No, I am not too excited. On the good side, I do feel like I am pretty much done with trying to read the Pope Francis tea leaves though - the pattern is forming and the clarity breaking through. 😉
Whatever happens, don’t lose the faith. We all will be judged one by one. That includes the Pope and everyone else.

Thanks - :). No worries there. My faith is in good order. If it wasn’t, I doubt I’d bat an eye at any of this…😉

Well people.

Even though some may dislike this comment.

Not all Bishops are going to be a Burke or a Bruskewitz- and they needn’t be either.

Well layman be judged for disparaging the successors of the Apostles or even of the Vicar of Christ?

I think they will.

I have seen nothing to indicate that he disagrees in anyway with Cardinal Burke or the Cardinal he is replacing .

No Bishop is going to disagree with doctrinal matter with another. Styles are different.

Some wax philosophical on matters of faith and discipline but they are of one mind in their public ministry.

So where is the story here? I keep reading about how a “liberal” Bishop is replacing a “conservative” Cardinal. I am afraid the MM is going to be disappointed when they realize the new Archbishop of Chicago is indeed Catholic.

I guess it depends on the outlet. Different outlets are going to spin whether they be a huufpo a crisis magazine a ahem… voris.

It’s not just left leaning news with their spin. Read this thread for example

For me a bishop is a bishop. They have authority I don’t I don’t like to read any outlets casting negative light on our leaders

Well except when it comes to addressing the sex abuse crisi

Well, if you’re going THERE, then perhaps we shouldn’t pit one Pope against another, one bishop against another, etc. I see this frequently done or implied and other people simply react. (Traditionalist bishops, for example.) God simply didn’t give most the makeup to like everyone they come into contact with. And no one is condemning anyone here, as far as I can tell.

Apparently he discouraged clergy from praying outside abortion mills, or participating in 40 Days for Life.
Not to speak of banning a TLM Parish from any Latin Liturgies during the Triduum one year, and for a time banning Eucharistic Adoration across the Diocese. He is also in favor of ‘revising’ the Novus Ordo Mass, because he thinks Vat ll didn’t go far enough, although he cannot do that, Rome has to. Time will tell.

What’s this about banning Eucharistic Adoration across the diocese ?

I had read that the banning the TLM thing happened before Summorum Pontificum. Anyone know?

Well, it’s not entirely true that no one is condemning anyone. Read the vicious and baseless libels propagated against pro-lifers to justify His Excellency’s decision to restrict official pro-life activity in his diocese. As usual, “charity” is only ever for the powerful; everyone else gets the boot to the throat.

Time will tell. The only way to know if media reportings are genuine or exaggerated, is when he will actually take over in Chicago and we see the fruits. Until then it is all speculation. Even if he has a progressive bent or if in the past he had one, Bishops can change. I live in this Diocese but I won’t make any call one way or the other until I see what he actually does. This doesn’t mean that I will not call out irregularities in our Catholic faith, be it a Bishop, Cardinal or a Priest. It should be done charitably, but it should be done. In fact, I do believe we are REQUIRED to stand up for the true faith, no matter who it is with. But, we need to wait and see what he is actually like. Some people are jumping the gun before anything actually happens, especially in this Diocese, but people need to calm down and take a ‘wait and see’ attitude. We may all be very pleasantly surprised.

You would be too if you’ve seen the declining Mass attendance numbers. Just sayin…

That said, the tv news reported that he would like all the priests to learn Spanish. I can understand that.

It would be a shame if he does so in the future. Chicago has a generous supply of TLM’s and in fact they helped restore some of the parishes set to be closed. With the declining Mass attendance overall, I don’t see what banning the TLM will accomplish.

“I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.”

Card George 2010
I guess we will probably know the truth of this prediction in the our own lives, at least some of us.

I was distressed when I read of this appointment because of what the news was saying. Then I slapped my forehead for being taken in again by some media spin. How often have these sort of actions been spun in the direction of the paper or “journalist”, making an editorial out of a news story.

I think we should just cool our speculation and pray for the guy. Chances are we are hearing more of what some writer wants us to hear and the truth will be moderated, if not completely unfounded.
