I know can you imagine a man who basically said he’s not your man if you’re looking for someone who knows what it’s like to have to give up necessities due to financial hardship as so many Americans have had to do in these economic times, going up against a man who understands because his single mom needed to rely on food stamps for a time being, and then the first fellow also wants to make a $10,000 bet in a GOP debate? Just blew me away when I heard that. And here I thought Romney might be one of the candidates who could successfully challenge Obama. I may have to re-access if any of these GOP candidates can actually defeat Obama now.

Maybe people will learn(not necessarily you) to quit guaranteeing a particular candidate based on what they think this early in the game. I haven’t heard it, but initially it doesn’t sound like a campaign killer, but either way I’m not counting anyone out until they drop out.

Romney has not appeared to be the frontrunner in Iowa regardless. Does anyone think the expectations have been set so high for Newt now but that Congressman Paul or some other anti Romney besides Newt could actually win the caucus?

bbarrick, I did think Romney was one who could garner enough moderate support in a general vs Obama. That’s what I look at in a general election. Not who excites the conservative base in Iowa or SC. But you’re right. I’m all about not counting Obama out this early. So maybe someone like a Ron Paul will surprise in IA and Gingrich won’t meet the expectations bar that has been set for him. Expectations for Gingrich are extremely high now. He is supposed to run away with Iowa, SC, and FL onto the nomination according to the latest polling. And maybe he will.

The only way Paul could win is if people would stop talking about what they think they know about him and do their own research. As long as we keep asking for something different and voting for the same thing, we are going to keep getting the same thing. They regurgitate what the political pundits say about him and as soon as you look it up into context and listen to him explain it, it’s usually something different or not near as bad as they make it sound.
Newts got his personal baggage problems, but the problems of this country right now far outweigh that. I personally think most people are going to look beyond what’s happened in the past and vote for the person they think can fix the future. Unless Obama changes his tone, he’s not going to be the guy.

The voting public knows these guys are rich…including Obama. What they are looking for is someone to fix our ailing economy.

Considering all of the ridiculous nonsense that we have had to endure over the last 3 years at the hands of Obama, if the GOP is willing to concede the Presidency because of silly comment, then America deserves Obama and I will refuse to play this silly game of politics in the future.

It might not hurt his campaign at all. And sure people know these guys are rich. But in these times, like John Edwards paying hundreds of dollars for a haircut, they might not want to hear about it. Especially to hear it shoved into their face with an offer by one candidate to make a $10,000 bet with the TX governor about what is in the candidate’s own book. There are hard working Americans striving to make ends meet for their families months upon months with a total of $10,000.I agree. I don’t think it is a campaign killer. My guess, after looking it up, it will be long forgotten pretty soon. Newt’s still the center of attention and as I believe it was Sarah Palin said awhile back, as long as Romney stays quiet he will keep his little chunk of support, paraphrasing of course.

Amen to that. Come on people do you really think voters would change their minds about a candidate they were supporting because of an off the wall remark?
I think the $10K bet wasn’t to flaunt his very obvious personal wealth but to demonstrate that he was SO sure the statement was not in the book, he’d be willing to bet a substantial amount. If he’d bet a dollar well who cares? I would have preferred the Bill O’Reilly bet format of loser pays $XXX to the winner’s favorite charity. But I think the answer was not rehearsed and just spur of the moment. It will blow over with the next dopey remark by candidate x,y, or z.

While I don’t agree with Mr Paul on many key issues, inferring that he is engaging in anti-semitism does not seem to be a fair depiction of his policies.
I could be wrong about him entirely, but antisemitism is a strong charge to level at someone without overwhelming proof.
Following polices that would deliberately imperil Israel could well be depicted as antisemitic. While Mr Paul may indeed be imperiling Israel with his foreign policy, I cannot see any malice motivating him.

Oh no doubt it was not rehearsed. If it was, the Romney campaign was in worse shape even before the Gingrich rise than I thought. I’m sure it was one of those things that causes a campaign’s team of debate coaches behind the scenes to just look at each other and cringe when they hear it. Roll the videotape.
