The worst part of all is the fact that people take what celebrities say as the gospel truth. Look at Madonna and Tom Cruise, and all the celebrities that speak for the Democratic party. The average Joe cant seem to discern that they are using their status and celebrity to promote their views, no matter how much actual knowledge they have of a certain subject, i.e. abortion. However, if Bishop Wuerl ( Pittsburgh bishop) comes on his Sunday morning show and tells viewers how grave abortion or euthanasia is, angry viewers write to the paper and tell how the Church is wrong on almost everything, including abortion, birth control, and homosexual practices.

That is the problem with our society. We have been given every freedom known to man, but no real ability, for some people, to have the common sense to tell right from wrong. And those people get mad and spiteful when the Church tells them no and it is a sin. The people then say “Well, I can do what I want and I believe it isn’t a sin, yet I will still go take communion, and blah blah blah, and I will speak out against the Church”.

It is all about the irresponsible use (read: abuse) of freedom.

Actually, we are not supposed to judge each other and I think that most Catholics who attend Church are serious about what they think is a sin and what isn’t.
John Stewart is a hilarious comedian. If he makes jokes about the Pope I am sure that the Pope doesn’t lose sleep over it and I wouldn’t waste my time or my energy feeling persecuted by some words from a comedian! That’s just a big case of self pity.

I would hardly call his statements about the Pope silly. More an act of hate than any thing. To say its simply comedy is sophistry.

You actually think Jon Stewart hates the Holy Father?

Come on, now… I think Jon Stewart is a little above that. You may not appreciate his jokes (you’re perfectly fine to do so), but Stewart is not a vindictive man… he is a comedian! I guess the proper term for these jokes at the Holy Father could be… a roast?

A roast is appreciated by the one being roasted. It is an honor and the roastee has agreed to be made fun of, all in good fun. Roasts are always a good thing due to the honor and meaning behind it.

Last time I checked, the Holy Father was not frequenting the Daily Show or any other comedic event, and I am guessing he is unaware of Jon Stewart making these rude remarks. So the proper term is not a roast.

Ok… maybe not a roast.

The point I tried to make was that Jon Stewart probably does not hate the Holy Father, and any humor he would direct towards the Pope would not be out of spite.

It’s just dirty American humor.

I saw the daily show last night… why does Jon Stewart have to scream some words and act like crazy? but also probably, he never meant to make a joke about the pope. but we should tell him to lessen these religious jokes thing as many would get offended. 😦

I would assume he screams some words because it makes people laugh.

Actually I find some of the religious stuff to be quite funny… when he makes fun of the Pope or Catholicism, it’s usually stuff like, he’s old, or the one I found the funniest was when they showed the grand prix guys or whatever presenting a model of a racecar to John Paul II, and the caption and commentary said that the Pope was deciding on upgrading the pope mobile. 😃

However when he makes fun of other religions like the Anglicans or atheism even, they really poke a lot of holes! For example:

“The Anglican Church faces schism over the issue or gay marriage, its opposition saying it is necessary for the protection of the sanctity of marriage… a fine line coming from the Anglicans who originally split from the Catholic Church so Henry VIII could get a divorce…” :o

If we get some more of that I guess a few lite Catholic jokes are a small price to pay :yup:

The point is that he is a satirist. Satirists make fun of everyone. It’s like The Simpsons. (hmm, maybe something to do with the name Simpson 🙂

I find the Daily Show hilarious most of the time. To my delight, they have started showing it here in the UK 🙂

Because those when he is failing to be funny with the words he must resort to visual/physical humor. Like I said before, he is not that funny and often has to use these tactics.

I just read a story about comedian and commentator Jon Stewart doing a show at the Foxwoods Resort Casino this weekend.
Do you have an actual link to the story?

P.S., the man is really funny.

If you decide to do a write in campaign I’ll have to write in with the exact opposite view that you express, I don’t mind his jokes, after all the early Christians endured far worse than a few mild pokes at their sacred cows. This campaign against John Stewart is suspiciously mired in anti-Jewish sentiment and I’m DARNED sure that I want NO part in that, except to speak against it!

Wondering Waif:
. This campaign against John Stewart is suspiciously mired in anti-Jewish sentiment…!
On what do you base this accusation? Because a person is jewish (which I was unaware he was) does not make one immune to criticism or any criticism against him anti-semetic.

Gah. No. Wandering Waif is being ironic and turning the argument around to show that the first argument doesn’t hold water.

Really?? I must have missed that entirely, but then sarcasm seldom comes across in posts without the little smiley thing to give a clue (and it is only his 4th post).

It could be I have no sense of humor though, as evidenced by my lack of appreciation for the comical genius that is Jon Stewart.

Of course I never joke and am always serious in my posting.

I do not agree. I for one do not appreciate that kind of sense of humor which I find to be immoderate and morally irresponsible. To say that “Pope Benedict is the closest thing to the kkk” and say he’s being satirical is not humor.

So far, we have no evidence that he said this. I think it’s unlikely that he really said that. Maybe he was misquoted.

Actually, there’s a difference between anti-semitic and anti-Jewish. Thank you for your support.

I’m sure that he was misquoted. Where’s the transcript? Anyone know? If it can’t be reproduced I wonder if he could sue the poster for damages. Wouldn’t that be libel?

I know Steve Colbert’s brother. I’ll ask him if John actually said what you declared.
