I would hardly call his statements about the Pope silly. More an act of hate than any thing. To say its simply comedy is sophistry.
Define sophistry!

sophistry actually comes from a greek word which means people who claim to have wisdom, when they use devious reasoning.

Oh, I see, so your reasoning was subjective, that’s okay, but it’s not compelling.

Wondering Waif:
Actually, there’s a difference between anti-semitic and anti-Jewish. Thank you for your support.
But I guess we’re both if we dare not find Jon Stewart funny? You’ve got to be kidding. No, really. You’re kidding right?
Because throwing around charges of racism is not very nice and is actually a very serious accusation.

You’re perfectly fine to think that way, but it’s humor… it’s not like Jon Stewart personally has something against the late Holy Father. I’m sure Stewart has said something that even John Paul himself laughed at (if he watched the show at all). You don’t have to like something to think it’s funny.

Hey, if there was no class clown (or troublemaker to be more broad) in your classes, don’t you think it would have become bored and repetitive after a while going to class and seeing nothing new happen? I know I get annoyed when the class clowns and such interrupt my classes, but I also think about what those classes would be like without them. Very boring.

Since I put it that way, one could say that Jon Stewart makes the news industry interesting when he crosses the line and insults authority. People enjoy controversy… without it, we would all be bored to tears.
Getting cheap laughs at the expense of an elderly person in poor health isn’t funny in the least. It doesn’t matter if the subject is His Holiness or the little old lady next door to me who hobbles to the bus stop with a cane. It has nothing to do with thumbing one’s nose at authority - it’s mean-spirited, childish, and utterly disrespectful.

As for class clowns - and yes, they are usually the troublemakers - you might want to think about all the interesting discussions that your teacher might have time to foster among the halfway serious students if he or she didn’t have to waste so much class time trying to keep them quiet for five minutes.

Stellina, what you said deserves a standing ovation. Bravo.

Alot of the stand-up comics take shots at the Church and their stands in terms of morality. Two recent reviews of female comics come to mind: Margaret Cho and Sarah Silverman. The liberal critics called their shows “edgy” and “pushing the limits” but I call them mean-spirited and infused with the secular anti-christian agenda.

Still no one has offered any evidence that Jon Stewart ever said the things the OP claims he did.

This is kinda off topic, but the teachers with something to say usually also have the ability to shut all of the bad kids up. That’s what makes them worth listening to. Unfortunately, there are none in my school, so I basically do the homework, ace the tests, and learn the stuff out of the book.

Oh, and another thing: it’s “mean-spirited, childish, and utterly disrespectful”… to those who really find it offensive. Has the Holy Father (who probably hasn’t watched the show) come out with a statement condemning Jon Stewart? You people may be making a bigger deal out of this than he would. We don’t know what his reaction would be. Maybe he would joke back… 😉

Joke back? I doubt it. Making fun of old people is ok? Not on my watch it isn’t. Using humor like comparing a good man to kkk is not humor. Apparently, you and I have a different idea of humor.

I believe everyone needs some daily humor…that’s why I start my day with the comic section of the newspaper. Political junkies can be amused by reading Mallard Fillmore. (if your newspaper does not carry it you can get it off the web) My other must read comic is “For Better or Worse”. If you like the “pretend” tv talk shows you might try the new show on the comedy channel…Cobert Report. I have watched it a few times and found it hilariousl! He likes to do take-offs on the Roger Moore style of interviewing. He will “cut and paste” and everyone knows it is fake so nobody is hurt. So far he has been funny without being anti-Catholic. :tiphat:

I guess you didn’t see his interview of the Alliance 8 representative (a group that opposes gay marriage) - he made fun of him unceasingly by editing the interview and twisting the words and answers to make him look like a homophobe and bigot. This sort of “comic” interview fits right into the liberal secular agenda.

I am not familiar with that particular show. I will modify my recommendation. The satire that I saw on the three shows that I viewed was very obvious. In fact, he was making fun of liberals on the shows that I saw. I think Chesterson would approve of the satire. Maybe it should only be recommended for adults over 17.

Well, if you guess that you are both that is your issue and it’s very serious. I’ll pray for you.

Now, just how many people are you? Or are you using the royal “we” in reference to yourself?
Now THAT would be funny!

I can see you’re really driving that point through all of your opponents, so I will just make one statement (it’s really two sentences): If you find it offensive, don’t watch it. But don’t deny others the right to view it.

Most of us who find it funny also know that it is not out of spite or hate and have a dear respect for the Holy Father. My teenage mind may not be strong enough to understand what an adult calls “respect”, but whatever it is, it must be quite stiff. I may not laugh as hard at Jon Stewart’s anti-Catholic jokes, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that the irony in them forces at least a chuckle from even the stiffest of critics.

We need to stop screening people because of what they say. In this world, if you did such a thing, you would have quite “slim pickins” on what would be appropriate for your ears.

Screening people for what they say? It’s about setting a good Christian example. Padre Pio actually said that the guy who invented the TV went to Hell.

Are you serious? Are you sure that Padre Pio actually said that? Because if he did say that I can no longer believe that Padre Pio was a holy man, and I am was very devoted to him.

If it is true that he said this I guess it’s a good thing that you’ve enlightened me, but if you have the slightest doubt or you were just kidding around I would appreciate it if you would post again and let me know?

It is well documented in Ruffin’s book that he did. And no I wasn’t kidding. He even encouraged kids not to watch TV.

The fact that TV and the modern “entertainment” business has very little of anything virtuous is lost on many I’m afraid. 😦
