This Sunday is Laetre, let us rejoice. Laetare, Jerusalem!!!

Ignatius
Fr. Levis clearly states that it is not a formally defined teaching.
Error 1:
Strange how Ignatius falsely makes clarity into the opacity of mud, – for Fr Levis clearly affirms “Mary’s title of Co-Redemptrix has not been formally defined as dogma” (post#106).

Error 2:
Ignatius has falsely accused Abu of being determined to declare the thread title a Dogma (see post #113), without any substantiation.

Error 3:
Ignatius has falsely declared as an alternative Magisterium, that the thread title is not a doctrine – with no justification offered, against Fr. Robert J. Levis (EWTN) on Nov-27-2006, as the definitive teaching of the Church, post #103.

Abu,

I give you a huge thumbs up for being patient and charitable in spite of the heavy temptation to headbang.

If only I could defend you in a way that would sway.

But if I did so,

I would be in a place that would be darker than hell to me
The access to ones like you would be forever taken away from me.

The situation requires and demands…

For us to sit back and wonder why.

ABU can you just give a straight answer; IS CO-REDEMTRIX a DOGMA or NOT a simple yes or no. I do not consider myself a genius but neither am I a fool. All your answers seem to obscure the truth and throw a smokescreen around this one simple question now just say either one of these statements whichever it is that you believe is the truth
  1. Mary is Co-redemprix is an official church DOGMA
or
  1. Mary is Co-redemtrix is NOT an official church DOGMA
nothing more ; one or the other. Please keep it alone in one post so we can all be clear.
If you want to say more on the subject put it in a seperate post so we dont need to decifer the answer to this one VITAL question.

ABU can you just give a straight answer; IS CO-REDEMTRIX a DOGMA or NOT a simple yes or no.
The Church has not declared as dogma that Mary is Co-redemptrix.

This has been made clear by me in posts #18, 103, 106, 113, 122.

Mary as Co-redemptrix is a doctrine.

Thank you ABU ; thats as close to my request as you could go ; you managed to state that its not a Dogma but still had to qualify your answer. But at least now its clearer 👍

it is a dangerous and un needed doctrine that is so easy to become heretical.
To me that’s an argument for a dogmatic definition. Because, whether the “doctrine” is “un-needed” (or not) it doesn’t make it untrue.
Yes she is an important example to us all . Just as Mary had to submit her will and accept to become Gods handmaid we have to accept him to. If we make her a co-redemtrix that places her on par with Christ
No, it doesn’t. That’s a misunderstanding of the doctrine. “Co” is not to be understood as “equal to” but rather “cooperating with” our Savior. Again, misunderstandings like this, to me, make a strong argument that the doctrine should be dogmatically defined – so there is no confusion.
  • how would that tear at the heart of the True Virgin. And next thing we would soon be elevated to co-redemtrix of our own souls as of course we have a choice to accept or reject God. We are redeemed to God through Christ and its through Gods graces we are saved. Anything else is heretical and an abomination.
Except you’re misunderstanding the doctrine. I think the problem is that most people don’t understand how much we should honor Our Lady or exactly how magnificent the title “Mother of God” really is. Our Lady is not just a saintly woman (though she is that of course), her honor and her grace are at a much, much higher level than any other creature ever in existence. I think we’re much more likely to dishonor her by too little praise than by too much. Sometimes I think Catholics are almost ashamed of Our Lady in the modern age.
The Virgin kneels at the foot of the cross and calls us to the true redeemer.
True, but there is no shame in kneeling before Our Lady in honor of the Mother of Our Lord. It doesn’t denigrate Jesus to highly honor His Mother.

👍 I get a bit tired of the pious hand-wringing and moaning about how our Blessed Mother would cry at the supposed over-statements of her privileges as the Mother of God. True piety doesn’t shy away from her glories.

No, it is has certainly not been declared an official Doctrine of The Holy Catholic Church.

Please join me in making petition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for the suppression of the problematic title of co-redemptrix which causes so much confusion and is the cause that many are turned away from her Sons Holy Church.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Intercede for us Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God that we will do everything to bring our seperated brothers and sisters into The Holy Catholic Church and eleminate anything which keeps them from her.

Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, that we Thy Servants may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body and by the glorious intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, be delivered from present sorrow and unjoy enternal happiness. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Firstly I want to make it clear that I am not asking whether or not it is a dogma that Our Lady is Co redemptrix: I know that it is not yet dogmatically defined. However, there is much speculation that it will eventually be, and there are also an abundance of errors regarding the title and its meaning.

Numerous liberals and conservatives / traditionalists promote the dogmatic definition of the title. On the one hand, which concerns me, the liberals make this title mean something which is entirely incorrect, and even heresy - namely; that Mary is also a redeemer with Christ, that Mary is equal to Christ etc. If they do not admit this they teach it at least implicitly. This is clearly contrary to Catholic teaching, but more and more mainstream Catholics have mentioned the title “co-redemptrix” to me recently and when I asked them what it meant, they give erroneous answers, like the above, and even told me that their priests and people who lead Bible study groups in the chapel taught them this. I would look at this as a one off liberal priest /instructor only more and more people seem to be thinking this way, which is dangerous. It leads people to believe in heretical doctrines which Our Lady would not want, and for protestants to see justification in their accusations that we Catholics put Mary on the same level as Christ, which we know is absurd.

But no, the Church teaches infallibly that there is one mediator, and one redeemer: Jesus Christ. Our Lady’s role is one of intercession and co-operation. Thus if the title is legitimate it would have to be understood along these lines. That our Lady co-operates in the work of redemption and that many have been saved due to her intercession, there can be no question.

I have done considerable research and study on Catholic teachings and dogmas, but I admit that I haven’t studied the appropriateness of this particular title and its meaning that much. Does anyone know of any Papal allocutions or even addresses etc which support the use of this title before the 1800’s , or the writings of the Saints and Doctors of the Church in this regard.? I think that whatever happens, this will have to be defined soon, simply because there is so much error circulating which leads people to the wrong conclusion at both ends of the spectrum.
what many people do not realize is that “Co-Redemptrix” is Latin, not English, and it translates to English as “Woman with the Redeemer”, not “Co-Redemptress”.

Pope Benedict commented on the title… he said that nothing is wrong with the theology (and it does not mean that Mary is another redeemer, it actually goes together with the teaching that Jesus is the Redeemer, though like I said many aren’t aware of this) - but that other titles are more suitable, since this one is likely to confuse people (as we see it doing :))

God bless

No, it is certainly not a Doctrine of The Catholic Church.
Readers can see from this projection of personal prejudice, feelings, desires and wishes, without ever one iota of substance, of fact against the Church’s doctrine, that piety is no substitute for fidelity.

From Ott’s *Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma *(A One-Volume Encyclopedia of the Doctrines of the Catholic Church, showing their sources in Scripture and Tradition and their definitions by Popes and Councils),

Mary’s Co-operation in the Work of Redemption
“The title Corredemptrix=Coredemptress, which has been current since the fifteenth century, and which also appears in some official Church documents under Pius X (cf. D 1978a), must not be conceived in the sense of an equation of the efficacy of Mary with the redemptive activity of Christ, the Sole Redeemer of humanity (1 Tim 2.5). As she herself required redemption and in fact was redeemed by Christ, she could not of herself merit the grace of the redemption of humanity in accordance with the principle: Principium meriti non cadit sub eodem merito. (The author of an act of merit cannot be a recipient of the same act of merit.) Her co-operation in the objective redemption is an indirect, remote co-operation, and derives from this that she voluntarily devoted her whole life to the service of the Redeemer, and under the Cross, suffered and sacrificed with Him. As Pope Pius XII says in the Encyclical ‘Mystici Corporis’ (1943), she ‘offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father together with the holocaust of her maternal rights and her motherly love like a new Eve for all children of Adam’ (D 2291). As ‘The New Eve’ she is, as the same Pope declares, in the Apostolic Constitution ‘Munificentissimus Deus’ (1950) ‘the sublime associate of our Redeemer’ (alma Redemptoris nostri social (cf. Gen 3.12). Cf. D. 3031: generoso Divini Redemptoris social.

