Then most southern states should change their state flags because most have symbols/imagery of the Confederate flag. That isn’t going to happpen, BTW.

The independence to own slaves.

I’m not familiar with the rules in South Carolina, but I’m surprised that the governor needs the state legislature’s approval to remove the confederate flag. It’s not the official state flag, it was hoisted during the Civil Rights era of the 1960s.

If it’s on state grounds, presumably the governor has the authority to pull it down, just as she would have the authority to tell the S.C. Division of General Services to cut down a tree, order the repaving of a parking lot, replace the light bulbs, etc.

If I were the governor I’d have it removed and not ask for political permission. If they don’'t like it, let 'em impeach me.
Apparently, the CSA flag is over the Confederate burial grounds, which is in front of the Legislature. And it’s there by state law. In order for the flag to be removed, the SC legislature actually has to repeal the law mandating it to be there!

I wouldn’t mind if they did away with it for all of the reasons mentioned above. But it does represent our history and history is often ugly. Trying to hide it seems kind of silly if you think about it. Germany did this with the Nazi’s and now look at them.

Wal-Mart, eBay, Target, and Amazon are pulling stock with Confederate flags on them. They’re only going to heighten the flag’s fascination. It will become, more than ever, a symbol of defiance and rebellion. The smaller retailers are going to have a field day, though.

Idk. I just see it as a heritage thing. It is in some cemeteries and on some headstones of Confederate veterans. My grandmother is president of a historical cemetery and on Veteran’s Day, those who fought for the Confederacy get a confederate flag on their grave. And those who fought for Texas’ Independence get a Texas flag.

I had a couple of Dixie Outfitters shirts in high school. One was about softball and the other one had 2 hunting dogs on it. I had black friends who wore the shirts too. But you had those rednecks who “went all out” they kept to themselves, though and even had dixie horns on their trucks.
Some people take it way too far and use it has a symbol for hate and others just think of it as part of our history and heritage.
My aunt has traced one side of my family’s ancestry back to the 15th century and of course came across stuff about the Confederacy. I am eligible to join the Daughters of thr Confederacy and I have been thinking about it and have even looked on their website, they do a lot of patriotic philanthropy…not harp about how the “south will rise again!” Lol.

I agree with you about Canada 🙂

I also like how their Government signs show the name “Canada” with the flag flying off the “d”. Nice and upbeat. Obviously Canucks haven’t yet learnt negative vibes about government.

I agree that the AU flag is special, but either you guys or NZ will one day have to change, as the flags are almost the same :)🙂

Yes a True,. New Zealand is Missing the Federation Star,
They are starting to seriously talk about Change,

I’m Australian, from the UK originally. I’m a little ambivalent about the Union flag in the corner. It represents so much history it would be a shame to have it removed. But I’m definately a Republican. The sooner we lose the Queen as head of state the better.

Don’t know if anyone realises, but we also have an offical Aboriginal flag which is flown on all government buildings. Any chance of the same in the U.S.?

What would you say if American Indians started a protest about the American flag? That every time they saw the flag, they were reminded of the atrocities and crimes committed upon them. What if they demanded that the US remove the flag from public display? Would you support this? Why? Why not?
The American Flag represents the country we live in…with all of its positives and its negative baggage. I would hope people would admit that while we started off with not all people being equal, we certainly have made great strides in our history to remedy past failings.

Regarding American Indians. I guess it depends on which tribes you are talking about…prior to the US government taking lands from Indian tribes, many of those same tribes took other Indian tribes lands (and didn’t ask nicely for it either). Thats not to excuse US gov’t behavior and the atrocities committed, but at some point, we have to move on and play the hand we are dealt today.

An interesting fact that ties into this is the last Confederate general to surrender was the Cherokee Indian Stand Watie. Some indians fought for the Confederacy. They already knew what the Union was capable of. They got a bigger taste of it after Sherman, who perfected his techniques on the South, was unleashed on the Indians in the West.
Wrong. To blame it on anything else is to romanticize the Imsurgency but we’ll never agree on this, I can see.
To see the war as being only about that is being myopic. The Union didn’t fight to free slaves as explicitly stated by its president and testified to by the fact there were Union slave states.

I prefer my own version.

DITTO. Revisionism doesn’t help anything. The point is that the CSA flag is used by white supremacist hate groups and has been for more than a century.
You can look through the books about the Nazis and find that there were some reasonable planks to their platform, at least in the beginning. Healthful living, exercise, diet& nutrition, aspirations to form a great nation, unity, purpose, etc.

But you wouldn’t hoist a Nazi flag based on those planks.

Most folks would probably agree that the confederate flag symbolizes (among potentially other things) slavery. And, out of respect and love for our black brothers and sisters, I think most folks would also support the movement to remove this flag from public display such as at the South Carolina state capitol.

I would say it is a vastly different thing.
  1. The American flag is currently the symbol of a sovereign nation.
  2. It has never been used as a symbol for the purpose of torturing and killing Indians.
  3. No such protest or movement exists. The initial “if” is rather unlikely.

From this link:

SEATTLE - *In a marketing move that will shock no one, Amazon removed the Confederate flag after a howling mob of both liberals and brown-nosing conservatives demanded the “symbol of hate” be stricken from its shelves. *

But Commie comrades can rest easy, knowing that they’ll have plenty of opportunities to stock up on Communist merchandise after their latest purge. Amazon will still stock over 50 Thousand Communist items. Communism is chic: Amazon’s senior vice president Jay Carney proudly features Soviet Union war propaganda in his lavish home, after all. “Have you enlisted in the army?” a poster featured by The Washingtonian Magazine photo splash asks.

Helpful reminder — Communism led to the deaths of 94 million people world-wide within the last century.

I believe I heard something today about Alabama doing something too concerning the CSA’s flag.

When I see a confederate flag I tend to see it alongside of the Japanese flag of the rising sun and the German battle flag (swastika). Three great losers.

I would not support an Indian uprising against the American Flag because no true American would do such a thing.

John Wayne once said,“Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. I’m not ashamed of that, never have been and never will be.”

Probably not, as there were and are many distinct Indian nations.

What’s wrong with the Queen? It’s the Governor General you probably should be angry with. Or the Prime Minister who is elected. Our President is head of state AND government. HMQE2 is head of State, as you say. Hey God save the Queen. 😉

There’s no need because the U.S. flag represents everyone.

I bet most commenting here have never seen a CSA flag in person except via media. I grew up and live in the South. Much ado about nothing, in fact I note the CSA is flown/posted in other regions as well - All are entitled to their views but this “My view trumps yours because I’m mad, perplexed, sad, victimized, afraid, smart, verklempt etc etc (pick one)” is absurd. Where will this stupidity end? When we all hide in boxes for fear of offending for any perceived slight? Worry more about being embarrassed to make the sign of the cross in public.
