I guess we will probably know the truth of this prediction in the our own lives, at least some of us.

I was distressed when I read of this appointment because of what the news was saying. Then I slapped my forehead for being taken in again by some media spin. How often have these sort of actions been spun in the direction of the paper or “journalist”, making an editorial out of a news story.

I think we should just cool our speculation and pray for the guy. Chances are we are hearing more of what some writer wants us to hear and the truth will be moderated, if not completely unfounded.
well put 👍

It would be a shame if he does so in the future. Chicago has a generous supply of TLM’s and in fact they helped restore some of the parishes set to be closed. With the declining Mass attendance overall, I don’t see what banning the TLM will accomplish.
He can’t ban it in the future. Summorum Pontificum protects the use of the Extraordinary Form. That was before Summorum Pontificum when special permission to perform the Easter Triduum in Latin was required. Today, it’s not required for priests who know how to perform the Easter Triduum correctly according to the Extraordinary Form.

It’s funny how some people automatically assume that a Bishop doesn’t like the Latin Mass. I was at a Latin Mass at our Cathedral, when it was announced that we would have Mass in the Extraordinary Form for all Holy Days at the Cathedral in the future. Then, after mass, some asked another person in the pew “I wonder why the Archbishop wasn’t here” the reply from the person in the pew was “because he doesn’t like the Latin Mass” Come on. This was the Assumption. Perhaps the Archbishop was performing Mass at the Seminary for the Seminarians… or perhaps he simply didn’t want to upstage the guest celebrant from Washington DC by sitting in choir. There was a huge precession for this celebration… it would have been strange to see the Archbishop sitting in choir with all the pageantry this mass had.

Sometimes bishops make mistakes, but I think most of the time they are making decisions based on facts, goals, & motivations which we don’t know about. Let’s have faith that our Bishops are here to do the job our Holy Father asks them to do.

Amen.

A few days after our 2nd son was born in 2004, Bishop Cupich was back in Omaha and we ran into him after Mass. Because his name is Blase, and our 2nd son’s name is Blaise, we thought it’d be cool to have a picture taken of him and our new baby. He was very pleasant and a good sport about it.

Now, that being said, all I can say about this new appointment is “Good luck, Chicago.”

Hey guys… I would be careful what you say because the slimy sedevacanists are following us. Look at this twitter thread. twitter.com/NovusOrdoWatch

As gracepoole mentioned there are real concerns about people harassing those outside of abortion clinics. As a woman I’m always uncomfortable when I pass such a protest and will cross to the other side of the road. Some protesters assume that every woman passing in the street is going to get an abortion. Yes, there are some protesters quietly praying outside but there are also some who verge on harassment. And this has nothing to do with religion. I’m assuming that these protesters are from all different faiths, but they decide to cross the line.

This really is about tactics. Cupich in his press conference mentioned that he thought people should speak out about all sorts of issues. He is obviously pro-life. This is all about tactics. Praying rosaries outside of clinics is one tactic, but there are also obvious concerns. Just because Cupich disagrees with the tactics doesn’t mean that he is against the cause.
Can you more be specific with the term “real concerns”?

What are they?

I pray that he will take a long weekend and read his predecessor’s writings.

I’m with the crowd that thinks that bishops and cardinals in 2014 ARE facing financial penalties or prison IF they follow church teachings.

ALL Catholics who wish to follow the church should also prepare for increasing legal penalty.

I agree. When I came back to the Church about 15 or so years ago, I honestly had a real struggle choosing Protestantism or Catholicism (or Orthodox). (I basically “left” the Catholic Church at about 5 or 6 if you can call it that – my father and I stopped going after my mother died.) My main problem with Catholicism being the scandals – accepting the authority of the Church as the representative of Christ in the world when this kind of thing was happening within the Church and was being covered up by so many on top of it. I am over-simplifying here a little bit – there were a number of other things – just what parish was comfortable, etc. I went to a variety of Churches for a year or two or even more. I couldn’t get over how secular the Protestants were. I honestly didn’t feel like the Protestant Churches were even churches. Whatever you believe is completely, completely ok. In my area anyway, the Protestant Churches really seemed nothing more than enlightened social clubs for doing good and meeting your neighbors. I had a very different kind of faith from that. When I went for the Catholics, I did it in a big way. I was so thankful that, in my view, the “real” Church was still in the world – it really was the living water of Christ. And of course, you have the history and tradition of the faith. You really do come home.

