I am a female who is both white and Native American. I grew up in an underprivileged neighborhood where, if you didn’t hear gun shots during the night, it was a relatively calm night.

I find Affirmative Action** offensive**.

How dare anyone tell me I need some sort of special privilege in order to compete. That’s insulting to my dignity.

When I applied to college, I was supposed to indicate my race on the application form. It listed just about every race you can think of, and at the bottom it added “Other (specify)” I checked that box and wrote in “Human.” I was admitted.

Someone explain how using discrimination ends discrimination. I believe the Church teaches us it is never okay to do wrong so that good may result.

I sincerely hope those who are in favor of Affirmative Action never need a brain surgeon and the doctor turns out to be someone who barely got into medical school only on account of his or her race or gender.

As far as the bake sale is concerned, I guess I get part of a cookie, but I get it for free. And as far as reparations are concerned, I guess I can pay myself back the land my ancestors stole from my other ancestors. 😃

So go volunteer to be that role model. Or give some of your time to tutor. Don’t fall into intrinsically evil racial pattens by deciding that minorities are inferior and need lower standards, or that white kids don’t matter.
To whom are you addressing your remarks? I’ve taken time off from work (it’s allowed) to tutor and mentor several black kids (4th graders) at a public school which our office has taken under its wing. I also read to several classes during National Reading Week (mostly 2nd graders) and have “taken kids to work.” You know the kids appreciate it because they call me “Grandpa” and hug me, showing how needy they are for an adult male role model.

I’m not the only one from my work who does that - and we are all LIBERALS!!! Not a single conservative lifts a finger to do anything like that. Oh, they do where you live? Great. Not around here.

So one needn’t wonder why I will support only the Democratic candidates in the coming elections.

When your thinking of the few, few white kids who attend inner city schools that have empty swimming pools because they cant afford to fill them up.

Don’t forget about the thousands, if not millions of kids who attend rural schools that end at 8th grade and the ones that do go on to 12th who have to raise the funds to just have a scrubby baseball team…don’t hear much complaining from those kids do you. I guess there are still a few in this world who are just happy to have what they can obtain by the sweat of their own brow.
You vision of rural America is so romantic it nearly brought a tear to my eye.

If you think that, you have little idea how physicians become Board-certified to become surgeons, particularly cardiac and brain surgeons. A little secret between you and me - only the top people get that kind of advanced training.

👍

It is racist to say to white people that you must pay the price for what our ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
Hundreds of years ago, my ancestors were peasants eking out livings on the plains of Poland. Those people didn’t even know where Warsaw, let alone the New World, was.

How does that follow from the fact that you donate your time with others to do charitable work? I don’t see anything particularly Democrat vs Republican in private, charitable work. 🤷

Rich that’s the problem with affirmative action for entrance. They get in there and can’t always complete the necessary courses. It’s a waste of time and money. Better to make sure objective requirements apply to all equally.

Only the top people, regardless of race or gender, should get into medical school in the first place, or medical schools will be graduating those who are not of the highest caliber. And then who will be getting the “advanced training”?

I worked in education for ten years, and I know what happens when you lower the bar.

A big, big difference between an ordinary M.D. and one who is FACS. Some incompetents do become M.D.s, I agree, or don’t make it through medical school.

.
You took a whole day off during National Reading Week?

Should we refer to you as Saint Rich?

Do you think it’s easy to get into medical school?
And then who will be getting the “advanced training”?
Those who want to become surgeons and who show the competence and temperment to be able to do so.

Wonderful. My wife taught in the New York City school system for almost her entire life, and it’s no sinecure.

And when you lower the bar for a specific group, class or race everyone questions the qualifications of everyone from that specific group, class or race - even those that are there because they earned it.

It’s not at all about money payments.

Anyone calling my sons “Polacks” or “Wops” or “Ginzos” would have their faces broken. Your son is different in his attitude, and that’s fine.

I’m Polish-American, my wife is Sicilian-American. We are proud of our ethnic heritages.
Then what is it about, Rich? What? Quantify it. Do you think white people should just be consumed by guilt for the rest of our lives in perpetuity? If it’s not about money, what is it about? Are we supposed to give the country back to the Indians and let them and the never-have-been-slave black Americans fight it out for possession? I really want to know what you believe we owe anyone. And by WE I do not mean anyone who kept slaves in the 18th century, but US, the people who live in this wonderful land of opportunity RIGHT NOW.

You didn’t understand my statement. My son’s BLACK friends call him, a very WHITE BOY, “." There, I said it. They use it as a term of affection, that he is included in their circle. He “passes” as a ",” I suppose. 😃

I will say it again. Once his generation gets a few years older, the race card will be GONE because they do not see color as a reason for what they do and don’t do, who they hang with and don’t hang with. I wonder what the race-baiters will do at that point.

Exactly.

The soft bigotry of low expectations… where did I hear that before?
