Hold the phone. My issue isn’t with him being a dad, having rules or insisting a near-grown child show some responsibility.
My issue is with the whole tone he sets out that says to me more is going on than just a runaway daughter who has taken refuge in her boyfriend’s house. This man is talking about ending a marriage over this. (20 year marriage? Over this?)
We’re not hearing much about why the wife feels so strongly about preserving some financial support and not cutting the daughter off. But posters seem to feel free to condemn her for “undermining the father’s authority.”
Was her whole college promised to her? Were there conditions put on her receiving the assistance? Did she grow up with limits? Or has this all been sprung on her in the last half year that all of a sudden dad has reached his limit?
I take issue with the tone of the father who is glad his daughter is gone. Yes, actions have consequences, but there’s harsh and then there is the nuclear option. Go read his original post. Maybe he is just venting. But if that’s how he is venting after thinking about it and writing it on the internet, what did he say in the heat of anger to his daughter? Does he want a future with her at all? Does he talk about “Gee, how do I extend an olive branch to her? How can I persuade her to come back home so we can talk about this?” No. His attitude is he is sick of her and good riddance.
Before he can fix anything else, he has to fix THAT first.
He didn’t say like some other posters that they had discussed rules all along and when children violate them knowing beforehand the consequences they run the risk of being put out of the house.
He said that (in his view) things went along okay all those years until the last six months. Daughter got a new boyfriend and wham. She starts lying and sneaking out.
THAT should set up alarm bells. She was a good daughter until this kid came along? Is he feeding her drugs? Does he have a magic spell over her? Were there ever other boyfriends? Were they respectful guys? Why the big change with this guy? Maybe mom knows more about this than dad does. Maybe mom has reason to worry.
Surrendering your daughter… no… throwing her at some guy that comes along and changes her like that so quickly… “Here… Keep her. Now I don’t have to pay for her lifestyle” is not the action of a father who is looking out for her. The boy’s parents have no standards. That happens a lot. It’s maddening. And the boy’s parents won’t be there if she gets pregnant with the kind of love and support she needs from her own parents.
The time for this dad to fix his relationship with his daughter is now. Her immortal soul depends on it. His loving overtures to her will be a reflection maybe in her own mind someday of whether God Himself will extend the same loving fatherly forgiveness. Most people I know with God issues also have father issues. What example of faith and forgiveness is he setting for his own child?
Suggesting he start putting money aside in accounts his wife cannot get to in an apparently fractured marriage is also bad advice. You don’t run a family with fear and control. Something went wrong long ago. Not six months ago… longer than that.
Do we know the daughter thinks she has mom in her pocket? We know nothing of what the daughter thinks. For all we know, living at the guy’s house, she is beginning to see other sides of him. Familiarity does breed contempt. Maybe mom staying in contact gives her the hope she can come home again.
THAT is what the father should be working for. No one said actions don’t have consequences and she would have to earn trust back. But his tone was very harsh both toward the wife and the daughter.
HIS money? He feels like a fool?
Is it all about him? I’d be more anguished that if his daughter died tonight she might go to hell.
Has he gotten down on his knees and prayed for her to see the truth? Normal girls don’t just up and leave happy homes and move in with boyfriends and cut all ties. I think there is more to this story.
Yes, he and his wife need to be on the same page. But why aren’t they? I’d love to hear the mom’s side of this. Because quite frankly, in most average families, it’s the mom who has the issues with the teen daughter during these late teen years. And daddy is the hero. And teenage daughter doesn’t begin to appreciate mom till she’s in her early 20s or has kids.
More info from the OP so we can be more fair, please. If this is being unfair.
