This country has legalized the killing of innocent human beings and now has redefined marriage. We sing God Bless America at sporting events. A little hypocritical, no? Do you think God is blessing America?
Yes, yes I do. He blesses us daily with peace, tranquility, lots of food and shelter, newborn babies, the love of families, acts of bravery and kindness. At regular times throughout the year we give thanks for the many blessings given and we pray that God preserves us from harm and tragedy. The fact that He allowed Friday’s ruling to happen in no way means that he has withdrawn every blessing from us.

Individuals in every country are blessed as you describe to one degree or another. But as a country…no I don’t think God looks on us with favor.

I give up on the United States.

Why?

The nonsense political circus of the homosexual “marriage” polls, votes and SC decision.

I give up on the United States. I’ll not fly its flag again.
In a cursory glance through USA history I am sure you can find something that you’ll find morally objectionable going on within every decade (eradication of the indigenous and their rights, slavery, eugenics, state endorsed denial of rights, and more). I don’t think there will ever be a time where you’ll agree with everything in the state of the nation.

The difference is those were wrongs that were righted.

Now we are making wrongs to be right.

We ask God to bless America?..I’d prefer he would judge us instead and let the chips fall where they may.

God Bless this?

This whole “the sky is falling” attitude on life is tiresome.
I for one, still view living in the US as being more blessed than MANY places. Ask anyone who lives overseas. They all kiss the ground when they get to the US. Why else do you think people have been flocking her for decades?

Respect for those who died and fought for our freedoms is a very Catholic thing to do.
You can be angry with leadership all you want, but respect for the place that allows you to voice your discontent should be at least a given.

Those who do not vote and refuse to participate in politics are shirking their solemn duty as Christian citizens.
If voting changed anything it would be illegal. I did vote against SSM by voting for an amendment to my state constitution. The SCOTUS made that vote illegal. Tell me what was the point?

If almost no one voted the government would be really scared. That would signal people are no longer made complacent by the meaningless act of voting.

The U.S. is more blessed in material wealth. But that isn’t the greatest good. I imagine most people move hear for material wealth. I’m almost positive that is why my ancestors came.

Does that mean that you’ll start saying “God Judge the USA”?

If God were to judge the USA right now how would we know that’s what is going on? There have been those that have said that various events that have already occurred are because of judgement from God (the central USA tornadoes, the earth quakes in Haiti, the storm that flooded parts of New York, the 9/11 plane hijacking, global climate change).

👍

It kind of scares me when I read here on the forum or in the comboxes of various articles where people talk about just kicking back and watching the world burn. I saw one guy comment that he would focus on his salvation and that of his family and the rest of the world could go to hell in a hand basket for all he cared.

I get that people are angry and upset. So am I. But tossing up our hands and/or clamoring for God to start smiting people left and right is not the appropriate response. We are all of us sinners in need of God’s mercy. And, this side of death, there is hope for repentance and conversion for anyone. Imagine if in January 1973, God just unleashed a lightning bolt to strike down “Roe” from Roe v. Wade. I get the feeling some people would have cheered and smugly said “Serves her right!” And yet, she is now a pro-life Catholic. If she was struck dead on the spot, she would not have had that opportunity for conversion.

Let’s not underestimate God, here. And let’s not relish at the thought of others getting their comeuppance. We want them to be converted, not spend eternity in hell.

As long as we are willing to allow the judiciary to legislate we allow 12 people to decide the fate of a nation. We allow it, so we deserve it.

Mine came with the Franciscan friars to spread the faith.
It’s all in your perspective.
Being successful lay persons is not a sin, so long as we share our fortune with those less fortunate.

Does that mean that you’ll start saying “God Judge the USA”?
Sounds good to me.

I think if God wanted us to know we were being judged, he would make it so.

It’s easy to understand the reaction of people who believe we are clearly disintegrating as a culture. They may even be right–are we at the stage which Rome was at, when she had become corrupted to the point where no one could be blamed for shedding his patriotism?

It’s certainly possible, yes?

At the same time, one can respect the point of view that it’s never too late–godly people working faithfully may still move America back toward God.

I suspect that many of us who are more than half-a-century old, though, realize that it’s no sin to believe that the latter perspective is simply not to be, and the former is all but certain. The steady scorning of family has brought us to an altogether different level of immorality.

Of course people long to come here…this is where you can indulge in just about anything and everything, instant gratification is encouraged here, materialistic societies, greed runs rampant here, it is the ‘land of sex and honey’ so to speak.

I agree, its extremely hypocritical to be singing ‘God bless america’ when abortions and now gay marriages are happening all over the place. GEEZ.

Think about it, if there had been a society such as the US back when Jesus was here, how do you think he would have felt about it? It is true though that the US does help alot of other nation, but in NO way does this justify the actions that go on here, the path to hell is paved in good intentions.

Isn’t the time when things are worst the time we most need to ask for God’s blessing? It seems like a pretty poor time to stop asking God to bless us.

Saying “God bless America” isn’t a statement of how good and holy our country is. It’s a prayer of supplication. We could use all the blessing we can get.

Here I thought this thread would link to a news article about the comic book character being renamed. 😛 :o
Me, too! Only I thought his colors were being changed from red, white and blue to a rainbow!!

I can only tell you that it’s up to us to change it.
We are here in this place because Christians didn’t come out and vote and make themselves heard.
Want to be the majority? Then people need to keep praying and speak up.
God Bless America is a prayer, not an anthem. GEEZ.

Yes, we as Catholics are needed now more than ever to be the calm in the storm!

Just think how many people are going to be hurt by this ruling in the future and they all need to hear the Gospel. God give us strength to do your will.

:amen:

That’s pretty much how I felt the first few days after this as well. I do love my state, but I feel that my relationship with my country has been permanently altered in some fundamental ways. I’ve always had a critical eye on too much patriotism, but this has undoubtedly made me think much less of my country as a country.

In thinking on it, this is the way I probably would have felt in 1973, had I been able to appreciate the S.Ct outrage at that time. And in thinking on it, I would have been hard pressed to be too impressed with the country prior to 1865, given slavery. I guess a person needs to always mix love of a country with realism.

Although I’m not given to extreme declarations of distress, I do very much feel that the nature of the country changed last week. This Saturday we will celebrate our independence from the United Kingdom. But how much of a celebration should that be for anyone, now that we’ve endured a partial judicial coup and are less democratic than we were a couple of weeks ago. Long term, this either puts us into a new relationship with a Cesarian court, or if overturned, a more Athenian democracy. Neither is a good result.

These are pivotal moments in U.S. history to be sure (and the world because obviously this decision will have world-wide ramifications). However, it serves to remind us that this is not our permanent home and we are all called now, more than ever, to bring the joy of the gospel to others.
