I wrote a whole big thing about how people who do southern American accents in films tend to be terrible at it. And my finger slipped and it was deleted.

Why do I have a bruise on my arm? Why am I too much of a coward to tell a woman I have a crush on her? Why can the only thing I can remember from a Baptist Sunday school is God’s covenant with Noah? (To be fair, I barely remember the preaching during the service, why can’t I remember most of that?) Why do people actually like iced coffee? Why is it so hard to get a job? Why do I get zits under my hair? Why do people tell me to shave my moustache ?(NO)

Reminds me of a song:

Why am I soft in the middle now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
When the rest of my life is so hard!
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don’t want to end up a cartoon

You know, I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore.

I wasn’t even thinking about that. I was thinking about Nicholas Cage pretending to have a southern accent. But you’re not wrong. To be far, there are some (very few) none southern actors that have fairly good southern accents. They’re far and few between.

Al Pacino’s accent in Scent of a Woman was so bad, I don’t even know where he was supposed to be from. Still, I love that movie.

There is one actor that can do a very good southern accent (though I am not a fan of him) Daniel Lawrence Whitney (Larry The Cable Guy). Not bad for a guy from Nebraska.
John Goodman can do a pretty good one, too (though it still has issues).

I did not know Larry the Cable guy isn’t Southern!

I don’t care for John Goodman’s southern. Can’t put my finger on it, just off.

I am complaining about actors doing terrible New York accents. Especially trying to say fuhgedabboudit!

You know the whole reason I mentioned it, is because I was actually watching Blues Brother, and I noticed than Dan Aykroyd has a very good Chicago accent. (I have lived in the midwest and have been to Chicago many times). Maybe some Canadian accents just sound Chicagoan.

It’s pretty good; a little too heavy at times. I never knew I had a Chicago accent till I moved to Knoxville. Got the “you’re not from round here, are ya”.

I used to live in Davenport, Iowa and have also lived in Illinois nearby. In Davenport, they have a “general American accent”. Since I have always been around southerners, I have a mixed General American/Deep south accent. The Chicago accent is definitely distinct. Nothing wrong with it, though. Knoxville accents are a whole 'nother level of southern

One time in Miami, a woman asked me where I was from. She thought my accent was foreign. 😳

My sisters ex boyfriend grew up in Miami (though he was born in Cuba). They got their own accent down there because a lot of them are foreign born. So, it could be, to her, you are foreign.

I can complain about a lot of things. I think that people on this forum can often not be very kind. Many do not act as good Christians, and I can guarantee that 95% of what is said on this forum would not be said face to face. There are nice people on this forum but I often find this hard to see.

Everyone on casual discussion is very nice, however 😃.

See, I actually would say something to someone’s face, as my first reaction is often overreaction. Stick around, we like to keep it laid back, here. (I hope)

I did after about a year there ( I’ve since moved back to the Midwest). I got the “Bless his heart” more than a few times.😂

That’s what I suspected. Miami has quite a unique culture due to the very large Hispanic population. Thankfully, though, you don’t need to know Spanish to get around it, and since I don’t look Latin American, most just default to English for me anyways. I have had cases, though, where someone switched to Spanish because I looked confused by what they said in English. They assumed it was me not understanding English rather than me processing what they said.

A lot of Brazilians down there, too (Who do you think are buying the abandoned condos and what not)?. Not to mention Haitians. I think English is kind of the common language because of that. I’ve never actually been to Miami, but know some people from there (I have been to Florida many, many times, I like the panhandle the most)
