since the term “liberal Catholic” has a negative connotation for many (most?), one would consider a liberal any Catholic who is more ”liberal” than himself.
I think you’ve nailed it. It’s become a form of harassment almost. Catholics proudly distancing themselves from liberal lepers.
And anyone who dares to question Catholic Church authority perhaps?

Liberal Catholics” are often subject to one or more of the following heresies:
  1. A form of Protestantism
  2. Modernism
  3. Relativism
  4. Americanism
I think Im considered a liberal catholic on here then. I like the Protestant emphasis on conscience and personal relationship with God. You can call me a Cathprot. if you want.

I think others might disagree with you on here.
  1. No orthodox Catholic would ever deny that we are supposed to have a personal relationship with Christ.
  2. Conscience is very important to Catholics as well. However, we focus on trying to make sure that everyone has a well formed conscience. There are many things in this world that the Catholic Church leaves to prudential judgement, which requires us to us our consciences.
However, if you mean conscience gets to replace confession and/or following the teachings of the Church, then that would be a position not supported by the Church.

God Bless.

When I think of “liberal Catholic” I think of politics. A Catholic who votes for liberal politicians.

Liberalism is the dogmatic affirmation of the absolute independence of the individual and of the social reason. Catholicity is the dogma of the absolute subjection of the individual and of the social order to the revealed law of God. One doctrine is the exact antithesis of the other.

From chapter 6 of “Liberalism is a Sin” by Dr. Don Felix Sarda Y Salvany

I have seen the word liberal used to describe Jesus and the Blessed Mother, but it was in a different sense than how it it used today.

Maybe conservative = Anti Vatican II? (Pro pre-Vatican II, I guess you can say). Probably also are not fond of ecumenism.

Politically speaking, I guess the more famous Catholic figures tend to be liberal. Kennedy, Biden, I hear Pence is a former (but obviously leans right).

-likes the idea of women priests?
-gay OK?
-pro choice abortion?

Is this the right criteria for a liberal catholic?
#1 We know homosexuality and killing babies are mortal sins. #2 But so its not helping the poor and those in need a mortal sin.

So conservatives only focus on #1, and hate #2.

Liberals focus on #2, and hate #1.

So which of these groups is in risk of the fires of hell?

Good thing the Church isn’t officially politicized like that. I think most Catholics or religious conservatives might have a leaning to helping the poor. What do you think?

You do realize that God can forgive any sin, even murder? Even the most sadistic serial killers aren’t beyond God’s mercy.

my experience with blue state liberal catholics is that they are more than willing to spend tax money on social justice and entitlements

and are more than willing to compromise pro-life concerns in order that they may keep favor with the Democratic Party machine; which is stridently pro-abortion

liberal catholics keep company with wolves & the culture of death

It is wrong to interpret Catholic social doctrines through the lens of current American partisan politics.

From what I’ve seen, many conservatives hate the poor and homeless, and want to remove every government program that can help them.

I don’t understand how they claim to love Jesus, but not have compassion on the poor like Jesus did. I saw this at alot of Evangelical Churches that were super conservative.

There is this mega Evangelical Church near where I used to live a few years back. In their parking lots on Sundays were, Mercedes, BMW’s, Maserati’s, etc…, yet behind their church on the railroad tracks was a homeless camp of over 100 tents. They only invited them for a Thanksgiving dinner, once a year. What kind of Jesus is in their church? Its sure not the one I know of the Bible. So sad…

wouldn’t that spoil the party for many now! 🙂
To think Jesus was a liberal in his day! 🙂
But the new covenant might have seemed very liberal to the rule obsessed Jews.
'but basically guys I just want you to love God and love your neighbour"
The Jews would be horrified.
(end of small knowledge on Scripture)

Francis is not a latino. He’s an ethnic Italian, raised in an Italian neighborhood by parents who were born, raised, married in Italy, who had aunts and uncles who had children born in Italy and brought them to Argentina in an era when many Italians and Southern Europeans were coming to Argentina

Pope Benedict XVI made it clear to everyone to stop using labels to describe Catholics.
There are only two types of Catholics - those in a state of grace and those in a state of mortal sin.