“Christ alone truly offered the sacrifice of atonement on the Cross; Mary merely gave Him moral support in this action. Thus Mary is not entitled to the title ‘Priest’ (sacerdos). Indeed this is expressly laid down by the Holy Office (1916, 1927). Christ, as the Church teaches, ‘conquered the enemy of the human race alone (solus)’ (D 711); in the same way, He alone acquired the grace of Redemption for the whole human race, including Mary. The words of Luke I, 38: ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord,’ imply Mary’s mediate, remote co-operation in the Redemption. St. Ambrose expressly teaches: ‘Christ’s Passion did not require any support’ (De inst. Virg. 7). In the power of the grace of Redemption merited by Christ, Mary, by her spiritual entering into the sacrifice of her Divine Son for men, made atonement for the sins of men, and (de congruo) merited the application of the redemptive grace of Christ. In this manner she co-operates in the subjective redemption of mankind.

“The statement of Pope Pius X in the Encyclical Ad diem illum (1904): (Beata Virgo) de congruo, ut aiunt, promeret nobis, quae Christus de condign promeruit (D 1978a) (The Blessed Virgin merits for us de congruo what Christ merited de condign) is, as the present tense ‘promeret’ shows, not intended to be taken as referring to the historical objective Redemption, which occurred once and for all, but to her ever-present, intercessory co-operation in the subjective redemption.”

In Denzinger quote (D 1978a) from his *The Sources of Catholic Dogma * Ott explains:
“In the decree of the S.C. of the Holy Office (section on Indulgences), “Sunt quos amor,” June 26, 1913 (AAS 5 [1913] 364), he [Pius XI] praises the custom of adding to the name of Jesus the name of “His Mother, our coredemptor, the blessed Mary”; cf. also the prayer enriched by the Holy Office with an indulgence, in which the Blessed Virgin Mary is called “coredemptress of the human race” (Jan. 22, 1914; AAS 6 [1914] 108).”

The doctrine of Mary’s coredemption is actually quite Biblical, and can definitely be found in the Fathers and the Magisterium.

The title of “Co-redemptrix” applied to Mary is a doctrine of the Church.

No, it is has certainly not been declared an official Doctrine of The Holy Catholic Church.
Again, you are presenting a false witness. This doctrine is held definitely and infallibly by the bishops in union with the pope (cf Inter soldalica, AAS 1918, 181.) It is the constant teaching of our Faith. It is expressed through the ordinary and universal teaching authority. Your public denial of this doctrine constitutes dissent against the Magisterium.

Therefore I implore you to re-think your position and recant your statements. Peace.

Please join me in making petition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for the suppression of the problematic title of co-redemptrix which causes so much confusion and is the cause that many are turned away from her Sons Holy Church.
This is absurd. Do you really think that Protestants will turn away from the Church because of the title Co-Redmptrix (properly understood) but won’t turn away from the Church because of the title “Mother of God?” I was once a Protestant, I know how many ways the true doctrine of the Church is twisted into a straw man to attack. We often talked about the “Mother of God” title and how “offensive” it was to God. Or perhaps we should draw back from this title and other titles of Our Blessed Mother? – because they, also, can subject to misunderstanding? Where does this stop?

I don’t think this particular compromise is driven by a search for truth – I think it arises from a desire to “smooth over” differences between Catholics and Protestants. And guess who always has to compromise their beliefs and doctrines in this “smoothing over” process? You’ve got it, the One, True, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Truth is truth, Co-Redemtrix, properly understood (which it would be if it was dogmatically defined), is truth. Period.

Co-Redemtrix, properly understood (which it would be if it was dogmatically defined).
There is a reason that it is not, and cannot be, dogmatically defined by The Catholic Church.

One of the major problems is the English translation into co-redemptrix is a mistranslation and implies a concept in conflict with Catholic Teaching

I’m going to have to go along with The Holy Father, who clearly recognizes the problematic nature of the term co-redemptrix, there are much more suitable titles.

