Amen, Barb! One who immediately came to mind as I read this was Padre Pio. A special presentation last week revealed that he had mystical experiences in early childhood, but assumed naively that everyone else received these also. He asked his young friend whether he had seen the Madonna, with a very simple assumption that the answer would be yes, of course.Perhaps indeed there are thousands or more who are gifted by The Holy Spirit that we know nothing about who insight these mystical works - and probably the most astounded are they themselves.
Another holy recipient was Blessed Margaret of Castello, patroness of the unwanted. Blind, crippled, deformed, she lived in seclusion, obviously with no PHD’s, but we know that she passed from meditation to contemplation in which, despite her blindness, she could “see” the Savior.
I know a person who went to a priest for spiritual direction after having received some mystical gifts from God, and assumed he would know how to direct him based upon the priest’s own experiential knowledge, similar to Padre Pio believing everyone else was like himself. To his astonishment and embarrassment, the priest knew not how to direct him. He had no experience.
And there are many such living holy ones, as you said, Barb … simple, unlearned, loving hearts.
