I have no idea but I had to take off my 3" Benedictine cross at the Baltimore airport this summer because it was “too big”, it had to go in checked luggage. obviously there are instances on records where such crosses have been used as offensive weapons.

she could of just worn it under her shirt as is BA’s policy (British Airways says all jewellery and religious symbols on chains must be worn under the uniform)…sounds like she wants to make a stink where none is needed.
Sounds like BA are using double standards.

You can wear a turban, but not a tiny cross?

Christians are called to spread the gospel at all times.

I can’t believe you are siding with BA.

They specify that all jewelry be worn under your clothes…her cross is a piece of jewelry…simple to assume that she read her employee handbook when she was hired so she knew this…why is it an issue for her now?
You can spread the gospel any time you do not need a cross to do this:)

I would of told them “No” and demanded to see a supervisor. That is religious disrimination. It is high time we stop the secularist from pushing us Christians around.

ALso I think the title of the article is rather misleading…Christians are not banned from wearing the cross…they are banned from wearing jewelry outside of their uniforms…they can still wear their crosses…just under their shirts

Well I would wear the cross under my shirt and when in flight pull the cross out and wear it on the outside. What can they do then? Hey how about bringing statues and Icons aboard. That will show them. Place them upright on your trays for the entire flight. Yes, why not make a statement? The muslims do anytime they were their garb.

In these days of excessive security awareness, Rollaids and toothpaste are verboten. But this is more an employee issue, and it seems pretty clear that the rule is not limited to crucifixes. It does bother me that my teeth fillings and metal coronary implant are more suspect than turbans, burquas, and saris.

Well it’s not like if you were a nun you couldn’t wear your habit on board or anything.

Sounds like a prohibition on wearing all jewellery of any sort outside the clothing. This is for several reasons - I can see OH and S issues with dangling jewellery, especially given how cramped and crowded airplane cabins are. Don’t forget that they are in fact serving food too - so there are the same considerations in play as there are for restaurant workers.

The other is that they are in fact wearing a uniform. Just like I did in school. We had all sorts of restrictions on what jewellery and whatnot we could wear as well. Even restrictions on what we could do - we couldn’t be seen eating on the street in our uniform for example

And heaven forbid that anyone should want uniforms to look … well, uniform!!!

I’ve no doubt some here will be outraged.

Personally, I can’t say I care. Her job requires wearing a uniform, and this kind of jewelry is not allowed with that uniform. If she feels deeply about wearing a crucifix, she can wear it under her clothes.

Wearing a sign around your neck saying ‘I’m a Christian’ isn’t a necessary part of being a good Christian. And frankly, given the number of people who commit very un-Christian acts while wearing crosses, crucifixes, and even rosaries around their necks, some covering up may even be a good thing.

Funny, I got a pretty nasty remark on an Airplane once. Was reading a book about the Catholic church (the title had Catholic Church in it), and she asked me if it was about how bad they were or how great they were.

I said how great, and she gave me a face and said in a screechy voice “Really?!”

Hope you don’t get that “Flight Attendent” with your icons!

Couldn’t she just wear some cross/crucifix earrings? Just a though

She violated a dress policy pertaining to all jewelry. You make it sound as though her religion got her singled out.

Hmm…if BA wanted every employee to look uniform, why are they allowing Sikh Turban and Islamic Hijab? Obviously, they practise double standards and are hypocrites like the Pharisees.

Christians could fax and e-mail our complaints to British Airways management. Also, we could stage protests and demonstrations outside British Airways office, in the way the Muslims do, we could get our rights!

Hmm…Perhaps if you are British national, you may want to inform your local Torries/Conservative MP to organise this protest?

Her complaint appears to be that exceptions to the dress code are made for other religions but not Christians. My personal opinion is that the same dress code should apply to all employees, regardless of their religion. If they don’t like the dress code, they should seek employment elsewhere.

There is no requirement for muslims to wear a hijab (the one covering the face) but they get away with it.

It’s a shame that only non-Christian faiths are allowed to display their religious affiliation in the over politically correct world we call Britain

Im an “in your face” type of guy when my someone belittles my beliefs. So, wearing a very obvious cross or displaying an icon would not be a problem for me. I figure they have a problem not me.
