Cover Songs that you think are better than the original

God Gave Rock and Roll To You by KISS. To be honest it is probably more of a rewrite than a cover, I forgot the original band that did it.

This was the last performance of the late great Eric Carr before he past away from cancer. Unfortunately they had to redo the drum tracks, current drummer Eric Singer recorded the track, due to Eric Carr being really weak from cancer at the time. However he is in the video playing and his vocals are on it!

Intersting note: Eric Carr was Catholic and had a Catholic Mass of burial after he passed away.

RIP Eric

Admittedly, Joni Mitchell’s rendition of her own song Both Sides Now is captivating, if a little monochromatic, harmonically speaking:

But Judy Collins’ iconic cover of the song is superior in every way. The re-harmonisation, which adds so much color to the pale original, combines with the ethereal vocals to lift a somewhat pedestrian number to immortality:

Let’s not forget Leonard Nimoy has quite the discography too. Although his originals (“Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”, “Highly Illogical”) tend to be better than his covers.

I have never forgotten my first hearing of Nimoy’s po-faced, rhythmically staid cover of Proud Mary. Truly hideous.

I couldn’t remember if this was a cover, but was just reminded by hearing an old 50s version on the supermarket muzak.
Donald Fagen’s version is like 10000% better.

And just to be contrary:

First, here is Petula Clark with her hit single Downtown:

And now, the inimitable Mrs Miller with her cover of the same tune:

Not to mention Groundskeeper Willie’s stirring rendition of ‘Doontoon’ in ‘The Simpsons’ 😃

I think this one is a little bit better, only because it’s a better recording of the music.
