Hi everyone. I just did a search on “defending the novus ordo mass” in Google and it came up with a number of anti-novus ordo websites. One, which I will not link to here, had a claim in the FAQ that the modern popes are not true popes. I found this to be disgusting and e-mailed them asking to immediately stop their heresy. Can you all come up with some good websites that defend the Novus Ordo Mass instead of attacking it?

Also, please defend the Novus Ordo Mass in this thread as well. 👍

You will not be able to reason with those who are convinced they are more Catholic than the Pope. They subscribe to sedevacantism-- the belief the See of Peter is vacant. Or, they are affiliated with schismatics such as SSPX.

In any event, you cannot defend the NO Mass or any other when they refuse to acknowledge the authority of the Pope in the matter. Remember, Satan said, “I will not serve.”

The defense of the NO Mass is simple: The Bishops have the authority to make changes to the liturgy and exercised that authority.

Hmm, thank you for this. It is sad that they cannot be convinced. 😦

Yep, that just about covers it. A Catholic can question whether the NO Missal accurately reflects the desires of the Fathers of the 2nd Vatican Council, but one cannot deny that Pope Paul VI had the authority to promulgate the NO Missal.

Then you’ve never visited my parish, or Assumption Grotto (also near where I live).
I am from Assumption Grotto and the NO mass does not seem high on the list there either. When the TLM was avail, the 9:30am latin NO mass was switched to TLM. Though Assumption Grotto does primarily use Latin, the other masses are english NO masses.

I am also in the chior there and trust me Father was ready and chomping at the bit to bring the TLM back ASAP.

I do not say that they are all beyond defense. But the majority of Masses I have attended in the “modern” times is unrecognizable from the Mass I grew up with. The priest has been turned around. Communion is (sometimes) given under one species. Women shed the head coverings. Tabernacles were (often) put off to the side or another area. Folk Masses and Jazz Masses were instituted. I could go on–but you get the point. It really is quite sad sometimes. Just today someone told me that their priest gave the homily sitting in a canoe at the altar last week (but I suppose it is not as bad as the infamous clown Mass).

Lord have mercy!

Communion rails removed, there are even churches that have started/have removed kneelers. My wife’s old church (not Assumption Grotto, when she was young), they don’t kneel at all.

Let me guess, Callifornia?

Where pray tell did the Church say that folks shouldn’t kneel as part of the “new” mass?

You may not like these changes, but that has no bearing on the authority of the bishops to make these changes or the legitimacy of the Mass.
Folk Masses and Jazz Masses were instituted.
Again, you may not like the music, but that does not negate the validity of the Mass nor the bishops’ authority over it.

And, this has nothing to do with the Novus Ordo Mass at all.

Yes. It came to a point, where I sometimes felt I was in a protestant setting.

The “authority” of these bishops to “modernize” the Liturgy is a thread all its own. As a convert to the Orthodox Church, I can enjoy the Divine Liturgy unchanged for about 1600 years. 😃

I would hope that you would recognize the most important things. Our Lord physically present in the eucharist. Scripture readings. The sermon. Praying to God. Then following Jesus by the way we live our lives. Im not sure where musical style and the direction the priest is facing fits into the priorities of following Jesus, but I suspect they’re pretty low on the list.

You see, Holly, when you post a discussion on defending the NO Mass, you immediately get people who post:

(A) Things they dislike about the mass or wish hadn’t changed in the Mass. Those who take it to the extreme, such as the websites you refer, reject the Pope’s *authority *to make changes (like them or not).

(B) A list of stories of liturgical abuses they have “seen” or "heard about. Abuses have nothing to do with the NO Mass at all.

But, it all comes down to the bishops have the authority to make changes to the mass-- and they’ve been doing it for 2000 years.

As a convert to the Orthodox Church you reject the Pope’s authority also. You’ve only demonstrated my point, not refuted it.
