Oh yeah. I loved that Monterey performance. I wonder if it’s really true that Papa John Phillips dumped a cup of coffee over Albert Grossman to make him let her perform a second set there.

I won’t say it’s better than the original but pretty good effort.

Alice in Chains with Gretchen Wilson - Barracuda

Haha not surprising. They cut to Mama Cass again at 5 :25 ish …priceless.
Janis’ range is exquisitely on display at Monterey. And her smile when she leaves the stage…

Okay, not a cover… But who can cover Nancy’s intro and Ann’s vocals here?
This is from about the time I fell in love with them. They were third billed behind the Eagles and Steve Miller. Heart stole the show. So much passion! No autotuners, no high tech laser lighting, just the fireworks of Ann Wison’s voice.

No way! The Everly Bros were amazing. The arrangement and the vocal harmony on the original—killer stuff. Also—their original version of “Love Hurts” is far superior to the 1970s power ballad.

I like the original Erma Franklin (Aretha’s sister) version personally.

I am like the villain of this thread, sticking up for the originals. The Gloria Jones version of “Tainted Love” crushes Soft Cell. I keep seeing downright musical errors on this thread! Aerosmith’s version of Come Together better than the Beatles?

A little jazzy for me, with the horn section. Still, a great voice and an interesting contrast to Janis’ screaming anguish…

Oh, I am seeing some crazy stuff here!

Some of them are legit—you were right that Etta James totally owned At Last. And I think you were the one who nailed “Unchained Melody” too—a lot of people don’t even know that these weren’t even the originals.

Here is some more Etta—a “cover” of “Tell Daddy” by Clarence Carter with some lyrical changes. Etta claimed she really didn’t care much for the song, but I think it is great.

Oh, I love the Big Brother and the Holding Co. version too, but Erma Franklin has such a great voice like her younger sister. (Although the guitars in the Joplin version are 1st rate)

Didn’t Buddy Holly and the Crickets do the original version?

Great song though!

Actually, Sonny West did the first. Buddy Holly’s version is better. It was co-written by Norman Petty, who worked a lot with Holly.
