This major Mormon doctrinal position, I think, outweighs one night’s social gathering by the Cardinal. And the other candidate’s faith teaches that the Catholic Church’s priesthood, and it’s entire hierarchy, is invalid since the great apostasy of around 2000 years ago.
Human Life International (HLI) President Father Shenan J. Boquet released the following statement today in response to news that President Obama was extended an invitation to the Al Smith dinner and fundraiser for Catholic charitable institutions taking place in New York on October 18, 2012:
“As faithful Catholics, we cannot set aside our deeply-held differences and put in any place of honor those who continuously attack the tenants of our faith, and even our very ability to practice that faith. We cannot pretend for one moment that such an honor at any function promoting the work of the Church doesn’t give legitimacy to their position while harming the Catholic Church’s image and the perceptions of those looking for guidance from our bishops and Church leaders.
hli.org/index.php/news/press-releases/1088-hli-president-responds-to-invitation-of-president-obama-to-al-smith-dinner“The Catholic Church in the United States is facing greater persecution from our government than at any time in recent history. Political figures who actively seek to undermine the Catholic Church, especially in her work to protect life, promote family values, and to freely live our faith, should not be afforded a public platform by Catholic organizations, foundations, charities, events, etc., even if that’s not the intention. The need to show unwavering commitment to the Church’s teaching is greatly needed and must be safeguarded so as not to cause confusion, a potential scandal, or give any semblance of support or endorsement.”
I would agree, but still would not question the Cardinal over his decision…This major Mormon doctrinal position, I think, outweighs one night’s social gathering by the Cardinal.
I don’t question the Cardinal’s decision at all.I would agree, but still would not question the Cardinal over his decision…
Anyone can file lawsuits.25 lawsuits say you are wrong
A lot of people will be affected when Catholic Charities closes down. The HHS mandate argument is overblown, when it comes to persecution of the Church.
Jim
I realize that Rich.I don’t question the Cardinal’s decision at all.
The costs of those lawsuits above the filing fees is another issue still.Anyone can file lawsuits.
Winning them is another issue.
Jim
They won’t close down because of the mandate.A lot of people will be affected when Catholic Charities closes down.
Yes, but what does that matter to the self-righteous who have made their point if the Cardinal disinvites Obama and Romney?A lot of people will be affected when Catholic Charities closes down.
This is an unbelievable statement, one that our own Church leaders vehemently disagree with. The HHS mandate argument is overblown, when it comes to persecution of the Church.
Jim
Maybe Rick Santorum has a big role and will get all the diehard Catholics going.
I’ve already asked you once to please stop this. I will ask you again, please stop. Those of us who want a disinvitation will not be satisfied with simply that, and of course it matters to us if Catholic Charities shuts down!!! That’s the whole point is to strengthen the Churches opposition to such measures, make a statement to unify the laity against the policy, and be able to fight this thing.Yes, but what does that matter to the self-righteous who have made their point if the Cardinal disinvites Obama and Romney?
You don’t have the Federal HHS mandate, at least, not until now. They won’t close down because of the mandate.
We have the mandate here in Massachusetts. Catholic Charities still exist.
Fact is, removing the mandate wouldn’t change premiums, because the cost of birth control is less than pregnancy and child birth.
Heck, from an economical point of view, the insurance companies would probably raise the premiums if the mandate was removed, because they’d fear being faced with paying for more pregnancies and childbirths, which far out cost contraception.
Not justifying contraception here, just point out the economics from an business point of view.
Jim
This could be a stumbling block for all catholics, caffeteria or otherwise with the spin that can be applied to photo ops by supr pacs etc. Just sayingAs well as an Obama commercial in which he’s pictured with Cardinal Dolan – to the confusion of the faithful, which is exactly Obama’s purpose.

Why am I not surprised?,Those of us who want a disinvitation will not be satisfied with simply that
Thanks for the concession. That’s good!of course it matters to us if Catholic Charities shuts down!!!
You certainly have not been particularly charitable in your debate. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are implying the sin of detraction by us simply voicing ours, which is an unfair mischaracterization of the motives and points we are making.Have I violated a Forum rule? If not, then I’m entitled to my opinion - as you are to yours.

Thanks for the concession. That’s good!![]()
