Affirmative Action is nothing more than giving people an unfair advantage based on nothing more than their skin color or sexual anatomy. How that corrects past injustice based on the same reasons is beyond me.
In other news, the black population in prisons is disproportionate, so they are now going to incarcerate more white folks to even things out. 😉

You know, the emplyment of black athletes in pro football is very disportionate. I suggest that they stop all future NFL games until they iron this problem out.

Good point…NBA also. They should give give white men that can’t jump a chance. 👍

It makes zero sense to vote for a pro affirmative action pro abortion politician. The one who could actually benefit from it the most are killed off.

Well, maybe the conservatives were over at PP caring for the children that the liberals don’t care about?
If the meeting was last night, I did my volunteering serving the homeless moms and kids PP doesn’t care about.

But is this true?

Why, then, would Asians do so well on them?

Is this a matter of biases of the prevailing culture against minorities or biases of some minorities against the prevailing culture?
This is a great observation. 👍

I can vouch for what is going on in this video. We actually had people quit right after Obama was elected. One of them said to me, “Don’t worry, Obama is gonna take care of me, he gonna buy me a car, he gonna buy me a house, he gonna pay for my gas.”
You have it right. The world abounds in fools with false expectations.

I know some Vietnamese “boat people” who came here and made good. Nobody was poorer than them, and they couldn’t even speak English. Some can’t do all that well at English now, but they all seem to thrive in this society, and they seek education like a frog seeks a pond. No affirmative action exists for them. There might be some Vietnamese who stayed poor in this country, but I never met one.
I get my nails done in a Vietnamese shop. They cannot really speak English. They know “How can I help you” and “pick out a color” in really badly accented English. But they know the name of every one of their customers. Mine is “Kitine.” They all take American names, like Lisa, Kevin, or Kelly. I asked Kelly if she was going to be closed on Labor Day. She said, “No, I like to eat.” I said, “But it’s a holiday.” She said, “I like to eat on holiday too.”

Her son graduated from college. Her grandson toes to Catholic grade school. They all go to church on Sunday (we have a Vietnamese personal parish in St. Louis. The mass is in Vietnamese.

The whole family works together in the business.
I’m not sure it’s poverty so much as it is culture that keeps people down; their own culture. The really terrible (white) subculture described in the novel and movie “Winter’s Bone” is said to be set in the very same county as College of the Ozarks, and the students of C of O are drawn almost entirely from the very same local areas and ethnic origins as the people in “Winter’s Bone”. They go to the very same grade schools and high schools. Why do some young people sink into the dregs while some who are not a bit wealthier or better educated to start with pull themselves out? In my opinion it has to do with the culture or subculture, perhaps most importantly including that of the family, more than anything else.
I agree. Where you see healthy families, you see healthy attitudes.

  1. College is about expanding your worldview. College students don’t expand their worldview nearly as much if they are surrounded by people that have a similar background to themselves. Perhaps it is a good thing that Joe College white guy might have a black roommate? Perhaps they could both learn from each other. Colleges “shape” their student body to reflect the true society, not just the white, middle class.
College professors, take heed!

Exactly. And, Obama duped a lot of people, including well-meaning Catholics.
Mr. Obama made no such promises to anyone, Catholics or otherwise. What they thought he said and what he said didn’t always coincide. That is true of all politicians’ promises. He’s no different than any other. Remember, for example, “Read my lips. No new taxes.” Sins of both parties. 🤷

Pretty much restricted to Asian families, not just the Vietnamese. Sadly, one doesn’t often see that fine attitude on the part of white families.

I’m sorry? Where did I claim that Obama said something specific and/or that it doesn’t happen in other political races?

How’s that hopey-changey thing working out? 😛

Anyone who allows him/her self to be duped by the promises of a politician deserves every bit of disappointment that he/she gets.

That’s your definition. It’s not mine, nor the definition of those others who back Affirmative Action. A simple fact.
So when faced with the truth, you wish to hide behind a dictionary of your own creation.
As long as you realize you are hiding the truth from yourself.

This thread is starting to depress me, how is this even considered a funny joke the fact that there are so many of our brothers and sisters in jail? Specially from a particular race? What does that say about our society?

I don’t want to pick on you, but I just don’t see the humor in these type of situations.

I look at some of the minority neighborhoods in the US, and they remind me of the 3rd world. I’m from central america, and I’ve been all the way to the slums of Mumbai and seen the most extreme poverty … seeing some parts of the US remind me of these places is not a cause for joy. If it happens that a community is affected by this disproportionately, we should look at all the causes, pray and do everything that is possible to fix this.

There are a disproportionate number of guilty people in prison too. If we lock up more innocent people, maybe we could improve the prison environment, on average.

First, we need some volunteers for this experiment. Any takers here?😃

How about the radical suggestion that people are judged by the content of their character and not on the color of their skin? Even saying that could cause a lot of people to hate you, or at least accuse you of “hate speech”.
