I still say it’s hypocritical to only hold the Cardinal accountable, and not his superiors.
LOL! Yes, let them hold accountable the Cardinal’s superior who, apparently without any thought or regard for the Catholics of the New York Archdiocese, appointed such a clearly incompetent cleric to that office. 🙂 🤷

Of course I have respect for Cardinal Dolan! Please forgive me if that did not come across in my last post-reading it again, I can see my failure in portraying that and focusing too much on the negative. I suppose I thought that high esteem for the Cardinal was a presupposition to everything that is being said in this topic, but obviously that is not the case or did not come across in my post.

The deep respect that I (and many fellow Catholics) has for the Cardinal almost makes this Obama thing even worse…when you say, “Finally, a great Shepherd in such a needed area!” And then these things happen, the letdown is rough. Of course, it is not the worst thing that could happen, and many Cardinals have failed in ways that are not even comparable to the error I think Dolan is committing.

I also feel the need to point out that I don’t think Dolan is doing any of this intentionally. He is obviously a great man and a great priest to be appointed to his office, and is doing what he has deemed best for the Catholics who are under his guidance. That doesn’t mean he is doing what is best, as he is not immaculate.

I think you may be mixing up high regard and approval of someone’s actions, but maybe not. My reading comprehension fails me quite often concerning the internet!

I read an article on Lifesite News,Cardinal Dolan was quotes as saying he had doubts about his invitation to Obama being a good idea.

thanks for the info, I am looking or should I say hearing the Cardinal and Giants baseball game rite now. I will tape the Al Smith dinner

Just finished watching Cardinal Dolan’s talk at the Al Smith dinner. He was very good. Funny when needed, very serious when needed, and represented our Church well. He did not shy away from talking about the fact that our Faith does not stop when we leave Mass on Sunday but in fact permeates every aspect of our lives and service.

After it was done, President Obama came up to him and said something which I could not quite make out as they had started to cut the sound away at that time.

Having said that, I am still concerned that being on the same stage, getting photos taken with the Cardinal at such an event, could be used in such a way by the Obama campaign as to paint them with a veneer of approval and cause Catholics who might otherwise vote against him, to reconsider or to provide cover for those who may wish to, but who’s conscience is bothering them.

One of the best lines tonight was from the Cardinal himself where he tried to relay the message the Pope gave him to the two presidential candidates but the Pope said it in Latin and he didn’t understand it.

I’m sure he was kidding.

Romney’s humor at the dinner was terrific and better than Obama’s, I thought, although the latter was also quite good. I heard them speak live on MSNBC.

Thank you so much. I really got a good laugh out of it. Hope others will see it. I think that
the more people see/hear Romney, the more they like him. He’ll be a great president.😃

That was cool. If there’s a link for the whole thing I’d like to see that.

It was appropriate to the moment to do it … but somehow I’m always caught a bit offguard when a non-Catholic praises the good things about the Church. Or a Catholic come to think of it. Remarks were funny, some self-deprecating, some chiding the opposition, but then remarks that praised Obama which were surprising and collegial.

I agree jwinch. I think Cardinal Dolan should have nothing to do with the Obama administration so close to the election. There is so much confusion among Catholics - as evidenced by the Obama supporting Democrat Catholics on these forums. The Cardinal should not have attended the event - it contributes to the confusion among Catholics who think that its okay to vote for Obama. Obama is attacking the Catholic church - it is not cause for laughter and fellowship, but for drawing distinction between the Obama administration and the Catholic church.

I’m not so sure about that. This is incredibly scandalous, on a national scale. It gives dissenting Catholics a loophole to continue their ardent and public dissent and scandalization of the Church by saying, “Oh look, Cardinal Dolan is okay with this guy…” It also gives that impression to non-religious or non-Catholic people that Cardinal Dolan and Mr. Obama are best buddies and everything is alright, thus giving them ample opportunity to justify support of Mr. Obama and his anti-Catholic policies. For the last few decades the Church has been too willing to “enter into dialogue” with those that aren’t really interested in dialogue at all. And thus we allow ourselves to be used as political pawns. Mr. Obama does not care one bit for the Catholic Church, sees it as an obstacle, and to think that having a little chat over a lovely dinner and some jokes with the man will change anything, is stunningly naive. Doing this at this time when we are in a bitter fight for our very sacred religious freedom, totally undermines and cuts the legs out from underneath this fight.

Let us not forget, Cardinal Dolan presided over the re-dedication of St. Francis Xavier in New York City and was presented with several LGBT groups that are PART of, endorsed by, and organized by, the Church and he did not bat an eyelash.

I continue to pray for Cardinal Dolan, that he will change his mind, and take the radical stand we need in this country.

God bless.

👍 Well said, I have been praying as well, I hope that were wrong on this, but it seems hard to think that based on what we see.

I have respect for Cardinal Dolan, but there is something not right for me to see Obama and others laughing when he is infringing the first freedom, religious freedom, and so many Catholics and non Catholics are being put in a terrible predicament. Obama also supports homosexual marriage and abortion, intrinsic evils. If the Al Smith dinner had serious speeches maybe I would have not have such a problem, or if the Al smith dinner was behind closed doors and not filmed or photographed, but to have such a public display of joking as if everything is fine is not right to me. I wonder what God thinks of this?

*I little while ago I was watching the Masses on EWTN during the Litany to our Blessed Mother Mary so that I could catch the sermons being given by the different Bishops who had been invited to Celebrate the Mass. One Bishop, I wish i could remember which one, made a comment that really made me stop and think. I Hope I can quote him well.
If my memory serves me well he said, “Our enemy is sin, not those who do not understand what sin is. It is our hope and prayer that they will come to understand and now this enemy that is an enemy of all mankind and that they would choose to change or convert.”
I believe that was what he said, sorry if I do not get it quite right. Anyway it made a lot of sense to me and I can see how one can sit down and have dinner with sinners. I believe there is also a Gospel about Jesus having dinner with the sinners of His time and when those who were scandalized by it questioned Him He said something to the effect that He had come for the sinner. The ones who needed to be saved. Not for those who did not need to be saved. He compared Himself to being a physician.
Here is the Gospel of Mathew that I believe is what I am remembering:drb.scripturetext.com/matthew/9.htm
Maybe our Bishops do know what they are doing.
