Deacon Vestments In N.O.

The confusion issue is a poor excuse at best. Bluntly stated, some priests feels it distracts attention from then as celebrant.
What about the deacon who does everything in his power to look like a priest? His dalamatic looks like a chasuble. He makes a reader carry the Evangeliary so he can process-in and look more like a priest. Maybe our deacon is the only one that does such things and maybe it wouldn’t be so distracting if he was not so challenged, but he is and it is.

Why do people make such comments? One can buy a chasuble for far less than $200.00 that looks just fine. They may not be decorated or fancy, but they are well designed – they have good lines, they are made from good materials, they drape well and they can be laundered at home:

I would certainly prefer vesting in something like this rather than only an alb and stole. In fact for about $150/each, I think I would prefer this to an ostentatious dalamatic that cost a lot more. One that I had to drag to the dry cleaners where they still couldn’t remove the sweat stains…
That certainly is plain looking.

But that might be the answer for those who worry that the dalmatic worn by a deacon makes him look too much like the priest. The priest could continue to wear the “normal-looking” chasuble with the usual decorations while the deacon sticks to a solid color.

I have to admit, however, that the contrast between a deacon’s stole and a white alb actually looks more striking to my eye than a dalmatic.

One that looked perennially wrinkled despite my best attempts with a steamer. One that smelled because airing it out was not enough. Wow,

this is one instance where opinion REALLY comes into play.

I’m fairly sure a pastor can tell a deacon not to wear a dalmatic in his parish.
Um, no, he can’t. He can ask but he cannot tell. The deacon is free to wear the appropriate vestments of his office at Mass. Of course, a smart deacon will go along with what his pastor wants since he has to work with the man.

I can see you have been around a while too. Ain’t it fun?

In that case, I’m fairly sure the pastor has the authority to tell such a deacon to stand down altogether.

I’m fairly sure a pastor would also have the authority to tell a deacon (or a concelebrating priest) to change his vestments if they were inappropriate.

Our deacon would wear a Byzantine Catholic bishop’s crown if he thought he could get away with it…

If the stoles and dalamatics existed, I would wear them. I do question the wisdom of spending a lot of money on foofy dalmatics though if they had to be purchased.

It’s still an abuse, “period.” What sort of malady could impact a priest so they couldn’t wear at least a very thin white chasuble? Sounds fishy to me.
Our bishop has granted permission, and that is all that matters. He is our bishop. You, on the other hand, are not. Period.

Actually I think that dalmatic looks a lot like a chasuble. Most deacons don’t wear dalmatics that look like this:

I guess they wouldn’t look enough like a priest if they did to suit the tastes of some deacons. If they did, it would be CLEAR who was the priest and who was the deacon – particularly if the priest wore one of those bomb squad chest protector looking chasubles.

Um…isn’t quite obvious who the priest is?

HINT HINT…the feller saying the Eucharistic prayers…

You do realize that deacons can wear Roman Collars…RIGHT? This is a pic of a deacon

Not too all, no.

Particularly when there is a deacon who is putting on a show and trying to look like a priest.

Our deacon would probably try to read the EP too at times if he was not still sounding-out words.

Praise the Lord, we are told not to wear them in my Archdiocese. I am first in line to follow that rule.

Deacon Ed it is my understanding that the Ordinary is REQUIRED to allow deacons wear their collars. Perhaps Brandan can help us on this one. To the best of my knowledge Rome has spoken on the Matter and the Bishop cannot “forbid” collars.

I think we get the picture that you do not like your deacon. But since your profile lists you as Christian, would it be safe to say that you are not Catholic. This raises two questions in my mind. If you are not, why worry about this at all. If you are, why do you not boldly profess it.

What Rome has said is that it is allowed. Transitional Deacons do wear them. Permanent Deacons follow their bishop, who on matters such as this, are autonomous. If they say no, that ends it. If they say it is O.K., then we can. I personally wore one for 8 years in the seminary. I have “enjoyed” them enough.

I have to admit, I have almost NEVER seen a deacon wear the dalmatic, and I am 39 years old and have been around to many parishes during my lifetime.

I think the only time I have ever seen a deacon wearing one was at a Christmas mass a couple of years ago and you know who was wearing it? My father in law who was the deacon!!!
