Congratulations Archbishop Timothy Dolan President-Elect and Bishop Joseph Kurtz, Vice-President Elect, USCCB!!!

May the Lord stregthen your hands and protect you from your enemies, and may you remain ever-faithful to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!

This is awesome news! May Christ continue to guide and protect His Church here on Earth, and especially in the United States!

I also applaud the choices of these two in particular because of their comfort and facility with communication and their willingness to engage the secular arena and to keep abreast of the arguments in the public square.

So far, this has been a night-and-day contrast to the 2008 conference. What a mega difference. I should hold my praise for the full week, I guess. We’ll have to see what the rest of the week brings, but so far, so good.

Thrilled also to see Bishop Wester up there. I wish we hadn’t lost him; he was such an asset to our region, but clearly he is being extremely well used. Bright, articulate, together.

How absolutely delightful! 👍

. Praise God for giving us someone to help steady the American Catholic Church

God Bless them both as they seek to do Our Lord’s will. 🙂

WAHOO! I am soooo glad that Archbishop Dolan got the presidency! 👍

‘American Catholic Church’: uh, no such thing, Marie. It’s properly called: ‘ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN AMERICA’

No offense. Was just identifying the country. 😉

I wasnt trying to be either proper or improper. 😉

Quite all right…no offense taken, none given…😉 😉

It’s just that I can’t stand the term, ‘American Catholic’. No, you’re a ‘Catholic American’.

Just a minor correction. That is Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville is the Vice-President Elect.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

I’m loving’ it! :bounce:

“You might interpret this as the bishops are tired of short and skinny presidents.” – The new president of the USCCB, New York’s Timothy Dolan, 😃

So for those of us who are ignorant, is he conservative?

(stupid question I know)

You know, I hate seeing “liberal” and “conservative” applied to bishops – these are political labels. From what I can gather Abp. Dolan is orthodox, sound on life issues and sensitive to social justice issues and he has to navigate NY politics. He also seems to have a great sense of humor.

For some people he is not conservative enough, e.g., meeting with pro-abortion politicians rather than refusing them Communion outright. Abp. Dolan pointed out that each bishop has his own style. Some bishops handle it differently and many more don’t confront the issue at all. 😦

For liberals he is too conservative, opposing the health care bill “just” because of abortion. Or think he spends too much time confronting the NY Times over their anti-Catholicism instead of helping the poor or whatever.

Sorry, Redbaron, I don’t mean to dump on you but I needed to get that off my chest.

I agree. I despise people who use political labels for religious positions. The question to ask is “Is he orthodox?” The degree of a bishop’s political conservatism or liberalism should mean nothing.

BTW, the opposite of orthodox is heterodox, not liberal or conservative.

And another note. Every bishop who is a member of the USCCB and therefore a member of the Catholic Church, is by definition orthodox. It is the Church that declares someone heterodox, not the laity.

Ok. I have asked for this list before. So far, I have a blank piece of paper. Can any of you list what makes Dolan so good? Let’s have actual facts please.

Uggh, I am disgusted!!! Goes to show that reading reports about how “orthodox” someone is, doesn’t make it so. I saw this posted on another thread, after watching it, I withdraw my enthusiasm, but continue my prayer. This is sad.

Sad? I beg to differ. I found it uplifting.
