I don’t know whether bald-faced hypocrisy of the Protestant owner or the ‘feed-them-to-the-Lions’ approach used by YahooNews/Yahoo users upsets me more.
While I agree with you that the anonymous comments left in response to Yahoo News articles are often rude and rarely insightful, I think that is true for most news websites which allow anonymous comments.

I guess I am not sure what your objection to Yahoo News is, though. In the case of the article you mentioned, it is a paraphrase of what was reported by the newspaper local to the Crystal Cathedral, the Orange County Register.

Certainly–there’s no question that in most cases YahooNews isn’t doing the journalism, and largely isn’t responsible for the actual reporting, &c.

However, the ‘actual reporting’ (i.e., wording, ownership, &c.) is much less important than the way news is consumed. For YahooNews, Catholic/church/religion-reporting is largely as a scandal chronicle. In any ticker or news category, the major stories for each are almost exclusively negative–linked or related stories are similarly negative. I would argue that media outlets or suppliers like YahooNews are more deserving of the ‘Big Media Hates the RCC’ charge than individual journalists or news agencies.

Demand certainly meets supply, as the comments sections of these articles are filled with people whose attitude towards religion/church/Christianity is uniformly negative.

I don’t know, but it does seem that CCM prefers the Chapman plan because it allows them to stay in the Crystal Cathedral. It seems reasonable that they are hoping to turn their finances around and buy the property back from Chapman.

The plan offered by the Diocese of Orange doesn’t hold out that hope. So CCM may now see the diocese’s offer as a hostile takeover attempt. 🤷

Interestingly, there is a third organization which has entered the picture. They are a group of businessmen who are trying to preserve the Crystal Cathedral as a Protestant church, but want to break from CCM. They would install Robert A. Schuller as pastor. He is apparently on the outs with the rest of the Schuller family.

I don’t know what Chapman College plans to do with the place, but they are welcome to it! Their bid was for a few million more than the Diocese.

Actually their bid was a few million less than the diocese’s bid, for that reason I am surprised the creditors went for it.

It would pay them off but CCM still might not be able to make ends meet. 😦

The bankruptcy court should reject the sale of the Crystal Cathedral to Chapman University and approve the sale of the cathedral and property to the Diocese of Orange – the highest bidder by over two million dollars. The Diocese knew that the CCM could not afford to pay the lease payments for the three years of the lease so, in the spirit of fairness; they included several extra million dollars in “prepaid” payments for the CCM! They also offered them the option of purchasing nearby Diocese property at a reduced price. This move does not allow the CCM to keep the cathedral but it does provide the best, fairest, and most financially sound solution for all parties.

The “buy back” clause offered by Chapman that enables the CCM to repurchase the cathedral is nothing more than a crafty and calculating negotiating move by the university. If the CCM could not raise more than $172 thousand dollars in two frantic months of fundraising to buy back the cathedral, how are they going to pay the $150 thousand dollars PER MONTH lease payments to Chapman? Short answer: They can’t. Chapman University knows this and the CCM is in “denial” over their ability to finance and pay for this phony carrot dangled in front of them. As soon as the CCM misses a lease payment, they will be in default and breach of contract. They will lose their property, cathedral and ministry and Chapman U. will appreciate a huge discount on the sale. There will likely be more bankruptcy proceedings, civil suits, blaming and accusing. The bankruptcy court and the CCM can avoid all this mess by selecting the truly fairest and highest offer from the Diocese of Orange. It is in everyone’s best interests.

Diocese increases offer to $55.4M

Diocese increases offer AGAIN to $57.5M on eve of judge’s decision.

(this is getting like when I bought my house)

A couple of tidbits from the first article:
The diocese also promised to honor the legacy of Crystal Cathedral founder Robert H. Schuller, maintain a space in the tower for inter-faith worship and preserve the integrity of the Memorial Gardens.

The diocese had promised that there will be a library in the Visitor Center dedicated to founder Robert H. Schuller and his wife, Arvella, who began their ministry more than 55 years ago atop the roof of a snack shack in the Orange drive-in theater. The diocese has also promised that a chapel on the top floor of the Tower of Hope will remain untouched as an inter-faith place of worship.

Based on these discussions, Marc Winthrop, an attorney representing Crystal Cathedral Ministries, said the church’s board is now leaving the door open to the diocese.

Chapman offers $1/month rent for cathedral (though the family life center would be $65K/month).
Yes, but according to the Orange County Register and the Associated Press, that offer would mean forfeiting the buyback option on the main building.

I think that option, and the hope it offers, is what is most appealing to the supporters of the Chapman bid.

According to the OC Register, the judge has delayed making a decision until Thursday. He wants the board of Crystal Cathedral Ministries to discuss the new proposals and then state a preference.

Something that comes into play now is that Bishop Brown turns 75 today and has to submit his resignation. If Rome chooses to accept it speedily, will the diocese be able to continue to pursue this purchase-I’m not an expert in canon law so I don’t know if an expenditure of this kind can be made if the see is vacant. And there’s no guarantee that buying this building is something the next bishop would even want, but if the sale goes ahead he would be stuck with it.

If they haved all this money why not build a beautiful Catholic Church, you know a real one like those beauty in Europa. many will come to and will be converted due to the beauty of the Church.

what are these people thinking trying to buy more modernization from protestants? God my God, why have you forsaken us?

  1. The cost of buying the Crystal Cathedral, a building that will essentially satisfy all of their needs, will be almost half of their proposed budget for a new cathedral. It would be a huge cost savings to the diocese.
  2. I believe someone mentioned that blueprints had already been drawn up for a potential new cathedral before this offer came to the table. It was a substantially smaller building, and was also extremely modern. (Think the “lovely” architecture of the LA Cathedral. The Crystal Cathedral may actually be the MORE attractive option!)

I feel as if we were in an arena where people clap and rejoice while the Faith is being slaughted.

I saw that detail in later versions of the article. IMO, it actually provides a more pessimistic future for the Crystal Cathedral as a place of worship.

IIRC, Bishop Brown already has 2 associate bishops who would be able to continue the transaction.

The Diocese of Orange had already contracted the same architect who designed the Oakland cathedral. Plenty of pics here.

I havent waded through all or most of these 12 pages.
But being in Orange County under Bishop Brown, most of us conservatives dont like him.
He has kept or appointed alot of gay priests or even gay ex-priests to prominent positions.

If he gets his hands on the Crystal Cathedral, it will stay the Protestant Worship Barn that it is and unlike what we think of when we think ‘Cathedral’.

I’m in full support of the Diocese bid on the cathedral. I happen to enjoy modern architecture, and I think CC is an INCREDIBLY structure, both from an artistic and an engineering perspective. The inside is easily adaptable to Catholic needs, and it would be considerably more open and airy than many Catholic churches that currently exist.

I’m sorry, but there is nothing more inherently divine or appropriate for worship about 15th-century European architecture than there is (as a whole) about its 20th century American equivalent. If it was a matter of making our structure and worship as close as possible to what Christ might have experienced, you might have a valid argument…but the only reason the old churches were designed as they were was because those styles happened to be popular at the time of their creation.

I’m not saying people are obligated to like the design of the Chrystal Cathedral - but lets not blow the dislike beyond what it is: a personal style preference completely irrelevant to a location’s suitability for worship.

Brrr. Looks like something that was designed for the Raelians.

I’d prefer the Crystal Cathedral over this monstrosity.
