Could Jack Chick be Right???

My favorite Chick tract is entitled “Holy Joe”. Based in WWII within the Pacific theater (where I think Chick saw action) Joe (a Marine grunt) is trying to proselytize his compatriots - his sergeant and a fellow Marine private. Joe gets a sympathetic response from his fellow Marine compatriot, while his sergeant harasses him constantly about his religious beliefs. Soon, all three are killed in combat. The sergeant (who hated and mistreated Joe) pleads for forgiveness and at the last second, goes to heaven, while Joe’s fellow Marine (who listened and tried to understand Joe’s beliefs) dies and goes straight to hell. No good deed goes unpunished. :rolleyes:

There’s an even worse one than that. Chick did some blaxpoitation style comic about a gang banger who ends up killing half a dozen men, but gets shot in the process. He goes to this girl he’s lusted after and right then and there says he believes in Jesus, apparently being saved. :rolleyes:

I want to throw something out there for us to consider. Today, you can go to any major bookstore and buy books that accurately show the Catholic faith, including the CCC. You can access websites, like this one and EWTN, that explain the true Catholic faith. Most places have access to EWTN on t.v. and many have CAtholic Radio (in the United States). There are only four reasons one would publish things that were untrue about the Catholic faith in this informaiton age.
  1. They are too lazy to fact check.
  2. They are too dumb to care one way or the other.
  3. They do not care about the truth and are more interested in printing their misconceptions.
  4. They KNOW what they print is wrong and do not care on iota.
Which one is Mr. Chick?

Alberto Magno Romero Rivera (1935 – June 20, 1997) was an anti-Catholic religious activist who was the source of many of fundamentalist Christian author Jack Chick’s stories about the Vatican.
Chick promised to promote Alberto’s claims even after he died. Rivera claimed to have been a Jesuit before becoming a Fundamentalist Protestant, and many of the stories Chick published about Rivera involve Jesuit conspiracies.

I’d say #3 and #4.
 
What amazes me is how this “stuff” gets out there and causes so much trouble. I saw his “stuff” years ago and found it so wildly sick. How can a Catholic throw everything you ever learned about Jesus, spirituality and the Church out the window based on this guy’s wild accusations that don’t even add up to sound logic and true scholarship?

When people are most vulnerable and needy they are easy prey to guys like this and their rhetoric. His artist’s drawings are quite uninviting and hostile looking. Maybe they appeal to the dark model of conspiracy theories and esoteric overtones of all the twisted information presented in these “graphic novels” and false promises implied. So elitist in tone and accusation. “Conquer by ridicule” could be the battle cry. That is not from God.

The Holy Spirit reigns when it comes to good counsel and wisdom.
Ask, seek, knock.

I find it interesting that “God” never has a face. He has arms and a body and wears some sort of garment, but he has no face. Maybe it’s done as a sign of respect but I find it bizarre.

You know, you’re right. Great observation.
This guy did a lot of stuff. But the more I look at it, the more I find it disturbing. There’s a backdrop of fear to all this.

He’s trying to dipict God as a source of light like when Frodo saw Arwen in the Movie LTR. Light not distinguishing features. Though as a side note it should have been Glorofindel

“These people” that you are referring to are the community known as the Corinthians. They are Christians baptized by Saint Paul and his disciples into the Mystical Body of Christ living in this area of the near east. However, they are sinners, and so they are re-instructed on what not to do and what to do. They are an biblical example of a Christian community in disarray and full of heresies. Yet still, he calls them to sainthood, to live the life of faith handed down through him from Christ. These are the the same teachings he brings to all the communities he founded. What is a teaching, unless there are teachers and students. He is their shepherd and they are his flock, he is their “father in Christ” and they are his “children in Christ”. He is most definitely teaching them. He can teach with chastisement, but he is still teaching. In actually though he is not just chastising, he is clarifying, admonishing, guiding, and correcting their mistakes and heresies. He even goes so far as to let them know that their actions and practices of faith will be judged by God.

I think it was Vladimir Lenin who said, “A lie has to be supported with another lie.” I am certain Chick believes some of the basics of what he teaches, but after he reaches the point of no return he simply has to keep digging himself deeper and deeper into the pit of deceit to the point where, even if he knows deep down that he is wrong, he cannot turn back because has to support his warped theology and understanding of other faiths.

Here’s a article from this very site on Alberto Rivera. Basically he is a big con and he has never been a priest. On top of that he and Jack just write stuff cause they lack moral value. They probably think what they are saying is somewhat correct since people believe them and support them. But it’s just like the any old scandal or controversies, if you feed into the darkness out there, someone will bite. Just imagine everyone having a chance at the Garden of Eden; there’s gonna be a lot of stolen forbidden fruits.

St Paul would have made a great football coach. In the begining of practice week you admonish your players about what they did wrong in the last game. You then practice the right way by showing them how to do it right.By the end of the practice week you start building your team up by telling them how good they are and how they have the capacity to win the next game… I see him doing this with the Corinthians on a spiritual level of course. 😃

I like the way you think:
I vote for # 3 or # 4 as far as Chick himself. I believe that it’s just business for alot of these guys. The sad truth is because people do not read, and many are not computer literate, or are simply too lazy to cross check things, they accept Chick and others like him.
There is a long history of conflict between Protestants and Catholics that Chick is able to use to his advantage. Chick is a sharp businessman and he has an audience that generally falls into your categories of 1 and 2, but as for chick himself, I believe he is either an unethical business man and he knows it, and does not care, which would dbe your categories 3 and 4, or there is an element of paranoia in his thinking, and he really believes his lies., which could fall into a category 5.
