I’m starting this thread because I’ve been on a thread where Jack Chick and his tracts have been discussed by several forum members. It seems so important and so emotional a topic that I thought it deserved its own thread.

What I am asking is:

IS JACK CHICK RIGHT??
You’re not seriouisly asking that question, are you?

Chick is a huckster, a con man. No reputable protestant will even touch him with a ten-foot pole. His tracts are the worst sort of tripe. He is below inanity.
On some things yes, on some no…
And what, pray tell, do you think that imbecile is right about?

Well he says Jesus is the Son of God, died on the cross for our sins, and that through Him we have salvation…at least he’s spot on about that. 😃

I do agree with some that his evangelizing stuff is good, but it’s unfortunate he wastes so much time on anti-Catholic trash. He needs to understand what love for God really means.

LOL. Even the worst heretic can figure THAT much out.

But that is his organization’s whole reason for being, to bash Catholicism. That is why even his correct information is tainted.

We’ll, I 'm careful who I call what since we will give account…But it was one of his first booklets someone gave me that allowed the Holy Spirit to start working on me…It wasn’t much longer after that I had a pretty radical conversion experience…It wasn’t much longer for my druggie coworker buddy also in the same year…Our coworkers wondered what happened to us…peace to you…

Well, thats all fine and dandy. I’m glad that you found God. But be that as it may, Chick is a bona fide liar, and he spreads only calumny. He exists at the fringe of the fringe.

Caramel,

now that you have quoted these.

Can you finally tell us WHY you think the above is wrong?
  • Don’t tell us your opinion. Tell us objectively WHY you disagree, that would mean a great deal of difference between someone who spouts gibberish and another who speaks with sensibility.

I will keep my mouth shut, this person will not be here another week, and we can Thank God for that

Peter was the head of a group that was illegal and considered a threat to the empire. As such, to name him in a letter giving away his location would be a death sentence. Peter does write his epistle from “Babylon” which was always taken to be Rome. Further, history record both Peter and Paul being killed in Rome.

The NT DOES mention the office of Pope, but you do not see it as such. The office of Pope is the head of the Bishops. In other words, the Pope is just a Bishop with one extra role. We see Peter performing that role more than once.

Because someone has to be the leader. Someone has to say “We meet at this time in this place.” Someone has to be the face of the group

These are traditions that developed over the Middle Ages. If they died off, no one would care. If you did not “bow” to the pope, nothing would be done to you.

Here is another example of a slight misconception leading you way off. Succession is not passed from Pope to Pope. It is passed through the bishops themselves. In order to have a true gap, you would need ALL of the Bishops on earth to die off at one time. THe Pope is just a bishop with an extra set of duties
Thanks for the reply Ralphinal,

The reason why we cannot proceed further is because…

1 - History <> Bible. To many, if its not in the Bible, its not worth pursuing.
2 - Role <> Office. I can be managing an office, but I’m not the manager but only a clerk.
3 - Someone has to be…is itself an assumption.
4 - No punishment for not doing <> Alright to expect/ask for it to be performed.
5 - Tradition never dictates religion, if it does God would have to don sunglasses.
6 - Succession does not exist when appointment itself cannot be proven to have started.

(<> means not equal to)

There are just too many ASSUMPTIONS and too much reliance on History and/or tradition.

When we read the Bible, it seems to tell us that we need ONLY God.

1 John 2:27 The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you, remain in Him.

I am happy for your story.

At the same time, we should always remember that God can work miracles in the worst and most sinful situation if there is a truth seeking soul. St. Paul, before his conversions persecuted the Christian Jews because he felt their continued existence is sacrilege against God. He was one of those truth seeking Pharisees. Well, because he seeks the truth, God used his heart to bring about one of the greatest conversion stories ever.

So I would not be surprise that some readers of Jack Chick will find some truth. However, it does not at all merit Jack Chick. It is only God whose grace you receive through a bad hand. Even within the Catholic fold, a misguided priest will still be able to celebrant Mass and the faithful can still receive Christ in the flesh. This is because it is God working, not the man. In the same way it is God working, not the author of any particular book. Though some authors are definitely more God oriented than others.

This is analogous to receiving the sacraments. If I had a choice of receiving communion from a holy man who is not ordained or a sinful man who by the Sacrament of Holy Orders from Christ, I would sit through a sinful homily to receive because it is not the merit of the man – but it is the Real Presense of my Lord in what only looks like bread and wine.

The question(in my opinion) is ludicrous in itself and I’m quite surprised that ANY Catholic who comprehends his/her faith would waste anyone’s time by posing it on a Catholic forum unless that person is trying to provoke controversy, furor, and anger. These fora are are for reasoned discussion from a Christian perspective and all too often devolve into an us against them mentality with accompanying uncharitable posts. This question as you well know(in my opinion)is a lightening rod for Catholics who are targeted for hate by this sick, bigoted old man who desperately needs our prayer.
Most Catholics are not well formed in their faith, though, and many fall prey to just such drivel as contained in these pamplets. All the best lies contain at least a grain of truth, and thus, so do his crazy polemics. For example, the host in the Latin Rite sometimes has IHS printed upon it. this is a truth. What he makes out of that, though is preposterous!

The above is an excellent example of how one verse of scripture is taken out of context, and it’s meaning subverted. When we add the prior verse to it we have a better understanding of what St John is telling us.
26 These things have I written to you, concerning them that seduce you. 27 And as for you, let the unction, which you have received from him, abide in you. And you have no need that any man teach you; but as his unction teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie. And as it hath taught you, abide in him.

St. John is speaking of those who try to impart new knowledge, or heresies. Like the garbage Jack Chick spews. That we have been sufficiently taught already having the blessing of the Holy Spirit through the Church that Christ had already established.

I wouldn’t say most. There are many more of us and consequently a greater number that don’t, but I wonder if the actual percentage is higher when compared with the same of other faiths?

A true heretic wouldn’t accept that much.

This sound just like Jack Chick, and is as ignorant as Jack

Thanks for the reply Ralphinal,

What was Jerusalem like under Roman rule? Why did Rome not like the Early Church? These are important questions that the Bible does not answer, but knowing them gives you a better understanding of things. I do hope that you are aware that there was a period of time where there was NO NT, and several centuries before we had the Bible as we know it?
2 - Role <> Office. I can be managing an office, but I’m not the manager but only a clerk.
3 - Someone has to be…is itself an assumption.
Does Jesus sign the checks for your church? Does Jesus call meetings to order?
4 - No punishment for not doing <> Alright to expect/ask for it to be performed.
Show me where the popes for the last 200 years have done so.
5 - Tradition never dictates religion, if it does God would have to don sunglasses.
Not sure what you mean.
6 - Succession does not exist when appointment itself cannot be proven to have started.
To be quite honest, if you cannot see the role of the bishop in the Bible, I am not sure that I can continue this conversation. The role of the Bishop IS clearly in the NT, with the Apostles filling that role first.

And the Eunich told Philip that he could not understand if no one taught him. Phillip did not correct him, did he? No.

Show me the verse that clearly says that all you need is the Bible. I can show you the verse that says that the CHURCH is the piller and bullwark of the TRUTH. I want to see where it says all you need is the Bible.

I’ll give you a hint: it is not in ST. Paul’s works
