GAH Foo Whiz.

From the ancient sumarian Gah, meaning I’m choking, Foo, as in the Foo fighters, and whiz, from the teenage boys need to do #1.

I always thought the name was just made up. Who knew Foo was true?💨
By the way, did I tell you that I got my Tiny but Mighty popcorn? Tasty, at least after the first batch which turned into a greasy, burned mess.

“Foo” came from the American and British fighters trying to pronounce the French word for “fire”. The orbs followed both Allied fighters and German fighters, and each group of pilots thought it was a secret weapon belonging to the other side.

Well, that’s what you get for not reading the user manual and for paying more attention to sports on the TV than the stuff cooking on the stove now. But yes, it definitely is worth the learning curve.

I decided for Lent that I needed a bit more frustration and bitterness to offer up. So I went back onto Catholic Match for awhile (my mostly-unused subscription expires in May) – it worked!

Same group of men in my search results that were there last year, and the year before… CM keeps trying to talk about how great their website is. Meanwhile, in their forums, members are quite blunt about how useless the site is. 😂 🤣 😂

The CM peasants are revolting!

(why yes, yes they are 👵🚬 )

I haven’t been on a date since my ex and I broke up over 30 years ago. At first, I was too busy raising our son and working. Having to be at work well before dawn made me avoid any sort of evening social life. Now, I’m set in my ways and taking care of my mom. Mostly, I can’t bear the thought of being rejected by someone I like again, or having to say no to someone who likes me, but the feeling isn’t mutual. So for now I’ll stick with Sergeant Mudgie’s Lonely hearts Club. Maybe one day I’ll be the Casanova of the senior center, the assisted living Don Juan.

But my son met his girlfriend online and they’ve been together going on three years, so I guess online dating can work out. His best childhood friend met his wife on E Harmony about 5 years ago.

If you ever get the time, I think that you should do stand-up–or maybe by that time–sit-down comedy at the Curmudgeon’s Senior Center, as you have such a great sense of humor…

I know that practically every one of your posts and comments always has me laughing!! 😁

@Daisy, I’m glad to hear you don’t like intelligent men. 😠
On second thoughts, I don’t care one way or another about it. Nope.

Scratch my previous comment and take that as my final response.

I joined CM back in 2003, when it was a young and promising web-site, then known as St Raphael’s (www.straphael.net), and was mostly inhabited by optimistic Catholic’s in search of a spouse, while eagerly chatting away about faith, dating, world news, etc, and checking each other out - with the angst that goes with that…😓. Behind all that, even then it matched your description of the owners congratulating themselves on what a great site it was, and the member’s finding their dreams being slowly ground into the dust. In my opinion they were mostly a slick commercial operation, and technically savvy, exploiting a good income stream. 😠 To top it off, they threw in Republican politics as the official “Catholic” position, knowing that the average Catholic couldn’t distinguish between what a “Catholic” site says, and what the Church teaches.

You all should know how it turned out for me, and a young’ish Canadian mom, if you’ve been paying attention to my posts here in the Mudgies. I left in 2005. Somewhat like @christofirst, I don’t want to be in the position of having my heart broken, or having to say “No” to someone who has put their hopes in me.

Yes, participation in CM is a fine Lenten penance. I admire you.

Enough with the flirting!

😠😠😠

I was at the library and saw this book, and thought it looked promising.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Unfortunately, I’ve never heard of the Memphis BBQ Mystery genre.

I trust my American friends will be able to help me out with that?

The first line of the book is most promising…
“Somebody”, said Cherry darkly, “Should kill that guy”

Did a quick search; found that Goodreads gives the series (there are 4 books in the series) a 4 out of 5 star rating.

A bit of background: Memphis is one of the big barbecue centers in the US, with its own style of cooking and sauces. The others are Texas (the entire state – the official state religion is BBQ), Kansas City, and MAYBE Chicago.

Thanks! Very interesting about the “BBQ” centres. Glad I asked for the inside story - I never would have guessed that Memphis BBQ is based on some common knowledge.

As far as I know, Australia is entirely homogeneous, culinarily speaking. There’s no such things a Sydney, Melbourne…etc. cuisine, apart from, obviously, coastal locations specialising in their own seafood.

Also, interesting that the series rates so highly. The cover certainly caught my eye. I think I’ll enjoy this one.

Please let us know how you like the series. The book you pictured is the second of the series.

The regionalism in BBQ comes from the different origins of each location. Texas is a blend of American, Spanish, Mexican, and Irish influences. (The word “doagy” – as in, “Get along, little doagy” – comes from the Gaelic. A lot of Irish moved to Mexico to work in the cattle ranches, and doagy means a calf or small cow.)

Kansas City, Chicago, and Memphis originate in their roles as transportation hubs. Kansas City was where the cattle from the West were shipped to the processing plants in Chicago, while Memphis served both river and railroad traffic up and down both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

I don’t want to be in the position of having my heart broken, or having to say “No” to someone who has put their hopes in me.
And that is why I am looking forward to a lonely old spinsterhood – because decent men are afraid.

Afraid of heartbreak. That’s a risk, I’ll admit it. But I’ve known enough love to believe it’s worth the heartbreak.

Afraid of having to say “no.” That will never be a problem for me, as no one shows me the slightest interest.

That’s just brilliant. Thanks for clarifying my cross for me.

And now my Lent is complete.
