I just found out my eleven year old daughters best friend at school belongs to a family that practices WiCCa. This gives me the creeps. I am really concerned that she may get involved in this type of thing at school even if I forbid her from going to her friends house. How would you suggest I have a talk with her about this?

I’d say, don’t jump to conclusions just yet.

I also had a friend who was Wiccan. Her coven did not cast spells on other people or seek to harm anyone. So, I guess you could call her a “good witch”.

The point is, she never asked me to participate in any of her rituals, and she was very respectful of my faith.

Ask questions first. Then you will know how to respond. If you reflexively react in a negative way you might push your daughter toward her friend rather than away.

Hysterics won’t help, but I see no indication that the OP is already “deep into the hysterical zone.” Talk about overstatement.

Back to the OP, forbidding her at this age could very well push her into rebellion on the issue. Hopefully she has a solid grounding her her Catholic faith. I might try to find a way to reiterate Catholic beliefs when it comes to topics of divination or seeking ways to control nature through magic, and why Catholics do not do such things, and why God is the focal point of our lives who has created the wonderful natural world around us. This may require re-educating yourself or a refresher on your part. I’d try to frame it in a positive way about this is why we believe and why without making it sound like you’re calling her friend or her friend’s family “evil” or anything along those lines. Maybe try to broach the issue without even bringing her friend up at all. You don’t just want to forbid your daughter, you want her to be comfortable and knowledgeable about what she believes.

What is meant by “wiccan” varies. I had a wiccan acquaintance in high school who thought he was a poltergeist who could make things happen or fall off walls when he was angry. Others might be more serious about nature worship, others might be basically agnostic/atheist and just like and respect nature. So I’d be careful about assuming what this family actually practices and just let your daughter know more about her own faith.

Two people in the Catholic charismatic renewal deliverance ministry in my country, who often are used by God in cases needing deliverance, or who refer people on to exorcisms, Have WARNED people to avoid needless contact with people and places where the occult is actively practiced, Why? Because demons affecting those places and people (where satan has been specifically worshipped), those demons can effect kids or christians who come into contact with those places/ people.

I would not allow a child to go to a house where the Occult is practiced, they could easily start playing the ouijii board for fun, or the Bloody Mary spirit calling game,
Be very careful also; catholic exorcists have warned that people in the occult actively curse those who have wronged them, if you forbid your daughter from talking to their daughter they could put a curse on her, (Exorcists have said the main cases of possession they deal with are of: people who were involved in the occult, or who were cursed by the occult).

Get her to wear a blessed Miraculous medal, to protect her from spiritual harm. Pray the Saint Michael prayer with her every day. Pray for that family every day that they will convert from their errors.

Read the two free online ebooks of Larry Cummins, an irish man (still alive), who was called by God into the catholic deliverance ministry, and who relies strongly on the teachings of Fr Robert De Grandis (who was also very active in the healing/ deliverance ministry)
www.larrycummins.ie

The prayers at the end of both of his free online books would be very helpful for you to pray each day for spiritual protection, and for the conversion of that family.

@joyful

As you can see, the range of responses you’ll receive will run the gamut. 🤣

The Occult is not a nutcase thing.

It is a SERIOUS spiritual danger.

The occult often involves specific worship of satan.

And those involved in it end up needing deliverance or exorcism from serious spiritual bondage.

The OP said that it “gives her the creeps” and is considering forbidding her daughter from having any contact with her friend. Sounds like hysterics to me.

Catholic parent feels nervous about witchcraft but expresses enough self-control to know that reactionary behavior will likely alienate her child and seeks counsel on calmly broaching the issue.

More breaking news at eleven.

OK. I can buy that.

Sounds like hysterics that you would prefer your daughter not to be friends with a family that practices satan worship?

What point?

So its fine to stop a daughter being friends with drug addicts or alcoholics,

But it’s outrageous to stop one’s daughter being friends with a family that worships satan in the occult?

You’re just digging yourself deeper.

All occult and new age religions, directly or indirectly worship evil spirits or satan,

It is a fact:
New age and occult religions worship satan directly or indirectly.

Which is the reason Exorcists warn people against involvement in the occult.

Wiccan is categorised as occult by the Vatican becuase of its use of curses and spells amongst other things.

Those who identify as “wiccan” in the western world generally don’t even believe in Satan. There is a sense in which Satan leads people astray, and I suppose you could say Satan’s involved in any and all division away from Christ’s one true Church, but the wiccans I’ve met don’t even have a conception of Satan that’s being worshipped. If you want to talk about misdirection being a serious issue that makes sense, but it’s not the same thing as believing Satan is an object of worship or ideals and holding black masses and such. The end result is that people are being led away from the Church through such means, so the end may be the same in some respects, but if we drop the surrounding context and actual beliefs we lose the ability to dialogue on these issues.
