Then most southern states should change their state flags because most have symbols/imagery of the Confederate flag. That isn’t going to happpen, BTW.
Apparently, the CSA flag is over the Confederate burial grounds, which is in front of the Legislature. And it’s there by state law. In order for the flag to be removed, the SC legislature actually has to repeal the law mandating it to be there! The independence to own slaves.
I’m not familiar with the rules in South Carolina, but I’m surprised that the governor needs the state legislature’s approval to remove the confederate flag. It’s not the official state flag, it was hoisted during the Civil Rights era of the 1960s.
If it’s on state grounds, presumably the governor has the authority to pull it down, just as she would have the authority to tell the S.C. Division of General Services to cut down a tree, order the repaving of a parking lot, replace the light bulbs, etc.
If I were the governor I’d have it removed and not ask for political permission. If they don’'t like it, let 'em impeach me.
Yes a True,. New Zealand is Missing the Federation Star,I agree with you about Canada
I also like how their Government signs show the name “Canada” with the flag flying off the “d”. Nice and upbeat. Obviously Canucks haven’t yet learnt negative vibes about government.
I agree that the AU flag is special, but either you guys or NZ will one day have to change, as the flags are almost the same

The American Flag represents the country we live in…with all of its positives and its negative baggage. I would hope people would admit that while we started off with not all people being equal, we certainly have made great strides in our history to remedy past failings. What would you say if American Indians started a protest about the American flag? That every time they saw the flag, they were reminded of the atrocities and crimes committed upon them. What if they demanded that the US remove the flag from public display? Would you support this? Why? Why not?
To see the war as being only about that is being myopic. The Union didn’t fight to free slaves as explicitly stated by its president and testified to by the fact there were Union slave states.Wrong. To blame it on anything else is to romanticize the Imsurgency but we’ll never agree on this, I can see.
I prefer my own version. An interesting fact that ties into this is the last Confederate general to surrender was the Cherokee Indian Stand Watie. Some indians fought for the Confederacy. They already knew what the Union was capable of. They got a bigger taste of it after Sherman, who perfected his techniques on the South, was unleashed on the Indians in the West.

DITTO. Revisionism doesn’t help anything. The point is that the CSA flag is used by white supremacist hate groups and has been for more than a century.I prefer my own version.
You can look through the books about the Nazis and find that there were some reasonable planks to their platform, at least in the beginning. Healthful living, exercise, diet& nutrition, aspirations to form a great nation, unity, purpose, etc.DITTO. Revisionism doesn’t help anything. I would say it is a vastly different thing. Most folks would probably agree that the confederate flag symbolizes (among potentially other things) slavery. And, out of respect and love for our black brothers and sisters, I think most folks would also support the movement to remove this flag from public display such as at the South Carolina state capitol.

From this link:Wal-Mart, eBay, Target, and Amazon are pulling stock with Confederate flags on them. They’re only going to heighten the flag’s fascination. It will become, more than ever, a symbol of defiance and rebellion. The smaller retailers are going to have a field day, though.
When I see a confederate flag I tend to see it alongside of the Japanese flag of the rising sun and the German battle flag (swastika). Three great losers. Most folks would probably agree that the confederate flag symbolizes (among potentially other things) slavery. Probably not, as there were and are many distinct Indian nations.I’m Australian, from the UK originally. I’m a little ambivalent about the Union flag in the corner. It represents so much history it would be a shame to have it removed. But I’m definately a Republican. The sooner we lose the Queen as head of state the better.
Don’t know if anyone realises, but we also have an offical Aboriginal flag which is flown on all government buildings. Any chance of the same in the U.S.?
What’s wrong with the Queen? It’s the Governor General you probably should be angry with. Or the Prime Minister who is elected. Our President is head of state AND government. HMQE2 is head of State, as you say. Hey God save the Queen.I’m Australian, from the UK originally. I’m a little ambivalent about the Union flag in the corner. There’s no need because the U.S. flag represents everyone.Don’t know if anyone realises, but we also have an offical Aboriginal flag which is flown on all government buildings. Any chance of the same in the U.S.?
