I have not seen it, but as far as I know it’s in graphic detail.

minorcon.org/dakota_fanning1.html

There ought to be laws against the graphic portrayal of such things. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Hollywood should show some guts and go back to 1950s censorship standards.

Films I wish I could personally ban(astrix next to ones I’ve seen):
  1. Irreversible
  2. Dogville*
  3. American Psycho*
  4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre*
  5. Kill Bill*(I only saw part one, it stopped me from ever seeing films like it again)
  6. Pulp Fiction*
  7. Reservoir Dogs*
  8. A Clockwork Orange*
  9. Saw(and any other Gory horror film for that matter)
  10. Wolf Creek
I would strongly advise anyone before they sat down and watched:
  1. Requiem For a Dream*
  2. Any Film by director’s David Cronenberg and David Lynch(With the exception of “The Elephant Man” a fantastic film, and also possibly Cronenberg’s “The Fly” which is a fair morality tale)
  3. The Exorcist
  4. Rosemary’s Baby and Macbeth, both by Roman Polanski, these films are worth watching only by adults and only by well educated ones at that.
  5. The Shining
I would fight to the death for those films to remain in the public for people to choose. Other than Irreversible which is garbage, I am a fan of all those films.

With Fanning’s popularity, I expected this. What I don’t understand is why this is different from child porn in a legal sense.

The article above states that she perfomed the scene fully nude. Even if this did not make it on film, the makers of the film would go to prison in Texas for having her nude are anytime in the presence of adults.
I think that in many states this would be a crime, as would be filming, displaying, or showing scenes of simulated sex between a child and adult, even if the particular scene were not even included in the film.

This is a child we are talking about. Does the fact that a child works in the movie industry make them fair game for exploitation?

In the original article, the one the original poster provided it states quite clearly that it doens’t actually show the rape on screen.
If they do this scene tastefully, with out actually showing the rape but showing the after math of a rape, then this movie might bring to light a big problem. And don’t tell me this isn’t a problem because I heard of a case just the other day where a man had been raping a child for four years, sence the child had been one years old, and was given only sixty days in prison and community work. Now tell me that isn’t a problem.
If a movie shows the after math of a rape and how children are still tortured years after, if that puts common sense into some people, then I applaud the film makers.

How unacceptable the scene is depends on the point it’s trying to make, and on how much is shown. Sometimes, graphic images can open our eyes to the reality of a historical, or pressing social issue. Think about Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan.

Having said the above, however, I won’t go to see the film. I didn’t experience abuse as a child, thank goodness, but I really don’t think I could stomach seeing a child sexually harmed, even if it isn’t explicitly shown.

It was already bad enough when I saw some sicko’s child pornography collection, and had to go to court about it as a witness a few years ago. You can’t unsee some things.

From a legal and criminal standpoint, it depends on what the child is required to do during the filming, whether or not anything is ever shown.

If someone’s 12 year old child came home from school one day and told her parents that she was to be in a school play playing the part of a rape victim, I wonder how many parents might object?

I can’t imagine letting my child act out a child rape scene I don’t care how smart she is.

I have two friends that were molested/raped as children and the last thing they’d want to see is a child rape scene. I can’t believe any sane person would not know child rape is horrific and would some how need to be reminded of that fact.

I believe this is Hollywood sensationalism at the expense of a child.

Having been a child of rape myself, I 'd have to commend her for playing this part.
If this movie helps just one person to realize how horrible something like this could be, then it would be worth it.

I would say, before making judgements, please make sure to find out what the entire movie is about, what message it is protraying and if it is a true story or not before making judgements.

With all of the protections against child pornography these days, and her age, I seriously doubt that there is any reason to believe that she would be portrayed graphically in this scene.
Also, as long as Dakota is old enough (which she is) to know that this is a part she is playing and not something that is actually happening to her in real life, then I think that she could bring some creedence to the role since she is so well known.

Do not automatically assume that she is doing this role for money. She could be doing it because she wants to raise awareness or because the movie has something to offer to the victims of similar situations.

OK- I’m done- feel free to flame away…
She is an actress. It’s a movie. She appears to be very well balanced. Her mother is on the set with her all the time.

Jodie Foster got a lot of bad press about her acting. She turned out fine.

There will be no flaming from me, because I agree.

I’m sure the film makers are taking care not to violate any laws with this movie. And a school play isn’t really comparable to a Hollywood movie intended for an adult audience.

I would object in a heart beat!!

It doesn’t matter. Adult or no adult watching, it is still being portrayed on a stage. Especially because it is for kids to watch, I would never want my kid to be in such a play. Besides, I don’t know why this question was asked because I doubt any elementary or middle school would be doing that kind of play anyway.

WOW! Seems like a waste. They’re just movies.
You must not understand the dangers of censorship, Facism, etc. Its not the movies per se, its my right to choose, not some random person or board or GOVT body. Not a waste at all. What bugs me is that many people are weak and want things banned just to protect them from their own selves. The only thing I coukd support in that manner is online pornography and the removal of its temptation. Its severe and calls for that measure…but mainstream movies? NO WAY Use some will power if movies scandalize you.

Originally it was stated that there was going to be no graphic material in this fils, however if the claims in this article are true then I agree with the gentleman regarding an investigation.

The 1960’s said that it is OK to use women as sex objects.

Now we’re heading into the next phase: we’re being taught it is OK to use children as sex objects.

Relativism is evil.

I think that the serialization of young children has already begun to occur.

What I fear is that, although the producers might have very commendable reasons behind this scene, if the movie is a success(even if only critically) there will be a rash of such movies.

Rather then horrifying the masses such images, overtime, will become common place and loose the ability to disgust.
