The same could be done under standard self-defense, and there is no guarantee that such a case would ever make it to trial.

If I recall correctly, Zimmerman isn’t using a SYG defense…so it’s kind of irrelevant.
 
This picture has little bearing on the case. I am sure its release was just PR. None of use know who the aggressor was or if this was self-defense. Only two people know for sure, and one is dead. The juror will have to make the best decision they can and I do not envy them the task. I would hope that forensic evidence would give them at least clear guidance so they can have some sense of a probable scenario.

No, because in the situation mentioned, the need to retreat is brought back into the equation.

The problem with y’all’s thinking is that it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Most people who want to kill someone generally want to kill someone they know. Setting this up would probably be noticed–oh, says the prosecutor, you just happened to be hanging out in your enemy’s favorite bar? or whatever.

Peiple crazy enough to do this to a stranger are not usually going to do it in accordance with the law, because they would be criminals, and criminals generally have the idea that they are above the law and so tend to disregard it.

Will there be some failures with this law? Yes. But there are failures with every law. Altho we have reams of law against murder, murder still occurs.

So let me get this straight. All someone who wants to abuse the “stand your ground” law has to do to set this scene up is find someone who is physically bigger than one’s self, who is dressed like a thug and walking suspiciously through a neighborhood late at night. Allow one’s self to get punched in the face and head slammed repeatedly into concrete by this person until bloody. Then use gun to stop the staged physical attack. And all this in order to make it look like self-defense?

George Zimmerman Sues NBC Over Edited 911 Tape
George Zimmerman sued NBC on Thursday, claiming he was defamed when the network edited his 911 call to police after the shooting of Trayvon Martin to make it sound like he was racist.

But the portion of the tape that was deleted had the 911 dispatcher asking Zimmerman if the person who had raised his suspicion was “black, white or Hispanic,” to which Zimmerman responded, “He looks black.”

I will no doubt offend some people when I say this (though it is not my intention) but what so few are willing to come out and admit regarding this tragic case, is that George Zimmerman has already been tried and convicted in the minds of many people in America for the unwritten crime of believing that a young black male was up to no good. He broke no laws in following that young man, who from all evidence known at this time, could have easily made it home, and who then could have called police himself and reported the strange man following him, but instead though it appears that he chose to return to settle matters himself, much in the same way that a foolish young man in a car feels his sense of honor demands that he return to confront another young man who made an obscene gesture at him.

This is the root of the problem. It is tragic what is happening to young men of color. It is truly a culture of violence and death.

IMHO, we need to institute some sort of national service, like the Draft, only the service would not have to be military. It could be working in a VA hospital, working for a social service, etc. It should apply to people under 25, male and female. Our youth need to get out of their circles of comfort and see other ways of living. They need to learn discipline. It seems so many are bored and turn to crime to get what they want.

It would be like the draft. The privileged would get out of it and the other kids would get shafted.

But they’re not shafted. They are being taken out of their ghettos and learning discipline. The managers who work for us are often ex-military. Look at the difference between the baby-boom generation African-American and the generation X African American.

The privileged often serve in the military anyway as officers.

Martin had a cell phone–he didn’t even have to go home to call the police.

I’ve called 911 twice in the past year.

Neither time did I call for advice. Both times I called for a police/ambulance response. And since the people that answered the phone was a police officer or medical personnel, I wouldn’t have listened to them anyway. 🤷

No. You referred to those who get drafted as “shafted.” They are not being shafted. It is a privilege to serve your country.
