To make up for past injustices to the people of a race denied opportunities because of their color. That’s precisely how I see it. You don’t? Fine.
And present injustices in the form of ethnically biased standardized testing and the underfunding of inner-city schools, plus a broken educational system where children from high tax sub-burbs have quality schools compared to the abyssmal state on inner-city education.

Inequality in American education is the modern Civil Rights issue with minorities on the short end of the stick- as usual.

You know, the “waaaah, boohooo, likfe isn’t fair” schtick is really getting old. Everyone has an excuse nowadays.

What is it they don’t understand.? Do you believe that people should be given preference in college admissions because of the color of their skin?
I certainly don’t oppose it.

The argument runs that there is still a great deal of disparity in terms of backgrounds and privileges for people of varying races and that it’s absurd to pretend that an “equal playing field” exists in a game like college admissions.

So, I’m not opposed to taking the unequalness of the playing field into account. Frankly, I think people who object so strongly to it are either operating out of a misguided desire for “fairness” that overlooks inequities that exist in the system currently or just have had their pwecious widdle feewings hurt that they got wait-listed for that prestitious school.

Tough on them. They ought to grow up and join the real world.

A “stick” conservatives want to fix by freeing minorities from the Public education monoploy. You don’t compensate for busted public school system by lowering standards for getting into college. You don’t in discrimination by discriminating.

If that’s your perception. . . . . sorry about that.

Bottom line is that the playing field isn’t level. Independent research tells us this and affirmative action policies have done the US a great deal of good- even assisting towering minority Conservative firgures by their own telling.

I am “white” (whatever white is) as are my children. Why aren’t I conserned about a minority being hired over me? Why am I not conserned that my daughter won’t be treated fairly in this nation due to her skin color?

Yeah. The points Ringil just made don’t exist any more. They disapeared with Brown vs Bd of Ed.

Is there no hypocrisy in “leveling the playing field” so to speak, by “un-leveling the playing field”?

It is total hypocrisy and most people know it. They just don’t care or accept it or think its justified.

Just becuase you dont mind being discriminated against doesnt mean it should be legal. Either discrinination based on the color of ones skin is legal or it is not.

Clearly, they don’t know how affirmative action works. There was a time when doing so in the name of civil rights made sense because of the great inequality. Of course, it is less needed today because of the acceptance of diversity. However, there aren’t many women in executive roles, so there still may be a need for affirmative action

With that said, this bake sale is dumb

Affirmative action is equally dumb.

Nope, in 2008 when we elected a brown skinned man to president. Everything’s fixed now.
Ringil didn’t say that, and sure as heck doesn’t think that.

Racism is alive and well. I’ve been alone with other white folks in the gym and heard it. I’ve heard it in Church. I’ve heard it in school. If any one of you guys state that you haven’t heard it behind closed doors then you are not being honest.

Research shows it’s there. The US has made great progress but we have a long way to go. I am hopeful that the changing demographics of the US will eventually break down the old boy networks that reign in some areas of higher education- especially the most prestigeous.

We need a system in higher education that doesn’t have a WASP sized peg hole and just try to hammer in every other kind of peg.

I think you’re missing the point. There are inequities in the system. There is social policy in place that takes those inequalities into consideration for purposes of college admission.

That is all. Whether you or anyone else thinks it’s “hypocritical” – which it’s not – has absolutely no bearing on the facts.
