There is nothing sacred about a bodily function. Sex is simply an expression of deep feelings between two people. There is nothing “sacred” about it. With animals it is true that sex is strictly aimed at procreation, with humans it is not. Only the human female is willing to accept sex outside the time of oestrus, and at most only 5% of the sexual encounters is explicitly aimed at conception. In a very good sense procreation is the exception, not the norm. Sex is just too good to waste on the procreative act only, and couples outside the reproductive age should not and do not abstain.