Let us continue to pray for the intercession of Our Lady that this term be completely cleansed from the Catholic vocabulary.

Let us refrain from the inaccurate translation which not only can, but has proven that it is more likely than not to cause confusion!

I don’t know how long you were a protestant or how committed you were to your faith. Maybe it was a while back. You know how after a few years the memory of the pains of labor and delivery fade?

Well take it from someone who is at the very beginning of her Catholic journey… I can more stomach Mother of God than Co-Redemptrix. Mother of God makes me a tiny bit uncomfortable, but I see the logic since Jesus was God.

Co-Redemptrix strikes fear in my heart. Fear of a dilution of the completion and efficacy of Jesus’ sacrifice and salvation plan.
There is a reason that it is not, and cannot be, dogmatically defined by The Catholic Church.

Let us continue to pray for the intercession of Our Lady that this term be completely cleansed from the Catholic vocabulary.
Amen, my brother.

apologies for when I use the words Dogma and Doctrines occasionally in error its probable a confusion caused by reading too many of Abu’s posts where the words often to the less learned like me appeared to be interchangeable. 😃

Roman Catholic Doctrine Vs. The Doctrinal Teaching of the Word of God

Eternal life is a merited reward [1821, 2010]. - Roman Catholicism
Eternal life is the free gift of God (Romans 6:23)

No one can know if he will attain eternal life [1036, 2005] - Roman Catholicism
The believer can know that he has eternal life by the Word of God (1 John 5:13)

The Roman Catholic Church is necessary for salvation [846]. - Roman Catholicism
There is salvation in no one but the Lord Jesus Christ, “for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12)

Purgatory is necessary to atone for sin and clean the soul [1030-1031]. - Roman Catholicism
Purgatory does not exist. Jesus made purification for sins on the cross (Hebrews 1:3)

Mary was preserved from all stain of original sin from the first instant of her conception (the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception) [490-492].
Mary, a descendant of Adam, was born in sin (Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:12)

Mary is the Mother of the Church [963, 975]. - Roman Catholicism
Mary was the earthly mother of Jesus ( John 2:1)

The Magisterium is the authoritative teacher of the Church. [85-87]. - Roman Catholicism
The Holy Spirit is the authoritative teacher of the church (John 14:26; John 16:13, I John 2:27)

The pope, as the Bishop of Rome, is the successor of Peter [882, 936] - Roman Catholicism
Peter had no successor, nor was he a pope.

The pope is infallible in his authoritative teaching [891]. - Roman Catholicism
God alone is infallible (Numbers 23:19)

Scripture and Tradition together are the Word of God [81, 85, 97, 182]. - Roman Catholicism
Scripture is the Word of God (John 10:35, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21). Tradition is the words of men (Mark 7:1-13).

The sacrificial work of redemption is continually carried out through the Sacrifice of the Mass. [1364,1405, 1846]. - Roman Catholicism
The sacrificial work of redemption was finished when Christ gave His life for us on the cross (Ephesians 1:7, Hebrews 1:3).

God desires that consecrated bread and wine be worshiped as divine. [1378-1381] - Roman Catholicism
God forbids the worship of any object, even t hose intended to represent Him (Exodus 20:4-5, Isaiah 42:8)

Justification is lost through mortal sin [1033, 1855, 1874] - Roman Catholicism
Justification cannot be lost. Those whom God justifies will be saved from the wrath of God (Romans 5:8-9).

Justification is furthered by sacraments and good works [1212, 1392, 2010] - Roman Catholicism
Justification is the imputation of the perfect righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). In Christ the believer has been made complete (Colossians 2:10).

Salvation is attained by cooperating with grace through faith, good works, and participation in the sacraments [183, 1129, 1815, 2002]. - Roman Catholicism

No one has the right to go beyond what is written in Scripture (1 Corinthians 4:6, Proverbs 30:5-6).

Scripture and Tradition together are the Church’s supreme role of faith [80, 82]. - Roman Catholicism
Scripture is the church’s rule of faith (Mark 7:7-13, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Amen, my brother.