Back to the problem of secularism, however, it’s naïve to say that we don’t have a similar issue going on in the Catholic Church today. A lot of Catholics – in my opinion – are trying with the best intentions in the world to “modernize” and “mercify” the Church to meet the needs of the world today. I think they really believe this will draw people in. What they don’t understand is that by “secularizing” the Church, you will (1) weaken and/or lose the real adherents and (2) not authentically gain anybody – actually losing their souls as well. The people you have done this for don’t really have a need for a Church anyway. Secularism IS their religion. They will not adhere to the Church in faith; they answer to another master. And they will bring that to prevail in the Church. The same fate that you see befalling the Protestants will befall us. To me, this is cutting the throat of the Church. I feel compelled as a Christian and a Catholic to resist that – and I will.

John 17:14 (King James Version)
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Yes, to me those who advocate keeping up with the times and the world are on the wrong path.]

The Archbishop’s job will be to keep an eye on his priests. If he hears about an abortion rally that gets out of control (i.e. people screaming at ladies going in and out of the clinic.) then he’s got to say something. But to make a blanket statement forbidding priests…that’s just lazy!

P.S. Sometimes the anti abortion crowd really does get out of hand. In Albany a few years ago they had a group in front of Planned Parenthood yelling at women going in there to get Pap Smears. No abortions ever went on in that place!

I disagree. The archbishops job should be to keep an eye on those priests who do NOT stand up for the sanctity of life and the unborn. Some parishes pray for the unborn or an end to abortion, others don’t - strangely. I suppose some pastors don’t make it a priority. We don’t have a problem with priest standing up too much for the unborn. We have a problem with too many priests and parishes - the more liberal ones - not caring about the issue.

Also, how do you know that the Planned Parenthood “clinic” in Albany doesn’t perform abortions? Do you believe them when they say that? You take them to be honorable?

Actually they provide abortions but do not appear to provide PAP smears

Based on my 30 plus years in the ministry I seriously doubt sidewalk counselors were yelling at women.

Their Web lists abortion first among the services they provide.

You’re right. He has to keep an eye on priests who are apathetic about abortion. That’s what his (or his assistant bishops’) yearly visits are supposed to do.

If the Planned Parenthood Clinic in Albany NY was doing abortions, the word would get out and protests would carry on. Word would spread, "hey, you can get a cheap abortion at PP.
My friend told me the story. I trusted her. Who knows?

Yes, as I was informed by my gay neighbor last week, " yes, we lo-o-o-ove Fr. Mac at our parish, Our Lady of the Median Strip…he doesn’t push the issue…he just says “For those who are interested, there is some right-to-life literature in the vestibule”…I, myself, think its much more important to work on the social justice issues…blah…blah…blah…I heard your parish, St. Woebegotton’s, is pretty wound up in that pro-life stuff…don’t you guys ever get involved in social issues?"

I forget the rest of what was said, my head was spinning. 😊

😊:blushing: I BLEW IT!

Nowadays they have a big building, but back when she told me the story, they had a teensy little building on Lark Street, and people went there for birth control and “Womens Health Services,” which would include pap-smears. by the way, ladies, pap smears DO NOT CHECK FOR OVARIAN CANCER. Ask your Gyn.

Anyway, this woman stopped talking to me 7 years ago. Never told me why. She was a bigot, hated blacks, Catholics, etc. I should have known better than to ever trust a life-long bigot. DUMMMMMMMM 😊

Wow. Has this person ever read the Church’s social teachings? Life and dignity of the human person? Ring any bells? sigh

So…does anyone have any news or information on Bishop Cupich?

I suspect that progressives are going to be disappointed to find out that the Archbishop is indeed cCtholic.
If by progressives you mean those who wish to change the moral code and doctrines of the Church.
