This is good. IF the Pope ever decides to name Lay Cardinals again (male or female) I think it would be wise that he let’s the Catholics know he’s going to remove the canon law at least a few years before actually naming one. Today, we are so used to ordained Cardinals that a change in canon law would take some time to digest.
Let people get used to the possiblity before actually do it.
NOTE: while I do think it’s technically possible for female Cardinals, I’m not sure what good it would do without a number of lay (male and female) Cardinals. One token female Cardinal is useless and potentially a PR nightmare. However, somewhere between 10 & 20 lay cardinals (evenly split between male and female) might be better. Or simply appointing 5-10 nuns as Cardinals (must be a nun to be a Cardinal) if they do not want to open it up to the laity.
If this ever happens, they have make sure it’s not seen as “the token female Cardinal” PR stunt.
