Holy Family parish in Vancouver, BC, Canada is in the care of the FSSP and fully devoted to the EF mass. Low mass is celebrated on all weekdays and high mass on Sunday.
Your post made my eyes fill with tears. I so miss SS Peter & Paul . . . all the years of moving around, it is still the parish I consider “home” to my heart and soul. And, eventually, to my corporal remains as I have some unused property waiting at the parish cemetery! My parish, Sts. Peter and Paul in Naperville, Illinois, has a Latin Mass six days a week, most weeks. We are fortunate to have both a bishop and a pastor who are friendly to traditional Catholicism, although as far as I know, neither has ever said a TLM.
The SSPX remains out of communion with the Church. Pope Benedict said so definitely recently. Look it up on the Vatican website if you don’t believe me.And why would that be a risk to you? If you attend a Mass at one of their Chapels, do you think all of a sudden you would become infected? That seems a bit of a stretch. The Church herself says it is OK to attend their Masses, but advises against attending them too often or exclusively. That’s all. The Church has never prohibited anyone from attending them and the only people ever excommunicated were the Archbishop and the Bishops he consecrated. All their Priests are valid Priests and they all are able to confect a valid Eucharist at the Masses. The Church feels that by attending these Masses exclusively or on a regular basis a person may develop a mentality that lends itself to continuing the schism, but occasional attendance based on a love of the Traditional Mass is ok.
I can see your concern at attending a daily Mass but an occasional one should be no problem at all.
All right, please direct me to the document from thr Church that says we cannot attend an SSPX Mass. Go ahead point us to one. In fact the only document that they have ever come out with on the issue states that you may attend but they reccomend that you nor do so regularly and only do so out of a love for the Traditional Mass. The SSPX remains out of communion with the Church. Pope Benedict said so definitely recently. Look it up on the Vatican website if you don’t believe me.
SSPX masses may be valid but are still illicit. Palmas is expressing only a personal opinion and does not speak for the Church.
Illicitness is their problem and their sin. Our obligation is to find a valid Mass to attend. The commandment to keep Sunday holy trumps church politics and persistent gossip.SSPX masses may be valid but are still illicit.
Given that the pope has declared that the SSPX remain out of communion with the Church (see his statement in a letter published among other places on the Vatican website) the burden of proof would be on you, who are claiming it is OK to go to their masses, to produce evidence that it is in fact OK with the Church.Still waiting for someone to point me to the document that says we cannot attend SSPX Masses. I would have thought one would have been produced by now.
I think when you have experienced the two extremes: the epitome of liturgical abuse, and the epitome of reverence and heaven-on-earth at Mass, the choice for *guaranteed *tradition would be a no-brainer.May I say one other thing?
Shouldn’t we be on guard against making an idol of any particular liturgical rite?
Again and again in the Scriptures we see divine displeasure with people taking things into their own hands.
:tiphat: Well, I hope that particular property investment does not pay off for you for a while. When you do arrive, you’ll have my mother for company.Your post made my eyes fill with tears. It was good to see your post . . .

Did you read my second-to-last post?I think when you have experienced the two extremes: the epitome of liturgical abuse, and the epitome of reverence and heaven-on-earth at Mass, the choice for *guaranteed *tradition would be a no-brainer.
I invite you to discover why people will drive for hours to get to a Latin Mass. No, it’s not because other Masses are invalid, or do not have the Real Prescence, or any of that. These are the things that schismatics say. Many real catholics find that praying the Tridentine Mass is the closest they have ever felt to God. It’s a real spiritual aid. Not to mention the sheer age of it: the very Mass which you would see at a TLM is a near perfect replica of the Mass in the third century, and some say from the beginning.(ie when the old people told stories of back in the day when they walked with Our Lord.)
Please do not rebuke us for preferring this ancient form of worship.
OKGiven that the pope has declared that the SSPX remain out of communion with the Church (see his statement in a letter published among other places on the Vatican website) the burden of proof would be on you, who are claiming it is OK to go to their masses, to produce evidence that it is in fact OK with the Church.
It is never OK outside of some sort of extraordinary circumstance to knowingly and willfully attend illicitly performed masses.
And sheesh - relax a little. I, for one, though it should not matter for this conversation’s purposes, like the Tridentine mass and certainly have no problems with it. In fact I sometimes attend licit FSSP masses, and I look forward to a day of reconciliation with the schismatic traditionalist Catholics. There are things I don’t personally like about some of the changes made in recent decades, but again, in obedience, I respect them.
In the end, though, what makes us Catholic is obedience to Rome.
Don’t forget that the original Protestants who broke away from the Church thought they were being “faithful” to a tradition that they thought had been lost by a Church that had deviated. In the end they took things into their own hands - hence the problem.
The only way out of the - and I agree they are odious - “politics” - is obedience to legitimate authority. Clearly in reflecting on salvation history one can observe that God is pleased with obedience above all.
I know exactly where you mean. I’ll be across the entrance road, over by St. Francis.:tiphat: Well, I hope that particular property investment does not pay off for you for a while. I pm’d you, so as not to get off topic. (especially with the 16th century thing!)Did you read my second-to-last post?
The Tridentine mass is from the 16th century. It was revised many times since then, up until 1962.
Why don’t you go to a FSSP mass that is in union with Rome?
Maybe, I’ll bet I could use a 1570 Missal today. The Tridentine mass is from the 16th century. It was revised many times since then, up until 1962.
Well, in short the Tridentine Mass was around for a thousand years before it was codified and given the name “Tridentine.” According to Catholic answers of courseMaybe, I’ll bet I could use a 1570 Missal today.
Detroit was pretty fortunate in two of our auxillary bishops +Boyea and +Quinn. Both of them became active in the EF community and said the EF Mass whenever their schedules allowed. My parish,.
