Catholic Church interested in Crystal Cathedral
By DEEPA BHARATH / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

GARDEN GROVE – The Roman Catholic Diocese is exploring the idea of buying the Crystal Cathedral, which has been struggling financially for the last four years and is in bankruptcy.

The Diocese of Orange released a statement Wednesday morning saying that Bishop Tod D. Brown has authorized The Busch Law Firm and other diocese advisers to “explore the possibilities” regarding Garden Grove’s glass cathedral.

“While we continue to develop plans for a cathedral in Santa Ana, it is prudent to evaluate the opportunity to engage in the pending auction of this property and to mitigate the chance that it ceases to function as a place of worship, if acquired by others,” Bishop Brown said in the release…

I’ve been in it for a wedding.

I personally didn’t find it very inspiring.

Again, just personal taste.

Oh please don’t buy that Church!!! No more crazy/weird churches PLEASE!!

that should prove the Catholic bishops advocate transparency in all their dealings.

yes I believe we need to get our architecture in order, go back to the otherworldly stuff. Especially with breathtaking architecture from earlier centuries…

But in the end, I am glad that there is a possibility that the eucharist will be at home there. More graces!

So in what state is church architecture when the Los Angelas Cathedral is the best amung the examples?? Oh my, I guess I can say that the crystal cathedral would provide great lighting. Yes, look at the positive! 🙂

I don’t see a Catholic takeover likely. The Crystal Cathedral is the iconic building in Robert Schuller’s ministry. Granted, he has retired but he is trying to get his children to continue what he started. Handing over the building to another religion would be a defeat for his followers. I think more likely would be a scenario involving private developers who offer the option of his followers buying back the property.
the article in the first post:
Chapman University’s plan counters one submitted in May by the cathedral and Newport Beach developer Greenlaw Partners LLC. Greenlaw proposed to buy the campus for the same $46 million price, build hundreds of apartments and sell the remainder of the property back to the cathedral for $30 million.

The creditors committee, which comprises many individuals and entities to whom the cathedral owes millions, has filed a motion in bankruptcy court strongly in favor of Chapman University’s proposal. The Chapman proposal would pay off all creditors on the effective date.

I dunno.

Think of all the available square footage of glass →

to replace with as many STAINED GLASS windows??

We certainly have enough saints to honor with a piece of stained glass, don’t we? and events from the Bible… etc.

Really. Could work…

👍

They say the iconostasis in Eastern churches is a representation of the saints and Jesus looking through the clouds of Heaven at the congregation.

Imagine being surrounded by nothing BUT saints… Almost like being in Heaven. 🙂

We already ARE surrounded by saints! And angels!

At every Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

It’s called the Communion of Saints. As you know already, I’m sure. 😉 I kinda knew that’s what you already meant, though. :o

Wouldn’t it be really nice to have stained glass windows as a physical and material representation of this? :o

I’m hoping that if it’s not too expensive, especially considering the cost of electricity to warm and cool such a building, that this could be considered a viable opportunity to give glory to God this way in this building!
👍 😃

California. Heating and cooling is the least of the problems.

Not my cup of tea, but if it works for others, I’m all for it.

If they bought the land, tore down the Crystal Cathedral and built a Gothic architecture church I would be happy. Wouldn’t bet on it, but we can dream. 🙂

Is it hot inside? Looks like a giant green house.
I never visited it, but apparently it does okay, in part because the window glass is reflective.
The Crystal Cathedral was designed after the energy crisis of 1973; a glass box in sunny southern California seeming to represent the height of ignorance toward nonrenewable energy resources even after those issues should have gained universal recognition. Quite the opposite is true. The Crystal Cathedral sanctuary was constructed and occupied without air conditioning or heating systems. The glass skin is uninsulated and the consequently large envelope heat transfer rate is increased by natural ventilation through motorized operable panes scattered across the facades and through the 90 foot tall door near the pulpit. Although the occupancy density is high, there is little plug and light load in the sanctuary, meaning that little heat is generated by
electrical equipment or lighting, especially since little lighting is required during a typical daytime service. Finally, the highly reflective glazing admits only 10% of the incident solar energy.
The resulting rate of heat loss across the enclosure in the mild Orange County, California climate roughly equals the rate of heat gain to the building from both occupants and solar energy during Sunday morning occupancy. The sanctuary space is comfortable throughout most of the year, with occasional cold January days being the exception. Since the completion of the building, spot heating has been added to provide thermal comfort on such cool winter days, but it still operates without summer cooling.

(published in 1997, so its possible things have changed)

True, the current church board probably would consider selling to a housing developer first, but it is an interesting “what if” scenario. :hmmm:

The thought of being encased in stained glass flashed through my mind, too. :highprayer:
I heard that it does have a good organ 😉
I’ve heard the same. 😃
