-likes the idea of women priests?
-gay OK?
-pro choice abortion?

Is this the right criteria for a liberal catholic?

Arrives a liberal amount of time before Mass. That would make me a liberal Catholic then

It’s different for everyone, and I bet since the term “liberal Catholic” has a negative connotation for many (most?), one would consider a liberal any Catholic who is more ”liberal” than himself. So:

More liberal than me = modernist
Just like me = what all Catholics should be
More conservative than me = rad trad

🤣

Then you have those radical liberals who insist on kneeling at Mass on Sundays… a medieval novelty contrary to the clear instructions of Nicaea ;).

I personally adhere to the admonition of St Lautus the Elder in this area…”and be not like the hypocrites who squander shampoo with daily washings, but rather be wise and prudent stewards of all personal hygiene products.”

Perfect. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Believes murder to be a confessable and thus forgiveable sin (found among monks rather than priests in most cases)
  • The term: “Universal Salvation” applies, can be found online

Indeed I DO also recall in Sunday school in my youth being told that murder was a mortal sin that was not forgiveable.

Doctrine and Teaching isn’t always equal in ones life.

But yes, that is what I believe now having spoken to an amazingly motivating monk who expressed that understanding.

Scripture says that the sin against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin, so…?

I don’t like your “more conservative than me = rad trad”

I think people more conservative than me are simply more pious.

You cannot truly be conservative and be in dissent, that really defies the definition of conservative.

What we really should be doing is naming the heresy, not using political labels - which are not precise.

“Liberal Catholics” are often subject to one or more of the following heresies:
  1. A form of Protestantism
  2. Modernism
  3. Relativism
  4. Americanism
“Rad Trads” are either:
  1. Schismatic
  2. Partly subject to a form of the Jansenism heresy.
The key is the similarity that BOTH of them share: they are both dissenters and reject the teaching of the magisterium.

@goodcatholic - FYI

God bless

One quibble: The term “Liberal” has been used in conjunction with theology well prior to it’s use in American politics. It has, in fact, been used by Popes to describe theological positions influenced by Enlightenment thinkers.

That’s fair… to me, “liberal catholic” is a synonym for “heretic” or border line heretic. However, it does not explain why they are heretics or flirting with heresy.

So I would rather have some clarity regarding what they are dissenting from.
